Tiny drops of water were hitting against Abby’s umbrella as she made her way from the bus station to the main building where she worked. She was already 1h late.
It’s 10am. She burst into the office and apologized a hundred times for being late. Young Saeng didn’t notice her – or at least he pretended not to.
“Uhm, I said “Hello”.”
He didn’t bother answering – after all the love he was carrying her, he just received an arrow of disappointment shot right through his heart. He thought she didn’t deserve being answered to, so he just continued minding his own business.
“Fine, ignore me. You know this happened some time ago and what was afterwards.” Abby pretended not to be impressed by Young Saeng’s behavior and just went to her desk, starting her job.
“You’re late.”
”Do I look like I don’t know? I even apologized.”
Young Saeng sighed heavily. He couldn’t think of anything but the conversation he heart between Abby and “Pete”. He was still wondering about the “Angel’s Cry”. What the heck could that be, after all? He tried anything to brush the thoughts off his mind, but nothing would work. Starting some other sketches for clothes, repairing old sketches, but he just ended up crumpling the papers and throwing them away.
‘Where’s the shy Young Saeng I know?’ Abby thought. ‘He has changed radically since the day I met him. What happened to him? Are popularity and fame so severe for someone like him?’
Abby sighed. She went outside and brought a cup of tea, then returned to the office.
“Young Saeng…” she went to his desk.
He didn’t say anything – but just raised his looks to prove that he’s listening to her. Or at least pretend to.
“If there’s anything wrong, you know you can tell me.” she put the cup of tea on his desk.
“There’s nothing wrong, Abby. It never was.” He answered straightly. “Oh, and I don’t want tea.”
“It’s obvious there’s something wrong, Young Saeng!” Abby slammed her hands on his desk, almost shouting at him. “You’re behaving really weird! Has fame and popularity affected your way of thinking that much? Then you’d have better not been famous, you know?”
“I didn’t ask you anything!”
“I did. And you didn’t answer.”
“I said there’s nothing wrong, Abby. “
“Lies.”
“No you’re suspecting me of lying?” he got up angrily, looking straight into her eyes.
“You read my mind.”
“Fine then! Then I should have lied when I made that dress for you, right? Right! Right, Abby! I lied all this time!”
”Dress? For me? What dress are you talking about?!”
“Wasn’t it a bit OBVIOUS that the bride dress fit you perfectly?”
“Maybe it was just a coincidence.”
“Why did I show you that finished star pendant instead of showing you that rough sketch, huh? And I said that “As soon as I’ll make a better one, it’ll be yours.”?!”
[ Flashback ]
The piece of jewelry we’re talking about is a silver necklace. It isn’t thick, but more discrete. It held a delicate pendant in the shape of a star. The star had numerous carvings, each one of them holding a small Swarovski crystal. Even though it was small, it was enough for the rays of light to reflect into it, making it shine so beautifully, almost blinding. Abby was stunned, turning it from an angle to another.
“It’s so pretty!” she was spazzing around. “I wish I had something like this!”
“Don’t worry, as soon as I make a nicer one, it’ll be yours!”
“Really?” her eyes widen in amazement, as she’s just about to glomp Young Saeng. “Thanks! Thanks lots!”
[ End of Flashback ]
A shot of the conversation shot through her memory. It ached so much thinking of it.
“Whatever.” She waved her hand and returned to her desk.
“Don’t “Whatever” me like nothing happened, Abby.”
“You just said that nothing happened! So I should have no reason to be worried now, right?” Abby shouted.
“I can’t believe we’re arguing over such a stupid reason.”
“The reason isn’t stupid, Young Saeng. Stupid is the one who started it!”
“No, Abby! Stupid is the one who pours gas on the conflict!”
“Oh, so I’m stupid now, right?”
“After you made me stupid?”
“Fine. We’re both stupid. Not as if anyone would ever care.”
Young Saeng returned to his desk and started searching for something inside the drawers.
Abby ignored the loud sounds he made by slamming everything on his desk, the drawers and all the other stuff. Thus, she looked at him – he was searching for something.
Finally, he found it. It was a present. A small box wrapped beautifully in red silk, with a slight white ribbon to keep it in place. He unpacked it and took out a small note, then packed it back.
Young Saeng grabbed his jacket and held it on his left arm, in his right hand holding the box. He reached to leave, but as he passed by Abby’s desk, he threw the present in her lap.
“Talk about happy birthdays…”
“But it isn’t my birthday! And you can take it back.”
“I would have inquired a different reason, but now I can’t. Consider this a present for your birthday.”
“Where are you going? Work’s not over for today?”
“None of your concern. I’m leaving early.”
“Boss will kill you.”
“Why do you want to try looking like you care about my fate?”
