Chapter 12

Unlike the cold showers he normally took every morning, this morning Ray had opted for a hot steamy shower instead. He turned the hot faucet to maximum and let the steam filtered throughout the entire bathroom before getting inside the shower. Once he stepped inside, he let the hot steamy water run through his hair as he kept his eyes closed. He still remembered everything vividly that had happened last night after Qian had asked him to stay with her. As the hot, burning water continued to run down his body, it further increased his anger, humiliation and bitterness. For a man like him, it was not uncommon for him to sleep with other women due to temptation as he has done many times in the past. And last night, his one-night-stand with Qian would have been no different than before if it weren't for two newly facts which Ray had discovered about Qian. The first of the two discoveries, Ray did not dare to recall for it caused him a guilty discomfort. The second were those words, which Qian had whispered before falling asleep. For the first time in his life, Ray felt a bitter disappointment for being used as a replacement lover. And to make the matter worst --- a replacement lover for his best friend! If Ray had known what he now knew about Qian, he would have never touched her.

Qian was awoken by the sound of the bathroom shower. As she slowly opened her eyes, she felt a major migraine and soreness pain throughout her entire body. Suddenly, she discovered that she was in an unrecognizable bed. Qian sat up immediately and found that she was completely naked under the white sheets. Qian's face revealed distress and fear as she immediately remembered that she had slept with a stranger last night. Qian burrowed her head down back on the pillow and gave a soft cry, but that only added more pain to her migraine. How could she have been so foolish and out of control, Qian asked herself. Thinking that it must be him in the shower right now, Qian could not imagine the humility and shame if she had to face him. She looked around the bed and floor for her clothes, hoping she could possibly make a quick escape before he was done, but they were nowhere to be found. Then Qian heard the shower being turned off, and several minutes later, the bathroom door was opened.

Ray walked out casually back into the room with nothing but a white towel wrapped around his waist. Not wanting to witness her one-night-stand-stranger, Qian turned to face the other way and pretended to be asleep. But Ray knew she was already awake.

"I know you're awake, Qian." Ray said.

Without the effects of liquor, Qian immediately recognized the stranger's voice. She immediately sat up while tugging tightly onto the white sheets to cover her body.

"You!! What are you doing here?" Qian stated with both a questioning and unbelieving tone of voice. But she quickly looked the other way when she saw that he was only half-covered from bottom down. Her face began to turn pink then to red as her anger and embarrassment began to intensify. Qian already knew the answer to her question. It was Ray who she slept with last night.

"I think it's pretty obvious why I'm here. Sorry to disappoint you. Who did you think I was?" Ray asked with bitterness in his voice.

Still looking away from Ray, Qian retorted, "You took advantage of me. I was drunk."

Ray gave a mockingly laugh, "Maybe you forgot from all the liquor you had last night, but it was you who asked me to stay. Or did you not remember that part too?"

Qian finally turned back and shot Ray an angry accusation, then exclaimed, "You!! You should have known better that!!! I was too drunk to know what I was saying!! I............I knew you were a pervert the first time I saw you!!" Qian grabbed the nearest object on the bed and flung two large pillows at Ray.

Ray raised both his hands and stopped the pillows from hitting him. Then he stepped up closer to the bed and crawled onto the bed next to Qian. He spoke in a low, yet dangerous tone, "That is the last time you're calling me a pervert, Qian!" Ray eyes were gleaming with murderous threats, which made Qian afraid of what he was gonna do next. But to her sudden surprise, he rolled off the bed and picked up the room's phone instead. He was about to make a call, when someone knocked on the door. Ray went to open the door and found that it was the service lady he was meaning to call.

"I'm here to deliver your newly washed clothes." Said the service lady.

"Thank You. Keep your change."

After the service lady left, Ray brought back a stack of clothes and threw them on the bed.

"Here's your clean clothes. Get dress....or did you want me to dress you up again?"

Qian sent him one of her loathsome stare as she said, "I hate you."

Ray gave a loud, pretentious laugh and replied "Believe me, you're not the only one who regrets what happened last night. Don't worry about me ever laying my hands on you ever again, even if you beg me!" Without caring if Qian was still looking at him or not, Ray started to change back into his clothes.

Of course Qian quickly looked away when she knew that he was about to change in front of her. She had never hated any body this much before or has anyone have made her feel so insignificant and cheap as Ray just did a moment ago. She knew that it had been her who had asked him to stay, but never in her imagination that person was Ray. A single drop of tear began to fill her eyes and soon she could not longer control her tears. Qian wished she could erase what happened last night between them.

