“I think it’s going to rain soon, Michelle. You should take Michael home now before you have to drive in the wet traffic.”
Michelle looked up at the dark moving clouds above her head and nodded in agreement. “Yes, it’s also almost time for me to go home and cook dinner too.” With some hesitation, Michelle turned sideway and asked Qian, “Are you sure you don’t want to join us for dinner tonight, Qian? We’d love to have you with us.”
Qian smiled and patted her friend’s hand, “Yes, I’m sure. I haven’t gotten much appetite lately.”
“Well, you know you’re always welcome to come see if us, Qian. I don’t want you to stay in that apartment of yours too much. Just look at you, you’re so pale and fragile.”
“I’m fine, Michelle. I’m just back to my normal size that’s all. And I promise…. I’ll start eating better again now that I have finished the book, OK? Don’t worry about me.”
Having reassured and promised to Michelle that she’d take better care of her health, Qian waved good bye to Michelle and Michael as they drove away from the playground. About five minutes later, it started to rain heavily. Qian rushed across the streets and ran towards her apartment. However, she did not escape the fate of the wet rain as she had hoped. By the time she reached the front of her apartment door, she was shivering from the cold rain. Her soaked hair continuously dripped across her face, blocking her eyes from opening the door with her keys. Finally after a few short struggles with the keys and lock, Qian entered her apartment and turned on the light. She placed her keys on the kitchen counter, and saw an expected object in front of her. Qian could have sworn the flowers were real and alive. She blinked consecutively for several seconds, making sure the rain drops had not clouded her vision. Then Qian touched the petals of the white lilies and discovered that they were real.
Qian looked away from the flowers and whispered softly, “Ray?”
But no one was there and no one replied back to her. Quickly, she trotted down her little hallway and called out his name, “Ray? Are you here?” When she finally got to the last room, the baby’s room, her heart stopped beating as she slowly opened the door. It was dark inside with only glowing stars on the side of the walls and ceiling; Then she saw a shadow of a man standing in front of the window.
“Ray?” Qian called his name again.
Ray had been so focused on watching the rain splashing against the clear window; he had not heard her coming into the apartment. When he turned around to see her, he could not believe it was actually Qian standing in front of him. She was soaking wet from top to bottom shivering like a small mouse. She was also very frail and flimsy.
Qian was taken by surprise when Ray stepped away from the window and walked towards her, then he embraced her with a tight, firm hug as his arms wrapped around her small body. Qian could hardly breathe under his strong hold, but she was not about to complain. She rested her head onto his chest and continued to let him crush her against his body. In almost total darkness with nothing but the glowing stars above them and the flashes of lightning striking from a far distance outside of the little window, Ray and Qian remained in each other’s embrace for a long time.
And then Ray finally released her slowly, but only to be stopped by Qian, who was unwillingly to let him go.
“Please don’t leave me.” Qian pleaded softly. He could hear her sniffles as she spoke those tender words he had longed wanted to hear. He lifted her chin up with one hand and with his other hand, Ray turned on the light inside the room to see her face clearly.
Qian opened her eyes and stared back at Ray. He could see several drops of water dripping beneath her eyes, but he wasn’t sure if they were water of rain or water of tears. Slowly he bent down and kissed her eye lids and licked the liquid drops. It was salty. Ray smiled then cupped her face with both of his hands bringing her upward to meet his lips. What began as a soft, tender kiss turned into hungry, desperate kisses. Ray continued to pull Qian closer to him as they kissed, his hands pressing against her back towards his body. Qian tip-toed as high as she could so that she could receive his kisses.
Then Ray pulled away from their kiss. He wanted to make sure of her feelings for him, "Everything you wrote on that last chapter, it is true, Qian?” Ray spoke in a raspy voice.
Qian bit onto her bottom lips slightly and nodded. “Yes. I meant every word in it, Ray. You have to believe me.”
Ray’s eyes glimmered with tears at the sound of her final confirmation that she truly did love him. Then he released her and held out a small red velvet box.
Qian’s heart was beating expeditiously at the sight of the small boxt in front of her, then she opened it. Qian gaps at the sight of the beautiful 3-piece princess diamond cut ring in front of her.
“Will you marry me, Qian? I had wanted to ask you this that night, but never got the chance to do so….Please say you will.”
Now it was Qian’s eyes that were glimmering with tears of joy, “Yes, Ray. I’ll marry you.”
Ray smiled brightly and put the ring onto her finger then as he was about to kissed her hand, she accidentally sneezed.
”Hehehe…sorry I forgot you’re still soaking wet.”
Qian shook her head and replied, “It’s nothing. Just a sneeze.”
“Come on.” Ray said as he guided her to leave the room and turned off the light. “Go to your bedroom and I’ll be back with a towel.”
Qian was sitting on the edge of her bed when Ray came in with a large white towel. Standing behind her, he wiped the excess water off her hair hand and wrapped towel around her shoulders. Qian let him patted her dryly while she continued to look at his movement thru the front makeup dresser mirror.
“Ray? How come you didn’t come visit me at the hospital?” She asked.
Ray stopped drying her hair and looked up at her thru the mirror and answered, “I did. You were still unconscious at that time.”
”I woke up a few days later but you weren’t there either.” Qian said sadly.
