Chapter 3

“First work day!” Young Saeng woke up, stretching.

He got out of bed and then ready to go to work. No sign from Abby yet.

“Maybe I’ll call her after I get back. BAH. Maybe not. She’ll think I’m some kind of stalker… Or suffocating person. So it’s out of the scheme.”

Young Saeng took his briefcase, full of sketches of clothes and jewelry and slammed it on the desk.

“Do I have everything?” he double checked his briefcase. “Oh gosh!” he slapped his forehead. After he sighed, Young Saeng got up and grabbed his pencil and eraser. “I was sure I had to forget something!”

Reaching the building where he was going to work, he stopped, then looked up.

“Isn’t it really high…” he spoke to himself, amazed.

He gulped and finally stepped into the building. After a few steps, he stopped in his track and sighed heavily, trying to gain some confidence.
The sound of the elevator arriving to the first floor made Young Saeng snap out of the trance. A couple of employees and models wandered in their directions, glaring at Young Saeng. Some of them actually whispered “Who the heck is this?”
He didn’t care about them. After getting his part of confidence, he stepped into the elevator and pressed the 4th button, leading to the floor where his office and workshop were supposed to be.
As the elevator beeped its arrival, Young Saeng was eager to find out his workplace – terra incognita for now. His body was trembling with excitement as he directed his steps towards the door that wrote “Heo Young Saeng” on it, with silver letters. He stopped right in front of it and felt joy overwhelm his heart.

“Home… At last!” he told to himself and pushed the door by its knob.

As he entered his office, he saw two desks – one of them was already full of paperwork, documents and briefcases. The first thought that shot through his mind was that he already has a secretary – total disappointment. He hoped for Abby to be his secretary.
By the moment he passed by the occupied desk, towards his, he felt a really familiar fragrance – tropical fruit and blossoms. He stopped.

Somebody entered the office – a girl wearing black high heels, black straight knee-length skirt, a white blouse, black jacket and glasses. Her hair was pulled up in a wavy ponytail, her fringe framing her delicate face. She held a cup of tea in her left hand. Young Saeng was literally stoned by her radiant beauty. As she managed to pull off a shy smile, he broke the silence, walking towards her.

“I’m so glad you got the job, Abby!”
“I’m glad too!” the smile on her face got wider. “Do you have any plans for today…” Abby pushed the glasses upper on her nose, “Boss?”

Young Saeng laughed at the way she called him. They were friends, after all. It was pretty awkward to know he has a girl friend as a subordinate.

“Shall I bring you some coffee?”
“I don’t need anything now, thanks.”
“At least you aren’t one of those bossy snobs… Boss!”

Young Saeng couldn’t help but chuckle at Abby’s joke intentions. He occupied the free desk and took out his rough sketches from the briefcase.
He liked having the things arranged – everything in its place. At least he knew where everything was and when someone wants something and he can’t go pick it for him, he just tells “It’s in the bottom right drawer!” and it’s no big deal. As for Abby, she can’t resist if all her things aren’t scattered all over the place – at least a small area, self-claimed for her own self. Egocentrism let its print. She can’t tell someone where something is. She’s the only one who knows. Abby is one erratic girl.

“Show me what you have there!” she popped her head from behind the huge tower of paperwork.
“Come here? I don’t think I’d take the risk of bringing my sketches to your desk…”
“Aw.” Abby pouted as she got up and went over to Young Saeng’s desk.
“What do you think?” he showed her a couple of rough sketches.
“Isn’t the collar a bit too floppy? I mean, all the laces here could miss. It looks okay without them too.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah. The lace at the edges makes it look a bit messy, I don’t know.”
“Probably… What about this one?”
”Long T-shirts?”
“Yeah…”
“Well, to be sincere… What does it write on it, I can’t see.”
“Shine On.”
”Doesn’t match…” Abby frowned. “Think for another quote?”
”I don’t know yet… I’ll bring it tomorrow fixed up. Okay?”
”Fine with me.”
“How about this dress?”
“You’re designing dresses too? Wow. Now that’s one nice and complete fashion line.”
“I also have jewelry!”
“Really? Show me, show me!”

Young Saeng felt a wave of pride shoot through his body. His decision turned in the last moment – instead of showing her a couple of rough, incomprehensible sketches, he preferred showing her something else.

“Wow! Oh gosh, Young Saeng, it’s so pretty!” Abby covered her mouth with her hands.
“You really like it?”
“Of course! Oh my, who wouldn’t, after all!”

Young Saeng scratched the back of his head. Even though it was obvious that any girl would like that piece of jewelry, his low confidence made him think that it’s not fit to be sold.
The piece of jewelry we’re talking about is a silver necklace. It isn’t thick, but more discrete. It held a delicate pendant in the shape of a star. The star had numerous carvings, each one of them holding a small Swarovski crystal. Even though it was small, it was enough for the rays of light to reflect into it, making it shine so beautifully, almost blinding. Abby was stunned, turning it from an angle to another.

