Chapter 22

Richard Bach once said:

"If you love someone set them free
If they come back, they're yours.
If they don't, they never were."

The weather in Paris was definitely much cooler than HK, Myolie thought, as she stood outside the Hotel balcony wearing only a thin cashmere sweater and a pair of white jeans. She wondered what Ron was doing at this moment, was he looking for her? If he 'knew' her, he would have found her by now. Yet it has been almost a week since she left, and still no sign of him. It took her tremendous effort to leave Ron, but she knew she must set him free so that he could make his own decision. She also knew she was selfish for stealing a precious 'gift' from him -- their unborn baby that she was carrying inside. Myolie was not as strong as Qian, she could not have completely give-up Ron entirely and that was why she needed this baby first before she could let him go. As she stood there in the mist of the cool pre-autumn air in Paris, she still had hope that Ron would be coming back to her.

------

A man and a woman closed the door behind them as they walked in the cold-white empty hallway.

"How could god be so cruel to Qian? After all that she has gone thru? Why?" Michelle cried.

"We should be thankful that she survived the accident, Michelle." The man replied.

"I know, but the baby...Qian would be so upset when she wakes up and find out about it..."

"We all are. But right now, I'm most upset that I can't get a hold of Ray inthe last few days."

"Couldn't you call his work place, Ron? He needs to be here. She needs him most now." Michelle asked with pleading eyes.

"I know. I've called his work place and they said he has taken a business trip to Japan. And I've called his cell phone but it seems that he has turned it off. I'm just so pissed off and frustrated about this whole entire situation!"

"I'm sorry, I called you that night. I knew you told me you were at the airport. But as soon as I received that emergency phone call from police department, the first person who came to my mind was you."

"No, you did the right thing by calling me, Michelle. My flight can wait, at least until Qian is fully recovered."

"I'm...I'm just afraid she won't ever be fully recover, Ron."

"I know...me too."

Ron and Michelle's conversation was interrupted by a female nurse, "Excuse me. But patient in Room 104 is awake now."

"Thank You, nurse." They both said.

When Michelle and Ron re-entered the room, Qian was still lying on the bed, but she wasn't looking at them; she was only looking into empty space.

"Qian?" Michelle called her name softly.

But there was no reply. Qian didn't even blink or move her eyes toward Ron or Michelle.

Michelle and Ron looked at one another before approaching to the bed.

"Qian? Please don't scare me. Please say something." Michelle pleaded again.

Then Qian blinked once and looked up at Michelle and Ron.

"I'm here, Mich." Qian finally replied.

"You really scared me, Qian. I thought...I thought you had forgotten us." Michelle cried as she held onto Qian's hands.

Again Qian looked from Ron to Michelle and smile weakly. "How can I forget my two best friends?"

"I'm sorry, Qian." Ron said.

Qian didn’t reply but only looked down at her now empty and flatten stomach, and then she rested her hand on it and looked away from Michelle and Ron. Tears started to flow from her eyes. The doctor had already told her about the lost of her baby when she first woke up from her accident. She was so shock at the news that she fainted and had remained 'asleep' since then. But Qian wasn't really 'asleep' , she just became lifeless during the course of the last few days. Qian felt numb as though there was no emotion left inside of her. She did hear Ron and Michelle's callings of course, but she did not feel the need to answer them, although she knew sooner or later she would have to 'wake-up' and face the reality again. Qian was waiting for something else...someone else to come and comfort her, but he never came. And that made her become even more hopeless and stale inside. On the 5th day of her 'asleep' state, Qian realized she could not longer disappoint her friends, she must release them from their worries and distress and that was why she had finally 'woke-up' again. But still, she knew she’d never be fully recovered from the lost of her unborn baby and probably the lost of someone whom she dearly did love-too-late.

"I'm the one who's sorry for causing you all to be so worried about me these last few days." Qian said. Then she looked up to see Ron's worry face, and she tried to smile at him. She wanted to let him know that she was OK now and it was alright for him to leave.

"Shouldn't you be in Paris by now, Ron?" Qian hinted.

"Not until I see you alive again, Qian." Ron replied then he picked up her other hand and patted it.

"I'm alive now." Qian said softly, and then she looked from Michelle to Ron. She wanted to reassure to her friends that she will be alright. Qian did not want to bring anymore stress to them since they have already done so much for her already.

"Mich, go home. Michael needs you there too. And Ron, go to Paris and look for Myolie. I will be well again. I promise." Qian made another effort to smile back at her caring friends. "Please don't make me say too much, as you know how weak I am. And don't make me worry about you two, too. I just want to have sometime alone. Can you both help me do that?"

