Chapter 1

Broken China On The Kitchen Floor

I always heard that pain was weakness leaving the body, but to me it was something that reminded that I was alive. It was also a reminder of the constant mistakes I had kept making and as I lay sprawled out on my back on the dirty brown flooring, my eyes cast to the ceiling, I could feel the throbbing pain around my left eye. I wasn’t sure what I had done to deserve the hit this time, but I’m sure Iseya had his reasons. If I really thought about it, it probably had something to do with the fact that I got the wrong kind of beer but it wasn’t my fault. The store on the corner was out of Asahi.

I let my head drop to the side and I could now see clearly into the kitchen. There were a couple of blue broken plates on the ground, the pieces standing out against the white linoleum flooring. They were pieces of my grandmothers China my mom snuck to me before my father kicked me out for having an older boyfriend. I guess he was right, along with Kai. Being sixteen and having a boyfriend who was twenty-eight wasn’t the smartest thing, but Iseya was something special. I loved him or so I thought.

Kai would be mad at me for sure. He kept telling me to get away from Iseya that I could come live with him, but I couldn’t do that. To be honest I didn’t love him anymore, I didn’t even like him, I was just too afraid of what he might do to me if I tried to leave. Thinking back I should have listened to Kai, he always knew what was best for me since we were little. He was the one that taught me how to play drums.

I sat up from the floor slowly by back protesting after the hard impact with the side of the coffee table. I reached back and I could feel a hot, sticky liquid on my back and when I pulled my hand back the red stain of blood was on my fingers. The sound of my cell phone going off caught my attention and I reached for the black device that was sitting haphazardly on one of the cushions of the forest green couch.

Social Distortion was blaring through it which meant only one thing, it was Kai. I looked at the Hello Kitty watch on my wrist and sighed. I was supposed to meet him for lunch at 11:30 and it was 12:05. When I answered the phone his panicked voice assaulted me.

“Katou are you okay?” Kai asked.

“I don’t think I’m going to make it to lunch Kai. I’m a little laid up at the moment,” I said with a groan as I pulled myself up onto that stupid green couch that I hated so much.

“Did he hit you again?” Kai asked, his voice becoming angry.

“I got the wrong beer.” Kai let out a curse under his breath. I could hear him scrambling on the other side of the line and closed my eyes.

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes okay . . . fuck that guy. This is the last time Katou. You’re staying with me.”

I didn’t say anything before I hung up the phone and let it fall onto the couch beside me. The silence in the apartment was deafening and comforting all at the same time. It surrounded me, made me feel numb. I didn’t mind the numbness or the silence. It was better that the pain, the screaming, the hitting. Yeah, it was better to be numb.
