Chapter 2

‘Fighting!’ Abby encouraged herself before entering the office where she was supposed to be interviewed for the job.

To make a good impression, she was wearing a knee-length black skirt, a white shirt and a black jacket from the same material that the skirt was made of. Her hair was pulled in a low ponytail and black-framed glasses were ensuring her sight. Instead of high heels, she wore a pair of shiny black flats. After all, you can’t get dressed in any color at an interview. You need to be serious, right?

“Sit down, please.”
“Thank you.” Abby bowed as she sat down, then crossed her legs without showing anything under her skirt.
“Your name, please?”
“Abigail Andres.”
“Studies?”
“Isang Han University, Busan. Major in acting.”
“Why do you want this job?”
“Because I’ve always wanted to be a secretary. I can handle paper work with all ease.”
“Why haven’t you chosen a job that implied acting?”
“Even though I have a Major in acting, I cannot play the role of an actor. I have stage fright.”
“Oh, I understand now. Well, miss Andres. Thank you for dropping by! Please leave your Curriculum Vitae on the desk and you may leave.”
“Thank you as well.” Abby put her CV on the desk, bowed and then left.

Opening the door, she saw Young Saeng dressed in a suit, waiting in the halls.

“You’re here already?” he lifted his look and saw Abby exiting the office.
“Mhm,” she nodded. “Finished already!” then she smiled.
“And? You did good?”
”I hope so… “
“Oh, before I forget…” Young Saeng easily approached Abby and hugged her.
“Huh? What’s this for?” Abby put her hands behind his back.
”I need luck~!”

Abby chuckled.

“Silly you! Of course you’ll succeed!” she pulled away and looked into his eyes. “Fighting!” she shook her fist.

Young Saeng smiled as he did the same with his fist. “Fighting!”

“Is someone here named Heo Young Saeng?” a secretary came out of the office, holding a chart and a pencil.
“Oh, yes, it’s me.”

The secretary turned her attention over to Young Saeng and smiled.

“It’s your turn, please come in.”
“Um… Sure, right away!” Young Saeng said confidently, then looked back at Abby.
“You sound more confident than ever! That’s how I want you to be! Fight!” Abby encouraged him as she could.

Young Saeng could do more than smile seeing her positive mood and hug her again.

“I have my own reasons… I need my part of luck.” He whispered in her ear.
“Good luck! Fighting!” Abby continued boosting his confidence and luck, waving imaginary flags.

Young Saeng entered the office and bowed.

“Yes, yes. Please sit down.”

He bowed again as thanking and sat down on the chair in front of the main boss’s desk.

“I see your name is Heo Young Saeng…”
“Yes.”
“How old are you?”
“24.”
“Have you finished any university?”
“Yes, Isanghan University, major in Design.”
“Isanghan? The girl before finished Isanghan as well! Do you know her?”
“Yes, yes I know her, but not for much time.”
“Abigail Andres sounds familiar to you?”
“N-... No, not at all…”
“Oh well, Nevermind” the boss waved his hand through the air. “So…”

Abby was waiting outside for him. They will be going to the ice cream store again, after all! It was worth waiting those long minutes. The time hardly passed and it was really long after Young Saeng finally got out from the office – with a pretty disappointed, rainy expression. Abby’s enthusiasm dropped to the ground.

“Wh-… What’s wrong…?” a tiny drop of skepticism could be readable in her voice.

. The first thought that passed through her mind was failure. Abby was afraid of this – if he failed now, she would be gone from Earth.
Young Saeng easily walked towards her without looking up from the ground. As he reached her, he put his arms around her and hugged her tightly.

“What’s wrong…?”
“I… I…”
“Young Saeng…”
“I got in!” his face lightened up in an instant and he jumped around happily.
“I’m so glad for you, Young Saeng!” Abby’s face was covered by a radiating smile as she was clapping her hands in enjoyment.
“I can’t believe this… After all these years… Gosh!”
“Maybe it’s the angels’ work!” Abby said it without thinking of her angelic facture, but realized it just after she finished the sentence.
“Angels?” Young Saeng stopped in his track. “Don’t kid on me, Abby! It’s no angel implied in this!”
“Why don’t you believe in angels, Young Saeng?”
“Because if there were angels, then they would have protected us from every bad thing. How many misfortunes happened until now? Where are those “angels”, Abby?” Young Saeng did the quotation marks with his fingers around the word “angels”, stressing it a bit.
“But… But they are…”
“Abby… I don’t want to be influent over your opinion on angels, it’s just that I don’t believe!” Young Saeng sounded like apologizing.