”Because I really do, Young Saeng!”
”Believe me, after what we just discussed, you don’t look like you ever gave a damn, Abby.”
Young Saeng stormed out of the office, slamming the door behind him.
“What’s his problem now?! Why is he so irascible…? Have I done something wrong or what?!”
Abby put the present on the side of the desk and grabbed her diary. She opened it and started jotting down how much of a bastard Young Saeng was.
“He could have at least told me what was wrong!
Instead, he was just “Yeah, NOTHING!”
Then started shouting at me for no reason, like I’d be guilty for something.
I haven’t done anything wrong!
Gosh, isn’t he a hardhead.
Well, fine then. Since he doesn’t like me anymore, I think I finished my job here, on Earth. St. Peter is waiting for me at the Gates of Heaven now.
Beforehand, I’ll write a note to Young Saeng.
Farewell, Diary.
Andres.”
She grabbed a small piece of paper and wrote a farewell note to Young Saeng.
Work time was almost over by the time she finished. After knowing that her job was done, she finally grabbed the gift from Young Saeng and unpacked it. The silk was flowing easily through her hands, revealing a small jewelry box. As she opened it, her heart almost stopped. The reminiscence of the day when Young Saeng showed her the necklace and pendant shot again through her memory and as a bullet through her heart. It ached so much she was crying.
After pushing away her tears and thoughts, she was easily brushing her thumb over the star pendant – it was the same one as Young Saeng showed her the first time. She put it at her neck and felt again the love she once felt for Young Saeng. She felt like forgiving him for all the ruckus he caused that day.
“Huuuh… Still raining… Not fair. I’ll have to get the bus now. I can’t walk home.”
Indeed, it was still raining. But more heavily than before. Just as it hasn’t rained in a century and now the clouds have gathered all the water in the world to flood over this city. It was dark – only 5pm, but looked like night. Abby’s cellphone rang. It wasn’t St. Peter.
“Hello?”
”Uhm… Hey… It’s Young Saeng.”
“Oh. Hi. What’s up.” She was straight faced and a bit disappointed of the caller. But maybe she would have the chance to apologize – even if it wasn’t her fault directly in the conflict.
“Ehm… Can you talk right now…?”
”Yeah, I’m about to leave.”
“I… I’ve been thinking about it… I-… I don’t think it’s working between us…”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
”Y-… Y`know, just forget it, I gotta go, okay?” Young Saeng’s voice became really worried now.
“Huh?! Wait, no, let’s talk about it!”
“You never listen, do you?!” he shouted into the phone. “I SAID IT’S OVER!”
Abby was literally stunned. She dropped the phone from her hand. The only sound in the office was the beeping sound coming from the cellphone, as Young Saeng hung up. She almost fainted in her chair; tears were rolling down her cheeks as rivers. She was so angry right then, she tore up the farewell note she wrote to Young Saeng and wrote another one. She didn’t want to, but her tears stained the small paper. Abby didn’t even bother to close her diary or take it with her, but she burst out in the rain, running across the streets. She wanted to go home. It hurt too much.
“Why did it have to happen… At least we could have made it work!”
The rain was getting heavier by second. The sky was totally dark, just as if it was night. Abby was walking home, her body soaked from head to toes. She felt her knees weaken when she reached a railway. She had to pass over the rails.
Her phone rang. She took it in her hand and didn’t bother to see who it was. Abby threw the phone away, as it smashed to a piece of rail.
“Damn you, whoever you are!” she shouted, as she felt her muscles spazzing.
Abby didn’t know whether her muscles were spazzing because of too much crying or the other reason. To her disadvantage, it was “the other reason”.
She wanted to take a few more steps.
“Come on, not now…” she felt her crisis get closer. “A few more steps, come on…” but her body became uncontrollable and heavy like stone. She fell on the rails, tripping over the side of one.
Abby couldn’t move. Her crisis finally came around. The phone was still ringing.
The angel wouldn’t leave the body – she couldn’t get out of the puppet, but was totally conscious.
“What’s happening here?! I need to get out now! St. Peter, help me!” she tried mentally shouting after St. Peter so he could help her, but it was no chance to be heard.
A train was getting closer. Its flashing lights were trying to signal Abby to get off the rails, as the train’s speed was too high to be stopped soon. Abby saw the train getting closer, but her crisis didn’t allow her to move. She smiled as a flashback of all her Earth life shot through her mind. All those nice moments with Young Saeng, the first time eating ice cream, the feeling of loving someone, acknowledging that you helped someone getting higher than his own expectances… Abby just smiled. She smiled with all her heart, between all those tears she spilled for Young Saeng. She knew she loved him. She loved him purely; she risked the whole World for him. Maybe it was better for her to leave him. She closed her eyes and spilled one more tear; it turned into a pearl. It was her last tear before the train ran over her body.
