Ray glanced over and noticed that Lynda was still putting on her lip-gloss and powdering her face. Ray didn’t mind a girl who valued beauty and took great care in oneself, but sometime Lynda proved to be a bit over the edge with her compulsive obsessive personality, which sometime annoyed Ray. Or maybe he was annoyed because she proved to be more vain than him.
“Ray!! Lynda!! Glad to see you’ve finally made it.” Myolie yelled then waved at Ray and Lynda while standing at the end the 100ft boat. Myolie was wearing a colorful yellow, deep v-back summer dress, which made her looked like a sunshine flower shining vibrantly underneath the clear beautiful day. Her radiant energy did not go unnoticed as Ron stood inside the glass front view window of the boat gazing at his soon-to-be-wife.
Then Ron shifted his eyes toward the other side of the boat where Qian had been sitting quietly. Ron remembered Qian used to possess the same vibrant beauty and energy as Myolie did. But that person is no longer here. This is not to say that Ron disapproved of Qian’s appearance at all. As a matter of fact, he was quite please with her appearance. She was wearing a pair of high cut white Capri topped with a soft pink camisole. Even though her hair was slightly pulled backed with a small clip, several of her hair strains managed to escape as they were being blown by the soft wind.
“Qian! I’d like for you to meet two of our friends.” Myolie said.
Qian, who had been in deep thought to herself while looking into the open sea, turned around to greet Myolie’s friends. Her sweet smile suddenly became frown as she immediately recognized Ray.
“It’s you! What are you doing here?” Qian exclaimed and quickly stood up from where she was sitting restfully only moments ago.
“Well, well, well…if it isn’t Miss Vanishing aka Pink Bunny Lady.” Ray said as he walked casually up to her.
“Huh? Excuse me? You two know each other?” Myolie asked.
They both said “Yes” at the same time.
“We’ve met, twice actually. And on…might I say …very interesting circumstances too.” Ray commented as he flashed Qian one of his mischievous, charming smile.
Qian was about to make a rebuttal to his comment but then she saw Ron coming out to greet his friends so she decided to hold her caustic remark.
“Ray, old boy! Glad you could finally make it. We were about to go without you.” Turning to Lynda, Ron said, “Hi Lynda. Nice to see you.”
“Hi Ron.” Lynda gave Ron one of her beautiful, seductive smile. If Ron wasn’t already taken by Myolie in the first place, Lynda might have gone for Ron. There was something dashingly attractive about a real-nice gentleman, not to mention that he was absolutely gorgeous too. Of course that didn’t mean that Lynda was complaining about Ray, since it was quite obvious that Ray was the one who possessed more of sex appeal with his sharp cunning personality.
Ron turned back to Ray and gave a pat on his back hinting for Ray to follow him. “Come on, I gotta talk to you.” Turning back to the three ladies, Ron said “You girls go on up and tell the rest we’ll be right there later. Myolie, tell my Dad we’re all set as soon as I pull up the anchor.”
Ray followed Ron towards the back of the boat as Ron began to pull up the anchor.
”What’s that 4-eyes chick doing here?” Ray asked as he reached over to lend a helping hand pulling up the anchor.
Ron was confused at Ray’s comment, “Who??”
“Qian, that girl back there. Who else?”
“What do you mean 4-eyes chick? She’s not wearing any glasses.” Ron stated.
Ray smiled to himself because he knew exactly why she wasn’t wearing her glasses, because he had stepped and broken them.
“You’re slow, Ron. Here, give me that anchor. We’ll never set off in time with you yanking on that anchor like that.”
Ron stepped aside and let Ray have a shot at pulling up the anchor.
“Speaking of Qian, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”
”What? What’s there to talk about her? Did I tell you she was the one who walked out on an interview we were supposed to have. Jessica was on my back the entire week about wanting me to call her back for another interview.”
“But apparently you had refused to call her back ?”
”Yes, what did you expect? She walked out. It was her lost, not mine. That’s what I told Jessica too.”
“What did you do to make her walk out like that? Seems not very her style. You MUST have done something to upset her, Ray.”
Ray plopped the anchor onto the back of the boat, then looked up at Ron.
“I didn’t do anything. She was the one who panicked and called me names.”
“Knowing you, you probably deserved it.”
”Hey, what kind of friend are you? Not taking my side. Geesh.”
“I’m just kidding Ray. But seriously, how about giving her a second chance. I think that book she was writing is really important to her. Come on, for old time sake?” Ron pleaded.
“What’s in it for me? What’s in it for you? And why are you so concern?” Ray raised his eyebrows with curiosity.
“It’s not what you think Ray. Qian and I have been friends since were young. We’ve lost touch all these years. Myolie and I just bumped into her last week. The same day you had the interview with her.”
“OK, but that doesn’t tell me what’s in it for me.” Ray exclaimed.
Ron shook his head with disapproval as both men started to walk towards the front of the boat.
“For once Ray, stop thinking just about yourself. Have a heart.”
”I do have a heart, and it’s beating quite rapidly after I just helped out a friend pulled that anchor up back there.”
Both men laughed as they rejoined the small crowd.
“Hey Ray! How’s it going my son!”
“Good Good..nice day heh Mr. Ng?”
“Definitely a nice day for fishing and swimming I’ll say.”
While the men continued to talk about fishing and whatnots, the other family members stayed inside the boat staying cool and out of the bright sunlight.
Myolie, Lynda and Qian, however were on the top of the boat.
“Qian, aren’t you putting a bit too much sunscreen on?” asked Myolie.
“My skin is so pale, I’m afraid I’d get burn under this hot sun, Myolie.”
“I think a little sun would do you good. Look at you, I can already see the difference in your cheeks. I think it does quite nicely for you with rosy cheeks like that Qian.”
