Chapter 7

Today, Ron had asked those same questions again. Of course, Qian could not tell him the real reason she had withdrew from their friendship – it was because she was in love with him. At the time, seeing him with Myolie together, she did not dare to confess or show her feelings. It was too late for her then, just like it was too late for her now. Ron and Myolie were getting married in a few short weeks. Perhaps the only thing she could do to put his curiosity to rest is by explaining to him about Michelle’s situation at the time.

After hearing Michelle’s story, Ron stood quietly gazing out into the sea before turning back to Qian, “You should have told me. I would have like to be there, Qian. I would wanted to help you and Michelle. You were only 16 at the time, how could you have carried on such a burden in helping Michelle all by yourself?”

Qian gave Ron an understanding smile, “I knew you would try to help us, Ron. That’s why I didn’t want you to get involve. But all that is the past now. Michelle and I have managed just fine raising Michael by ourselves.”

“So then I guess that book you’re writing is about Michelle?”

Qian nodded.

”What are you two talking about that is so serious.” Myolie asked as she dried her wet hair.

Qian and Ron were both surprised to find Myolie already returning from her short swim.

In wanting to lessen up mellow atmosphere just now between her and Ron, Qian switched topic, “Hey, you’re done swimming already? I was just about to go join you.”

“Args, the water was too cold for me. Even in this weather, I could only stay in it for 15 minutes. I can let you borrow my other swimming suit if you still want to go swimming.”

”Would you mind? Where is it?”

“It’s inside my bag. It’s the red one.”

“OK, I think I can find it. See you guys later.”

Qian quickly trotted off to the changing room.

About a quarter of mile from where the boat was anchor, there was a little small island, which stretched only about 2,000 sq.ft.

Ray had found himself the perfect spot to rest after a long swim. He stretched his arms out and put them underneath his head as he lay there on the white sandy shore. After about a 5 minute of nothing but the sound of the sea splashing against the shore, Ray was awaken with a different kind of splashing sound. Ray took off his sunglasses and looked out into the sea following the direction of the sound. Someone was swimming this way. Ray could see someone’s head popping up and down the ocean waves. Not curious to see who was heading his way, Ray lay back on the sand and put his sunglasses back on. He lay for another 3 minutes before he noticed that there was only the sound of splashing waves now. Ray looked up again into the sea. To his surprise he did not see anyone out there anymore. Whoever was swimming his way should have reached here by now, but no one was in sight.

Then Ray heard a loud cry.

“What the heck?” Ray exclaimed as he quickly notice someone’s cry for help.

Ray quickly took off his sunglasses and sped off towards the ocean. He dived into the water and swam as fast as he could towards the direction of the cry. With a few short stroke Ray finally manage to come upon the person, who was floating helplessly on top of the waves. Ray quickly wrapped his left arm around the body and leveled up the head then swam back to shore. Ray carried the small body and lay it down onto the sand. After a few failed attempts in trying to wake the person up, Ray resorted to doing CPR.

{Sound : Cough Cough}

Ray released his hold and sat up right when he noticed that the person was breathing again.

“Are you OK?” Ray asked.

The person blinked confusingly for several moments not recognizing the savior’s face.

“Qian! Are you OK?” Ray asked again, but this time with urgency as he began to shake Qian’s slim shoulders.

The sun was shinning brightly behind Ray’s back causing Qian unable to see Ray’s face, but even though she could not see him she recognized his voice immediately. Qian quickly tried to sit up, but Ray’s hands pushed her back.

“No, lie down. Stay rested.” Ray ordered.

Qian looked down at her body then to Ray’s hands and noticed that they were still set on both her shoulders.

”Get your hands off me.” Qian demanded as she brushed off his hands from her.

Ray released his hold and sat back down to the sand next to her, “So much for saving you. Not even a thank you. Tell me, are you always this ungrateful?”

Qian knew she was wrong for speaking rudely to him, after all he did really save her this time. “Thank You.” Qian finally murmured after a few minutes.

Ray stood back up and was heading towards the ocean when Qian interrupted him, “Where are you going?”

Ray looked back and replied, “Swimming back to the boat of course. I certainly don’t want you to start calling me a pervert because I just performed CPR on you.”

Qian brought up her hand to her lips, “Wait…Can you wait for me awhile?”

Ray asked mockingly, “What for?”

Qian diverted from his eyes and replied, “My legs, I think I still have cramps on my left leg. That’s why I drowned earlier. Could you…could you at least wait until it’s gone before you swim back?”

Ray walked back and sat back down on the sand next to Qian. Both people remained quiet as they sat there waiting for Qian’s leg to recover.

After 15 minutes, Ray finally broke their silence and asked “How’s your leg now? Any better?”

“I think it’s better, but I can still feel the muscle twitching a bit. I’m afraid if I go back in the water I’ll get the cramp again.”

“Well, when are you gonna be OK to swim back? The sun is beginning to set.”

Qian detected that Ray seemed rather annoyed with her and impatient to get back to the boat, “If I’m wasting your time, you can go ahead back if you want to.” Qian went back to massage her left calf.

With annoyance, Ray pushed Qian’s hands aside “Here, give me your leg. With your weak hands, we’ll never get your leg back to normal.”

To his surprise, Qian did not stop him from massaging her leg and she did not call him any names either.

“Feeling any better?”

Qian nodded. “I think I’m OK now. I guess we should go ahead and swim back to the boat.”

Ray stood up and offered a helping hand for Qian to stand up.

“You swim first, I’ll swim after you. Just in case.”

Qian nodded and they both started to swim back to the boat safely.