Abby died. She died for Young Saeng. She died with a smile planted on her face. She died without a sin, her soul was still pure. The rain had nothing to wash away from the scene, except the immense stain of blood.
Saturday morning – free day. Young Saeng didn’t go to work. And that’s why he didn’t set his alarm clock.
Around 10 o’clock, Young Saeng was still sleeping, when the phone rang.
“Hello?” Young Saeng answered the phone.
“Mr. Heo? Sorry to disturb you this early.”
“Yes, it’s me. Whom am I talking to?”
”My name is Lee Won Su. I’m working at the Criminology department.”
“Uhm… What happened? Why are you calling me?”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Heo, we aren’t suspecting you of anything. I wanted to ask you if you know someone named Abigail Andres.”
“Yes… Yes, I know her.” Young Saeng sighed heavily hearing her name. But also, an arrow of worry shot through his gallery of feelings.
“We found her cellphone on the rails and she only had 2 numbers in it. One was yours and one was someone’s named “Pete”.”
“Sorry, to interrupt, but who’s Pete?”
“We don’t know, it says the number isn’t real.”
“Why did you call me? To come pick up the phone for her? Why haven’t you contacted her?”
“No, Mr. Heo. We called you to come and pick her body from the morgue.”
“Excuse me?” his knees weakened when he heard the word “morgue”. “I think I misunderstood. Can you repeat please?”
“If you know Miss Abigail Andres, please come and pick her body from the morgue.”
Young Saeng was stunned. He couldn’t say anything, but a series of severe palpitations shot through his body. He hung up.
“Body…? Morgue…? Abby? What’s the point?” he tried brushing off his thoughts – maybe it was just a play of his imagination. He turned on the TV, getting to the news channel.
“A young girl of about 21 years of age died last night in a train accident. At first, it was believed that she committed suicide, but after the necropsy, the legist doctors have proven that she suffered of epilepsy. One of her crisis happened when she was on her way home and it occurred the moment when she was passing through the Center Seoul Railway. The young girl was the secretary of the famous designer Heo Young Saeng-…”
The girl who presented the news continued blabbering about Abby’s death. Young Saeng couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Slowly but surely, he started becoming mentally unstable. He thought that it’s some kind of joke. He grabbed his jacket and went to the hospital, through the utter darkness and the icy rain that hasn’t stopped since the night before.
As he reached the hospital, he rushed to the reception, asking the nurse for indications towards the morgue.
“Thank you.” He bowed his head and ran to the elevator.
It just wouldn’t come. He punched the button and ran on the stairs. It was a long way until floor 9.
He slammed the door of the morgue, panting heavily. Inside, he saw the man who called, Lee Won Su.
“Mr. Heo?”
“Yes, yes it’s me.” He managed to say between his gasps for air.
“I’m sorry for what happened.” Mr. Lee bowed his head and got out of the room. “It must be a really hard loss for you.”
“Abby…” Young Saeng couldn’t say more.
“I-… I’m going to leave now. My condolences. Good day, Mr. Heo.” Mr. Lee left.
Young Saeng collapsed on his knees, rivers of tears flowing from his eyes.
“No… It-… It just… Can’t be… No, not my Abby!”
Young Saeng got up on his feet and rushed towards the stretcher. He got off the white cloth Abby’s body was covered with. After the severe shock the body received when the train hit it, the doctors managed to reconstitute it. Her eyes were closed. Her skin, paler than ever. Though, she still kept that angelic aura around her. She was as cold as ice.
He couldn’t control his tears. Young Saeng easily brushed his index finger along the lines of her face, her cheeks and her eyes.
“How much am I going to miss these… Abby, why? Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you just go along with it?! You knew so well we could have got over it… Together…”
A nurse came in the room.
“Um, I’m sorry. But we need to take the body away now…”
“Huh? I was called to take it.”
“You’re a relative?”
“… No.”
“Then who are you? Do you know her?”
”I’m… I’m her boyfriend.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. But… The doctors need to-…”
”I said no. You won’t take my Abby away from me…” the mental instability started to be visible.
“Mister, I understand your pain, but-…”
“I already said no! You can leave now!”
“I think I need some help here…” the nurse called a couple of other nurses to carry Young Saeng away so they could take Abby’s body.
“Take your hands off me! Stop it! Leave me alone!”
“Mister, please cooperate!” the nurses were desperately trying to take him out of the room.
“Abby… Abby just wait for me, I’m gonna be right there!” he reached his hand to try and touch Abby one last time, but the nurses just threw him out of the morgue, covered Abby’s body again and closed the door behind them.
