“Michelle!! Oh My gosh!! They said you tried to kill yourself!!” Qian exclaimed.
Michelle started to break into tears when she saw Qian.
“Michelle, what happened? Qian pleaded as she kneeled down beside Michelle’s bedpost.
“Oh Qian, I should have never ran off with Josh. I should have known..I should have known…” Michelle cried.
“What? What happened? What did he do to you???? Tell me!!!” Qian demanded and stood up immediately.
Michelle shook her head, “Qian. I thought he really did love me. I bought into everyone of his lies when he said he loved me…that he’d married me…but they were all lies, Qian. ”
”Michelle…did he…did he rape you??”
“No, it was me who was stupid. I was so stupidly in love with him that I listen to all his lies. And when I found out I was pregnant with his child….I told him about it….but he accused me of sleeping with other men and said it wasn’t his child…and that..I…was only using the baby as an excuse to get into his rich family…. Qian, I swear it’s Josh’s baby…I never slept with anyone else….I swear. I didn’t care for his money, Qian…I didn’t mean to drink all those pills…I really didn’t….”
Qian was shocked and angry, but she needed to calm herself. She needed to be strong for Michelle. “Shhh…It’s OK Mich. I believe you. I believe you….” Qian held onto Michelle as both girls cried until their tears went dry. Although Michelle was 3 years older than Qian, Michelle had always been dependent on Qian for emotional support. Qian was always the optimistic one, just one word from Qian and Michelle knew everything would be alright.
Several hours later, when Michelle finally fell asleep in Qian’s arms, Qian went to stand by the room’s window. It was already beginning to be daylight. Today, she was supposed to join Myolie and Ron and their friends for a weeklong trip to Australia, but now it seemed that was no longer possible; Michelle needed her to be by her side. Qian gave a stressful sigh before deciding that she would go see and talk Josh in the afternoon.
Later in the afternoon, Qian took a taxicab to Josh’s house on the hillside. Though she had never gone to his house before, but she knew where he lived. Josh’s house was one of the big mansions on the hillside, near Ron’s and Myolie’s houses. Qian had only once visited Ron at his home, it was during the time when Ron was really sick and couldn’t go to school for an entire week so Qian offered to bring his homework over for him. As the taxicab approached the main gate entrance of Josh’s house, Qian felt nervous and afraid. She felt like a small child who had just been placed into a big place, she only hoped she could make something right by coming here to see Josh. Qian rang the doorbell. At first she thought no one was home, but a few minutes later someone opened the door.
A short middle age woman stepped out in her maid uniform.
“Excuse me, is Josh home?”
“Who may I ask is looking for him?” The woman asked with a distant tone as she gave Qian an obnoxious look.
“Can you please tell him that Michelle’s friend wants to talk to him, please?” Qian replied politely.
Before the lady could reply, a male’s voice hollered out loud in the hallway behind the entrance door, “Who’s there Mary?”
The woman opened the door widely indicating to her young master that it was Qian who was looking for him.
“Oh, it’s you. What are you doing here? ”
“Can I….Can I please speak to you privately, Josh?”
Josh didn’t need another person meddling into his business or his helper to know about his current problem so he signaled Qian to follow him into his Dad’s office.
As soon as both entered the office, Josh quickly closed the door and went to sit down in his father’s brown leather chair.
“Did Michelle tell you to come here? Are you here to collect money for Michelle? If you are, you can forget about it!”
“How could you say that, Josh?? Michelle loves you!! She’s not into your money! And that baby is yours.” Qian exclaimed.
Josh gave a mocking laughed then stood up and walked towards Qian. He looked directly into her eyes and said, “Who do you think you are? Coming here telling me this. You think I REALLY care if the baby is mine or not? Get this straight -- I was only playing with her. OK???!!! Don’t blame me if your friend is stupid! I know all about you orphanage girls. You really have high hopes of catching a rich guy aren’t you?? Well, you can tell her to forget about her BIG CATCH this time. Coz that just isn’t gonna happen.”
Qian was flabbergasted at his words. Never in her life had she been so insulted or treated this way. Qian couldn’t hold her anger anymore and without a second thought she raised her small hand and slapped his face real hard. But the slap didn’t seem to bother Josh at all, it even made him smiled more wickedly. Qian raised her hand attempting to slap him again but he stopped her this time.
“You ruthless bastard!!!” Qian yelled.
“You’re a feisty one, aren’t you?? Very different from your friend, Michelle. I think I might give you a try too…” Josh grabbed hold of both Qian’s wrists and bend them backward behind her.