Abby sighed heavily. She was truly disappointed. What angel wouldn’t be once the one you protect just confesses that he doesn’t think you’re real? Young Saeng put his hand over her shoulder and tried lighting up the mood.

“Shall we go eat ice cream now?”
“Okay….” Abby sighed again. She wasn’t that enthusiastic about the ice cream anymore.
“Do you want me to drive there? Or shall we walk?”
“Doesn’t matter to me…”
“Aw, now don’t be rainy! What happened?”
”Nothing…”
“Is it because of the angels thing?”
“I said it’s nothing, Young Saeng… I’ll just get over it!”
“Abby…” Young Saeng stopped and turned around, facing her. He put his hands on her shoulders and looked at her. “Look, I don’t want to see your face like this…”
“Then don’t look at it…”
“Stop being so stubborn, gosh! I don wanna be harsh into this, but… I can’t find another way to say it.”
“I know it, you don’t believe in angels. I don’t need anymore explanations.”
“I’m sorry, Abby. But it’s not as if I’d be the only one!”
“I understood since you told me. Now let’s be there before it gets closed.”

‘She’s so weird… What’s wrong? It’s not as if I said something that would be so abnormal!’ he thought.
‘He’s such a dumass. At least he could have told it without making it so obvious. Didn’t he think a bit that he would hurt my feelings?! Oh wait. I forgot that he doesn’t know that I’m an angel… Oh well. I’ll just play that I didn’t hear him and everything’s alright!’ Abby thought.

“WAH!” she jumped.
“I thought you were gonna stone there. “ Young Saeng was waving his hand in front of her eyes. As she reacted, he smiled. “I hope you’re okay…”
“It’s okay!” Abby answered him, trying to forget that he didn’t believe in angels.
“Then let’s race to the ice cream store! Loser buys!” Young Saeng jumped over her and started running easily towards the store.
“Hey! It’s no fair! Stop right there!” Abby shouted and started running after him – pretty fast for a girl wearing flats.
“You’re fast!”
“You’re TOO fast! Slow down, these flats are killing me!”
“Catch me if you can!”
”You kid!”

They both reached the ice cream store panting heavily.

“You… Y-… You pay… This time… Waaah….” Young Saeng managed to say between gasping for air.
“As-…. Always… I…. I don’t have any…. Any money on… On me…”
“Why are you… Always… Broke… When it comes to… Money?”
“I’m not used to have… Money on me… Okay?”
“Get used to – next time you’re paying double!”
“Hey! I got first here! I shouldn’t be paying!”
“Hmph! I still want my mango ice cream…” Young Saeng glared at Abby.
“Fine, fine. I’ll pay you double tomorrow…”

Young Saeng smiled and headed towards the counter to order. Abby sat down at a nearby table, gazing out the window.

“Heeeere you go~” Young Saeng appeared at the table holding two cups of ice cream, as he put one of them in front of Abby.
“But but but but but but! This isn’t what we ordered!”
”Yes it is!”
“It’s too expensive!”
“You’re paying, after all!” Young Saeng shrugged.
“I was supposed to pay your mango ice cream twice! Not THIS!”
“Chill out, Abby.” Young Saeng laughed. “I’m paying.”
“Don’t start again…” Abby slapped her forehead.
“Oh really? You really wanna pay?”
”We’re gonna have a LONG discussion over who’s paying…”
“I’m paying and full stop! Now enjoy your ice cream. It’s gonna take some time.”

Abby looked at her luxuriant cup of ice cream. There were like dozens of flavors in that cup – plus syrup, wafers and fruit, like cherries, raspberries, oranges and, nonetheless, mango.

“What happened? You don’t like it?” Young Saeng broke the silence.
“Huh?” Abby answered with the spoon still in her mouth.
“You’ve been staying with that spoon in your mouth for a couple of minutes now…”
“Really?” she said without taking it out, and then blinked a couple of times.
“Y-... Yeah, really. Have you seen someone outside? You’ve been staring out the window.”
“I don’t know. I think I was just too lost in the flavor.”
“So I guess you like it.”
“Mhm!” Abby talked without taking the spoon out of her mouth.