Ray had purposely said and done those awful things to Qian because he wanted to hurt her and humiliate her for the same way she hurt and humiliated him. But he knew he went a bit too far when he was her shoulders beginning to quiver -- he knew she was crying silently.

He softened up his tone of voice as he offered his apology, "Qian, I'm sorry. I was over the line...I"
"Just go away....I don't want to see you again. I don't want to hear anymore of your cruel words..." Qian continued to cry.

Ray was debating if he should tell her why he was angry at her, but decided that it probably didn't matter anyways if he explained to her. It's best if she hated him, at least that way he would feel less guilty for his mistake. Explanation is only required when understanding is also needed, but since this is not the case -- Ray left the room without saying anything else to Qian.

When Qian arrived back to her apartment, she saw several luggage and suitcases in the living room.

"Mich? What is going on?" Qian asked as she went into Mich's room.

"Hi Qian, how was the wedding?" Mich looked up from her packing and smiled.

But Qian ignored her question, besides the wedding was the last thing she wanted to think about now. Pointing to the suitcases outside in the living room, Qian asked again, "Mich, where are you going?"

Michelle stopped packing and directed for Qian to sit down on the bed.

"Qian, I've just gotten a new job. But it's on the other side of town. My boss has offered me a place to stay. I think I'm gonna take on that offer. Besides, it'll be more convenient for me to work and watch Michael at the same time and I won't have to commute back-and-forth to work and home."

Qian's face was sadden upon hearing her friend moving away, "Mich, are you still mad at me because of what happened in previous week? I'm sorry I didn't mean to stay mad at you."

Michelle patted Qian's hands, "No silly. You had every right to be mad at me, but that is not the reason I'm moving. And besides, it's about time I stop depending on you and let you have your life too. I know I've been such a burden for you, Qian."

"No you're not. What about Michael? Who's gonna baby-sit him while you're at work?"

"My boss is a very nice man, he allows me to bring Michael with me while I'm working. But I might still need you to baby-sit him at certain time, if you don't mind."

Qian gave an understanding smile and shook her head, "Just bring him over anytime."

"Good, well we better get going. I have to start working on Monday....Hey, you will visit me and Michael when you have time right?"
Qian nodded.

{Paris, France}

Myolie was standing out the Parisian Hotel balcony gazing at the beautiful sunset in the sky. Then she looked back the room where Ron was still sleeping peacefully. She smiled then turned back and focused her attention to outside scenery. Flocks of doves danced happily around the water fountain below her balcony. Myolie knew that she was one of the luckiest and happiest person in the world right now. She was finally married to the man she has been so in love with for over 6 years now. Ever since the first day when Qian introduced her to Ron, she knew she had found her other half. Up until the wedding day, Myolie had been very nervous, especially when she saw a sudden change in Ron's behavior. She hoped what she had feared all these years did not come true; that was why at the wedding day she had to reassure Ron of his love and promise for her. Now that they were finally husband and wife, Myolie felt somewhat relieved. Love does a make a person do foolish and selfish things. Myolie knew she had been selfish all along for keeping Ron's love to herself. But she didn't think she could ever imagine her life without him.

"What are you doing waking up so early, Myolie?" Ron asked as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

Myolie laughed and gave him one of her sunny cheery smile, "I don't want to leave Paris yet. I'm gonna miss when our honey moon will be over."

"We can always come back to Paris anytime you want." Ron replied as he snuggled his head on her shoulders.

"You promise?"

"Yes."

Time goes by quickly if you keep yourself busy at work as Qian soon found out. Ever since coming back from the night of the wedding, Qian had forced herself to forget what happened and promised to focus only on finishing up on her novel. She still has not started on the chapter, the one that would talk about "Love after being a Single Mom" as Jessica had requested. She had decided to leave that chapter for the end as a last thing to do because currently her mind was not ready to deal with this emotion. Tomorrow, Qian needed to stop by Jessica’s office for another visit and give her the newly revised version of the book. She hoped she will be lucky again and not have to see Ray. She has been lucky not to bump into him the past several time she has been to Metromedia over the period of the last two months.

After saving the document and letting the printer print the rest of pages, Qian stood up from where she had been sitting. But as she stood up, she felt dizzy like the room was spinning around her. It was not the first time this had happened to her, lately after sitting in front of the computer for a long time, Qian would experience dizziness whenever she stood up. Qian slowly lowered herself down and stay rested for a moment before going to the restroom to wash her face. She was surprised when she discovered that there was a small amount of blood leaking thru her white night gown. Qian thought and breathe out a sigh of relief, she must be having her period because she had missed it last month.