“I saw Ron was there too and I had assumed he was all you needed. I….I thought that the lost of our baby was probably fate’s way of telling me that we weren’t meant to be….”
Qian turned away from the mirror and hugged Ray. She buried her face next to his stomach and cried. “No, I wanted for you to be there. I didn’t even want to wake up after I found out about our baby, Ray. But I woke up anyways because I was expecting for you to come…but you never did.”
Ray pulled her away from his stomach and sat down next to her. With both hands holding onto her shoulders facing her directly in front of him, Ray apologized, “I’m sorry, Qian. I should have been there for you. I didn’t know. It broke my heart that I had to leave you like that, but I really did thought you and Ron were getting back together….Ron...he seems to love you a lot too….and I thought if I just went away, it’d make it easier for all of us.”
But Qian shook her head and said “No…No….Ron and I already talked about everything before that. He was the one who actually told me that I was already in love with you. That was the whole purpose and reason he kissed me that night – and that’s when you also saw us together, Ray. Being a stubborn fool that I was, I let my pride get in the way and also because I didn’t know it myself either. I’m sorry too, Ray......And then….when I saw the card and the proposal you wrote, it was then that I realized how much I loved you too…I ran….I ran downstairs to find you again but I couldn’t find you…you were gone.”
“Oh my gosh, Qian…” Ray said and then he hugged her tightly to his chest. “..and that was how you got hit by the car?” His heart ached when he felt Qian’s head nodding against his shoulder. If it wasn’t because of him, she might not have been in the accident. “I’m so sorry, Qian….it’s my fault..I shouldn’t have been so upset and said those things I said that night.”
“No, you were right to be upset at me. It was I who was confused and didn’t know how to reply to your question. But now I know…Ray, you’re not a replacement…please believe me?”
“Sshh…please don’t cry anymore, Qian. You’re breaking my heart every time I hear you cry. Yes, yes I believe you now.”
“I can’t help but cry, Ray. It was also my fault that we lost our baby…I should have watched where I was going…I shouldn’t have stand so close next to the road….”
Ray lifted Qian’s face from his shoulders again, “Let’s not blame ourselves anymore, Qian. We are still young…we’ll have another baby….as many as you want. I promise you….”
With both of his hands now cupping her face, Ray kissed her soft lips. Qian had stopped crying as she welcome his warming touches on her lips. She also kissed him back and let his tongue slipped inside of her mouth. Carefully, Ray opened each button on her wet blouse and pushed it off her thin shoulders. Qian stopped their kissing and looked down shyly after having realized what Ray was about to do.
“Ray, can we….can we turn off the light?”
“No, I want to see you.”
Qian looked shyly away from his gaze.
He tilted her face back up to look at him and asked, “Are you afraid I’ll see your scar?”
She nodded. Qian had 6 inch scar on her left abdomen from the cesarean operation when they removed the baby.
“That scar is our baby’s imprint. We should always remember it every time we see it to remind us that it was the baby who brought us together in the first place.” Ray said.
“I know. I’m…I’m just afraid…that’s all.” Qian whispered. But soon any trace of fear she had was slowly erased when Ray pushed her down against the bed then bent down to kiss the scar on her stomach. Qian closed her eyes and another drop of tear fell against the pillow. She continued to keep her eyes closed as she let him placed kisses on her body and touched her intimately.
“Qian, open your eyes.”
She obeyed his order and opened her eyes only to find him looking over on top of her face.
“Tell me you love me again.”
“I love you, Ray.” Qian whispered softly next to his ears.
“I love you too, Qian.” Ray replied happily. Satisfied that she finally called his name correctly this time around. And then he continued to kiss her.
The rain was still pouring outside, but neither people noticed it as they were otherwise occupied – making love to each other.
9 month and 10 days later, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lam gave birth to twin babies – a boy and a girl.

{except from “SINGLE MOMs” : Chapter 28}
…When I began this book, I had no intention of mentioning “LOVE” except only in terms of a-mother-to-a-child. I must confess that life isn’t always what you expect or hope for it to be. It doesn’t guarantee that the one you love will love you back or that you both will end up together in the end. But as I have recently discovered, sometime the most wonderful things can happen most unexpectedly. I thought I’d never fall in love again, much less to someone who was incapable loving in the first place. But I was wrong. I have heard him once said that Only Fools Fall In Love, I never believe him of course. But now I believe it’s true. We both have been very foolish indeed. Loving each as much as we do, but always foolishly hurting each other as well.
And so I dedicate this last chapter to the one I love and am still waiting to return to me – R.L.

Only Fools Fall in Love (by mollyeh13 @ http://allpoetry.com/Poem/480586)
If you ask me my friend
About this awful game called love
I'd tell you that your heart's not worth
The difficult things in does
Because only fools fall in love
Silly fools who sit and linger
And wait around for more
People say they'd rather have loved and lost
Than to never have loved at all
But what is love if I have to suffice to every unwritten law
And so I say to this, no way
I don't want that kind of life
But I feel I should warn you of the heartache waiting for you
Around love's every corner
I'm telling you this in spite of myself
And now I have probably said too much
My meaning has now been seen through
And you have now discovered
I have fallen deeply in love with you
