Chapter 10

After Qian, Michelle, and Michael arrived back to their house, Qian noticed that Michelle was awfully quiet throughout their way back from Mikey D.

“Mich, is everything OK?”

Michelle was afraid to look at Qian, unsure of how Qian would response. But she knew she had to tell Qian what she had done. “Qian..I…I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad at me when you hear this.”

“Mich, what is it? Tell me.” Qian asked.

“I told Ron …I told Ron that you were in love with him.” Michelle murmur.

Qian was hoping she heard Michelle wrong, “You told him….told him what??” Qian asked although not expecting a confirmation reply because she had heard what Michelle said clearly. “I can’t believe you did that, Michelle! How could you have told him that? Don’t you know he’s getting married?? What difference does it make that he knows it now??” Qian raised her voice.

“Qian, please please don’t be mad at. I didn’t know….I didn’t know he was getting married to Myolie. I was just so caught up in the excitement of trying to get you two together….so I told him your feelings.”

Qian went to sit in the living room by herself. Michelle knew that Qian was very upset with her and Qian had every right to be.

“I’m sorry, Qian.” Michelle pleaded as she went to sit down next to Qian.

But at the moment, Qian was too upset with Michelle so she stood up and went to her room.

She has been staring directly at the computer screen for the last 2 hours. Her mind had been completely blank the entire week. And to add to the frustration of having writer’s block, Qian and Michelle had not been talking or seeing much of each other lately. Qian was beginning to feel guilty for treating her friend this way – whatever Michelle had done it was done in the best of her interest, even though Qian really wished Michelle had never told Ron about her feelings. Qian gave a sigh and decided to give up writing for the day. It’s time for her to go talk to Michelle again.

“Mich?” Qian called out as she walked into the kitchen. But Michelle and Michael were no where to be found. On the countertop of the kitchen table, Michelle left a note saying she will be home late and not to wait for her.

{Ring Ring}

“Hello?”

”Qian?” Ron asked.

There was a silence. Ron knew it was Qian on the other line. He had been trying to call her the last few days and even left her a voicemail on her cell phone but she had not replied to him. So, he finally got her home phone and address from Ray’s office and decided to find her.

“Qian, I know you’re there. Listen, I need to talk to you.”

“Ron, there’s nothing to talk about.” Qian replied.

There was another silence this time, except it was Ron who was silent. He had been troubled ever since Michelle had told him about Qian’s feelings for him. He was still confused himself as to what he was feeling. Of course, he still loves Myolie – how could someone not love another person after you’ve been with them for over 6 years? But this new discovery of Qian’s feelings for him, made him rethink and wonder if he too did love Qian all this time but without realization. If Qian had gone along with him on that trip would things have been different between them? The thought of Qian being secretly in love with him all this time made Ron feel guilty, because he should have realized and returned that love to her along time ago. He wasn’t sure what he wished to accomplish by going to find her, but he knew he had to see her.

“Ron, whatever Michelle told you that’s no longer true. So please just ignore it or forget about it. OK?” Qian stated.

“I can’t, Qian.” Ron finally replied.

Qian heard the door bell ring, “Ron. I have to go, there’s someone at the door. Bye.” Qian hanged up the phone and went to answer the door.

Qian couldn’t believe who was standing in front of her when she opened the door. “Ron? What are YOU doing here? You shouldn’t be here!”

“I had to come see you. Face to face, Qian.”

“Go away!!” Qian yelled and tried to close the door.

But Ron stopped her and grabbed her hands, “Qian, please don’t push me away.”

“No!! Don’t!! Why are you doing this?? How do you explain this to Myolie?” Qian asked angrily as she yanked her hands away from his hold.

“I…I don’t know, Qian. I think…. I needed to see you…to hear it from you directly.”

She was no longer upset that he had shown up unexpectedly at her door anymore as she looked into his eyes and saw only confusion in them. “Ron, go home. You shouldn’t be here. Michelle should have never told you the thing she said.”

“But it’s true?” Ron asked.

Qian turned to walk away from Ron. She didn’t think she could talk to him if he continued to look at her like that. “It was true. Yes, I was in love with you, Ron. But that is no longer true” Qian lied.

Then she turned back and faced him, “Ron, if this had been 6 years ago and you came looking for me. I would have been very happy, but it’s not the same anymore. Ron, I think you’re just confused and this sudden, unexpected news is making you unreasonable and too emotional. The person you really love is Myolie, not me.”

And when Ron didn’t reply, Qian walked to the door and opened it for him. “Don’t do this to yourself, Ron. And don’t let Myolie know this, it’d only hurt her.”

Perhaps Qian was right, Ron thought. What had he been thinking coming all this way hoping to accomplish? He’d be married to Myolie in less than 2 weeks. He cannot betray or be disloyal to Myolie. And he cannot selfishly ask Qian to start loving him again. It was too late.

“I’m sorry, Qian. I don’t know what got over me. You’re right.” Ron said as he walked back out the door. But before he left, Ron asked “You will still come to our wedding, Qian? I don’t want Myolie to be upset if you’re not there.”

Qian smiled and nodded. “Yes, I’ll still be there. Good bye Ron.”

“Bye, Qian.”