Ron and Michelle objected to her suggestions at first, of course. But they both knew Qian wanted to be alone. They also knew that it was Ray who Qian wanted to see, not them. And so they left her in peace -- each going their separate ways. Michelle went back to her family and Ron finally left for Paris.

As for Qian -- there wasn't a single night since the lost of her baby that she didn't cry to herself secretly in the dark and starry room from her lonely apartment.

Where was Ray and why wasn’t he with her now when she needed him most? Did he really mean it when he said he would not be bothering her anymore? The night of the accident kept replaying in Qian’s mind, constantly reminding her of her stubborn foolish mistakes. Ray would never come back to her now that she had also lost their baby. There would be no reason for him anymore, Qian thought.

-------

Myolie woke up the next morning and found a sudden surprise note left on the front door of her room. She opened it, but it was an empty card. Curiously, she opened the door and poke her head into the hallway. But it was also empty. As she was about to close the door and go back inside, a familiar voice called her name. She turned to see Ron standing in front of her.

"Why did you leave me, Myolie?" Ron asked.

Myolie saw that Ron was awfully pale and sickly looking. He looked at if he hasn’t shaved or had a night-well-spent in days for a long time.

"You know why." Myolie replied then she walked back into her room.

Ron followed her back inside and closed the door behind her.

"Because of Qian?"

"Call me selfish, but I don't think I want to share my husband's heart with another person, even if that person is Qian." Myolie simply stated. "I should think that you and her should be happy now that I'm not in the way anymore." Then she left the room and went outside into the cool air. She wanted to breathe off her nervousness for having spoken those words to Ron.

Ron followed her again to the outside balcony. "Qian and I are not together, Myolie."

Myolie looked the other way and pretended what he said did not matter to her, "It doesn't matter to me anymore. It's none of my concern."

Ron continued, "She also just lost her baby."

Myolie quickly turned around with a shocking expression on her face upon hearing his last statement. "Is she alright?? What happened?" Myolie stepped closer to Ron demanding him for an answer. "Ron!! Tell me!! What happened to Qian?"

Ron's face remained sorrowful, but calm as he spoke. "Some drunk driver hit her on the sideway of the streets below her apartment. She was hospitalized for almost a week. Luckily she survived but the baby didn't."

Myolie started to cry and Ron saw this so he stepped up and hugged her. Myolie let him hugged her as she rested her head on his shoulders while still crying. And then it was if she suddenly remember her reason for coming here, she quickly pushed him away and stepped back.

"Then you should be with her. Why are you here?"

"No, I should be here with you."

"Why?"

"Because this is where I belong. Please come back to me, Myolie." Ron pleaded, then he pulled her back into her arms. "Our baby need a father too.”

Myolie pushed Ron away from her slightly, just enough to look at his face, "How..how did you know?"

"It doesn't matter, what matter is that we should be together, Myolie."

"So you're here because of the baby?" Myolie said with a disappointment tone.

"No, I'm here because of both of you. Myolie, don't be silly. Qian and I were never together and we'll probably never will be. So many things has happened, it's hard to change the past. It's true that I do love and care for Qian. But I've never stopped loving you, Myolie. And I'm sorry if I've been emotionally unstable in the last few months or neglected you. I promise from now on, you and our baby will always be first. Please come back to me. Please let me make it up to you."

"How do I know I can trust that nothing will ever become of you and Qian? You don't know that."

"Well, for one thing. I think she's already in love with someone else. So you wont' have to worry about that part." Ron replied.

Myolie suspiciously looked at Ron to see if he was telling the truth, "With who?"

"With Ray. I think along the way, she really did fall in love with him. I hope things turn out good for her though."

"But you're still worry about her?"

"No, I'll let Ray do that from now on as soon as I can reach him."

"So I guess I'm your last resort heh?" Myolie said with a hint of jealousy.

"No. You’re not and you know that.” Then Ron kissed her hand and asked her for her forgiveness again.

Why did Myolie have to love him so much that she had already decided to accept him back from the very first moment she saw him in the front of her door. Of course, up until now she had only prolonged her decision because she wanted to be satisfied that at least Ron was sincere in his apology to her. Not caring anymore whatever the reason was or why he came looking for her, Myolie couldn't help but forgive Ron and accepted him back into her life.

Love does a strange thing to a person, it almost makes a person seem desperate enough just to be satisfied with one ounce of love being returned.

Of course, Ron did love Myolie much more than just an ounce. His love for her was enough to assure their happiness together for a very long time.