“It’s so pretty!” she was spazzing around. “I wish I had something like this!”
“Don’t worry, as soon as I make a nicer one, it’ll be yours!”
“Really?” her eyes widen in amazement, as she’s just about to glomp Young Saeng. “Thanks! Thanks lots!”

Somebody else entered the room without being expected.

“My, my, Young Saeng… Welcome!”
“Nice to see you again… Boss.” Young Saeng bowed.
“Same here. Are you enjoying your new workplace?”
“Of course!” Young Saeng chuckled, looking at Abby.
“I think I know why… Girls nowadays…” Boss laughed ironically, poking Young Saeng’s waist with his elbow, suggestively.

Abby coughed.

“Now if you’ll please excuse me…” Boss made himself vanish through the door.

Abby and Young Saeng looked at each other and kept a moment of dead silence. Then they both burst into an incredibly mad, sick laughter, almost suffocating. After the atmosphere calmed down, Young Saeng managed to pull out a couple of coherent words.

“So I guess we’ll be working together from now on!”
“I’m okay with it…” Abby wiped away the laughter tears from her eyes.
“Shall we celebrate this?”
”Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
”No, I think we’re thinking the same thing!”
“Ice Cream!” Abby blurted.
“I thought of going for lunch.” Young Saeng’s face dropped.
“Are you really that hungry?”
“Nah, ice cream would keep it away. After work… Let’s go, okay?”

For a first work of day, nothing special happened. Everything went at its normal pace.

“Whew!” Abby mimicked wiping the sweat off her forehead. “That was hard!”
”It’s only the start…” Young Saeng chuckled.
“I enjoy being a secretary! Really!”

*ring ring*

“Wait a bit, Young Saeng, my phone’s ringing.” Abby grabbed her phone from underneath all the papers scattered on the desk and went in the restroom.

“Yes? Who is it?”
”It’s Pete.”
“Gosh, St. Peter! I thought we’d talk when I get home!”
“I was trying to make sure that everything’s alright. And I have something to tell you.”
”What is it?”
”Every time I-…”
“Mmkch… Kkkh….” Abby’s muscles started spazzing.
“Andres! Andres, are you still there?”

The angel left the human body again in its convulsions. Abby sighed heavily.

“Not again!”
“That’s what I wanted to tell you.”
“Huh?”
”Be sure to hear my calls. Both on the pocket watch and on any calling or communicating device you own. Every time I call you, it meant that in the next 3 or 5 minutes you’re gonna suffer a crisis.”
“Tch. Why does my body have to suffer of epilepsy? I’m getting sick of it!”
“Bare with it, it’s the only virgin one. You have to get used to these. They’ll be happening more often by month.”
“How much time do I have to stay on Earth?”
“Till Young Saeng’s life will be in its best stage.”
”St. Peter! St. Peter! How can I make him believe in angels? He’s so stubborn!”
“That’s not something you can change, I’m afraid. It’s his own point of view. Please don’t blame yourself for it. His childhood was too unfortunate so he could believe. Maybe he will, one day. But don’t tell him, okay?”
“Okay, St. Peter…” Abby sighed and reached to get back in the body.
“Wait, Andres.”
”What is it?”
“I’m starting to see some feelings. Are they true?”
“What kind of feelings?”
”Don’t get too comfortable around Young Saeng, okay? I don’t need any kind of trouble beyond the Heaven’s Gates.”
“But I don’t have any feelings for him!” Abby said that, unconscious of her answer.
“Just be sure you won’t be any kind of strong feeling you’d be developing for him.”
”I won’t be developing any kind of feelings for him, Gosh! I’m only his protector!”
“Fine then… Take care, Andres.”

Abby nodded as she hung up the phone. The body stopped its rough session of convulsions and was now breathing extremely heavily. The angel and body joined once again. Abby got up and straightened her clothes, then got out of the restroom.

“What took you so long?”
“Sorry. I was talking on the phone. It was-…”
“I’m not gonna ask who it was – I’m not that indiscrete.”
“Oh, okay then.”
“Shall we go now-… Wait…” Young Saeng tried looking more carefully at Abby.
“Huh? What is it?”
“Abby, why is your hair that ruffled?”
“It is?”
“Y-… Yeah… And you have some bruises on your left cheek – have you hit something? You didn’t have them beforehand.”

Abby remembered her epilepsy crisis, as the body was violently hitting everything it surrounded.

“They’re childhood bruises, silly!”
“They don’t look like… Are you sure you’re okay?”
”I’m okay!” Abby smiled. “Let’s go to the ice cream shop now!” she hurried, grabbing Young Saeng by his arm as she literally dragged him to the shop.