Young Saeng laughed and returned to his ice cream.

“Abby…?”
”What?”
“What university have you finished?”
”Isanghan, why?”
”I finished that one too!”

Abby almost choked on her ice cream.

“Really? How nice! Why haven’t we met before, then?”
”Don’t know. What class were you?”
”Class 9, floor 2. First on the right.”
“Holy cheesecakes… We were in the same class?!”
“I think you’re wrong.” Abby raised her eyebrow.
“Floor 2. Class 9. Isanghan University. That’s my class as well. What the heck?!”
“We couldn’t have been in the same class!”
“Maybe we just didn’t see each other, I don’t know.”
”Speaking of which, there was this girl I didn’t really notice – I only know that she was pretty nerdy. She sent shivers through my spine only by looking at her.”
“Shivers in what sense?” Abby raised an eyebrow again.
“You pervert! I said “Nerdy”! Do I need to spell it too?”
“I was kidding! Hey! Wait… Is it … Oh my gosh.”
“What? Whaaaat?” Young Saeng asked really curiously.
“Oh my gosh! Oh gosh oh gosh!” Abby covered her mouth with her hands.
“What is it?”
“Y-… You’re… You’re my college crush. Oh my gosh!” Abby made up a fake fact.

Young Saeng’s mouth made the shape of an “O”. Saying that he was surprised is just a matter of fact. The only thing he could do was blush and scratch the back of his head, looking any other way but in Abby’s eyes.

“Well… Uhm… What can I say now… I’m… I’m flattered…”
“What can I say now?!” Abby stressed the word “I”. Even though it was a lie, she tried acting just as if it was totally true. Nice thing Young Saeng bit the bait. “Gosh… I’m so embarrassed right now…”

Young Saeng smiled and got up from his seat, approaching Abby. As he reached her place, he lowered to her level and hugged her.

“You can’t imagine how proud I feel, Abby.”
“I… I don’t know how to say it right now, I…”
“Not as if any words were necessary…”
“Young Saeng, I…”
“What…?”
“Y-… Young Saeng, your ice cream is almost melting!”

Young Saeng frowned a bit and then looked back, at his ice cream. True, it was about to melt. He sighed and then looked back at Abby.

“What a moment you chose to ruin!” he said joking, causing Abby to laugh along with him.

After they finished their ice creams, they decided to go at their own houses.

“That means we’ll see some other times…”
“Hit me a call when you can, okay?” Abby made the phone handsign to her ear.
“Of course. Take care!”
“Okay. Bye bye!”

Abby arrived at her house pretty soon. It wasn’t a long way from the location they parted. Again, she threw her backpack on the armchair, turned the TV on and sat at the desk. Opening a golden-covered diary, she started jotting down everything that happened:

“Dear Diary,

I know I’m starting really harsh. But Young Saeng is a dumass. He doesn’t believe in angels! Gah. What can I do to prove him we DO exist?! Gosh, he’s such a hardhead! I can’t just tell him “Like, you know… I’m an angel.”. He’ll think I some kind of psycho-maniac with this angel thing. Bah.

Anyway, I’m totally proud that my task here has finally started right – Young Saeng got admitted. He’s a designer, woopee! I hope I can be his secretary now. They said they’d send me their answer tomorrow. I’m so eager to find out. Being Young Saeng’s secretary would be one step forward in assuring him lifetime happiness. Fighting!

Also… There’s a slight little thing…

Today we went to eat ice cream again. Yay! Instead of the usual raspberry ice cream, he got a luxuriant rainbow ice cream for each of us. I don’t even know how I managed to finish that.

Side note: He hugged me! Gosh, his fragrance killed my senses… I love it!

Side not to side note: My heart almost pumped out of my chest. What the heck is happening?! I’m not allowed to love him! For St. Peter’s sake, I’m not even human! I mean… Well… Somehow…

I wanna meet him more often… Even though I’ve watched him grow up, I love him more as my child. Now seeing him a grown up man makes me think at his future. I want to assure him a sparkling future. It would be an Angel’s Cry if I wouldn’t succeed. I must succeed. I must.

I’m still wondering how would St. Peter react if he thought that I’d like Young Saeng.

I’m still wondering if I like him.

I’m still wondering how to make him believe in angels…

Side note: No chance to…

But... Oh well, I have to keep on fighting for Young Saeng. He's the reason I'm here, after all... Right?"