“Am I burning already??” Qian asked as she touched both her cheeks.
As both ladies were busily talking amongst themselves, Lynda had already changed into her 2-piece bikini.
“Aren’t you girls changing into your swimming suit?” asked Lynda.
“I didn’t bring mine” Qian replied.
“Well, if Qian doesn’t wear one. I wont either.” Myolie said.
Lynda shrugged as if she could careless if they joined her, “Well, I’m gonna take a little nap while sun tanning. Wake me up when we’re there.” She lay down on her perfectly flat stomach, reached over her back then untied her top off.
Qian and Myolie looked at one another and smiled. Both girls thought of the same thing – Lynda was definitely NOT their type.
“Come on, let’s go downstairs and see what the guys are doing.”
Before Qian could answer, Myolie was already a few steps ahead of her and halfway down the stairs. Looking over at Lynda, Qian decided it was probably better to actually do something else than join Lynda – even though she was dreading to see that pervert again. “They both are a perfect match.” Qian thought to herself as she too followed Myolie.
By now, Mr. Ng had gone back inside and joined the rest of his family leaving only Ron and Ray to themselves.
“OK. I give her 2nd interview, OK? Would you stop making me feel guilty and drop the subject?”
“Good. I knew you have a soft heart.”
”Whatever, I only did it because I happen to like her manuscript as well. Don’t tell her I say that or she might actually LIKE me.”
Ron gave Ray a weird half-raised eyebrow look and replied, “Don’t worry Ray. You’re not exactly every girl’s type. And definitely not Qian.” Then Ron gave a loud laugh as Ray gave him a bloodthirsty stare.
“What are you guys laughing about?” asked Myolie.
“Hi ladies. Wanta join us for some fishing?” asked Ron.
Myolie gave a yucky face indicating her distaste in fishing.
“Oh come on Myolie, you know you always love it when I catch the fish and let you reel it in.” Ron teased.
“Well, just as long as I don’t have to hook up the bait then that’s fine with me. Are you in, Qian?”
“Sure.” Qian replied casually.
Ray looked over at Qian with a mocking look. Qian ignored his looked as she walked passed him and reached for a fishing pole next to him.
“Do you mind getting out of my way?” Qian gave him an annoyed dagger look.
Ray continued to irritate her with one of his charming smile. He stepped aside, letting Qian passed him.
This was their third time meeting, Ray must admit he was having fun running into this rascal. She proved to be a very interesting character. First it was the sexy Pink Bunny Lady, then the prude nerd novelist, and now this.
“What are you looking at?” Qian asked annoyingly.
“What? Can’t I look at a beautiful lady?” Ray replied casually. He wasn’t lying, of course. The sun and ocean sea were very complementing on her complexion. It made her cheeks rosier; and without her glasses, Ray could see the crystal sparks in her eyes whenever she gave him one of those death-threatening glare. But the real reason he purposely said that to her was because he knew she’d be irritated and expected such comments from him. So Ray went along with the game and continued to play with the role of a pervert.
“Stop looking at me! You..”
“Eh…I haven’t touched you today…not yet. So don’t go on calling me pervert, rascal!”
“What are you two fussing about?” asked Ron.
They both replied by saying “Nothing.”
The next one-hour proved to be unsuccessful as neither of them caught any fish. Myolie, who was already tired of standing there doing nothing while Ron re-hooking his bait, decided to go for a swim.
“Hey, Your dad’s already anchor the boat. I’m gonna go for a swim.”
”I think I’m gonna join you Myolie. This sun is killing me. I need something to cool me down.” Said Ray as he followed Myolie into the changing room.
Seeing that it was just the two of them alone now, Qian wanted an excuse to leave too but she couldn’t come up with any. She definitely didn’t want to join Myolie and Ray going swimming and she couldn’t go inside since she didn’t know any of the family members. So she was stuck with Ron.
Ron noticed the silence that fell again after Myolie and Ray left, so he initiated a conversation with Qian.
“Tell me about the book you are writing, Qian. Ray tells me it’s called ‘Single Moms’. That sounds pretty interesting.” Ron asked.
He was standing next to Qian. Qian could see his face clearly today. She wished she had not listen to Michelle and wore contact lenses. At least when she had on her eyeglasses, she could shield or hid behind them. But of course since that pervert broke her glasses, she had to settle for the fallback contact lenses.
“What do you want to know about it?” Qian asked.
“Why did you write about Single Moms?” Ron asked curiously.
Qian looked away from him and focused her eyes back to the sea. “It was something I feel strongly about and have knowledge of.”
Ron was surprised when he heard her reply, never did he imagine Qian was…as Single Mom.
“Are you….a single mom then?” Ron asked.
Qian turned back to look at Ron and shook her head, “No. It’s more about my friend. But sometime I feel like a single mom too since we both raise him up ourselves.”
“I see.” Ron felt somewhat relieved that Qian was not a single mom yet. It would pain him if it were true because he wouldn’t want Qian to be a single mom. She deserved more than that. She deserved to be love and marry to a man who loved her. She deserved to have a happy family.
Ron felt that it was probably safe now for him to step onto a more intimate discussion since no one else was around them, so he proceeded to ask the question that has been on his mind , “You never answered me why you never went with us to the Australia trip. And why did you become a different person when we came back from the trip?”
Qian didn’t know to answer Ron. His questions brought too many painful memories back for her. Memories which had been long suppressed and almost forgotten. Initially her, Ron, Myolie and a few other friends were supposed to go on a weeklong trip to Australia. But on the night before the day of the trip, Qian received a phone call from Michelle saying she was at the hospital. Qian had quickly dropped everything she was doing and ran to the hospital to be by Michelle’s side. Perhaps it was that night that Qian had finally awaken from the dream she had be living in.