“What are you doing?? Let go of me!!!!!!!!!” Qian’s yelled. But soon she realized her mistake for angering Josh, because the look he giving her brought chills to her bone. “Please….please let go of me…” Qian pleaded.
Josh put his face real close to her and said, “You really don’t think I would rape you, did you? With that puny body of yours, who would want to even touch you!! You’re like a child!”
Josh gave another obnoxious laugh then released her, “I have no interest in little girls. So run home and play with your dolls and mind your own business from now on. If I ever see you or Michelle at my house or in front of my face again, I will do more than this. Do you understand me?”
Qian hated herself for being weak in front of Josh as her tears were already falling from her eyes quickly. She was trying hard not to shake underneath his perverted scrutiny.
“Did you hear what I say?? Don’t come bothering me anymore!” Josh repeated.
Qian slowly nodded.
“Good.”
Josh gave a great loud laugh as he knew what Qian was afraid of him, “Now, get out of my house!”
Qian could still hear his echoed laugh as she ran out of his room and down into the hallway.
She never told Michelle, of course, that she had gone looking for Josh that day, it would have only hurt Michelle more if she found out about it.
That entire week was the longest week of her life as Qian stayed inside the hospital with Michelle everyday until she fully recovered. She was glad that Michelle had finally decided to keep the baby despite of Josh. As orphans, they both knew how precious a single life was. They have never pity themselves that they were orphans and that other kids had parents while they didn’t. They just knew that they were blessed enough to have been given a chance to live this life. At night while Michelle was fast asleep, Qian would stare up into the stars thinking about hers and Michelle’s future. When they were little, both girls used to stay up late at night and made up fairy tales about how they would meet their future Prince Charming and how happy their lives would be. Looking across the room at Michelle, Qian realized that the dream was no longer true for Michelle – and maybe it might not be true for her as well. Her thought then drifted to Ron. She’d never forget the day when they both first met at the playground outside the church, he was like an angel sent below from heaven. Qian had cried herself to sleep every night that entire week. She wished things didn’t happened the way they did. She wished Michelle didn’t have to go thru the heartache and pain. And last but not least, she wished Ron was there with her.
The Monday when school resumed again after that long week of Spring Break, Qian was on her way to the lunch break schoolyard to meet Ron and Myolie, who had just come back from the trip in Australia. It had been a long week for Qian and she wanted so much to see Ron again, she needed his comfort and understanding. When Qian arrived, she saw him sitting on the bench reading a book. Qian smiled secretly to herself, thinking how much happiness she had already felt just by seeing the sight of him. She was about to holler out his name when she saw Myolie walking up behind Ron’s back and covering his eyes with her hands.
“Guess who?” Myolie asked.
“Um….Qian?” Ron said jokingly.
Myolie released her hands and pretended to be mad, “No.”
Ron smiled, stood up, and walked around the bench. He stood behind Myolie and wrapped his arms around her waist, “I knew it was you, Myolie. I was only kidding.”
“Hmph….” Myolie unwrapped his arms and walked away from him.
“We’ve only dated one week and you’re already mad at me? How petty of you!” Ron teased.
“I’m not a petty! And besides I wasn’t really mad at you.” Myolie exclaimed then she and Ron both looked up and saw Qian standing in front of them. They were surprised to find her standing all this time without saying anything to them.
Myolie quickly ran up to Qian and hugged her, “Oh we missed you so much!! How come you didn’t come to the trip?? What happened Qian?”
Qian quickly wiped her eyes and murmured something about having dust in her eyes.
“Qian, is everything OK? You don’t look so well.” Ron said as he walked up to Myolie and Qian.
Qian turned away from them and tried to shield her tears as she attempt to remove any trace of the tears that had fallen on her face.
Myolie walked around Qian and saw that her eyes had been red, “Qian? What happened? Why are you crying?”
“It’s nothing. I have dust in my eyes.” Qian replied.
Ron knew Qian was lying, he could sense she was hiding something. “Myolie, why don’t you go get us some lunch first. We’ll wait for you here.”
Myolie nodded and left to buy lunches. When Ron saw that Myolie was out of sight, he finally turned Qian around and asked her the same question. “Qian, what happened? Is something wrong?”
Qian shook her head, “No…No I’m fine. It’s nothing. I have to get back to class….I need to catch up on some reading..I’ll see you guys later.” She didn’t wait for his reply before running off.
For the next several weeks, Qian tried to stay away from Myolie and Ron. And even though Ron did continuously try to ask her what happened, but each time she avoided the question and only further withdrew from their friendship.
It was then that Ron had noticed Qian was beginning to build a wall between them.
