He could taste it.
He could feel it.
“Hero!” screamed Hebe, her voice cracking as she began crying. His body hurt from the beating up, his heart hurt from hearing Hebe’s cry.
“Shut up bitch!” ordered Gui Gui and smacked her across the face.
That was it, Hero thought. The next second he used all his strength and pounced on her, tearing a scream out of her. The men pulled Hero off and smashed him against the wall breaking his only unbroken arm. Hero closed his eyes in pain.
“Hero!” yelled Hebe once again, “Please tell me you’re alright!”
Gui Gui glared furiously at him and wiped his blood off her clothes. “Guys, hit him until he’s sorry!”
“No! Please don’t!” cried Hebe, struggling to get out of the men’s grip.
“Do it!” she yelled.
“But...his arms and legs are broken, if we take it any further, we’ll kill him...” explained one of her people.
Gui Gui walked up to him and smacked him across the face. “What did I hire you for? Don’t tell me this kind of rubbish. I don’t care! Do as I ask!”
The men lifted their polls and hammered against his flesh. Hero didn’t let any sound escape his lips, he’ll be damned if he apologised to this woman. All the time, his eyes were directed at Hebe seeing how she struggled and cried because of him.
“Hebe...I love you” he wanted to tell her. When life finally seemed so precious, he realised how important she was, that it was impossible to stop loving her, unbearable to see her in Aaron’s arms everyday...but it’s too late. Even if he didn’t want to let go, he doesn’t have a choice.
Suddenly the metal doors flew opened and the bright sunlight flew in. “Drop all your weapons!” yelled a voice. All the men dropped their polls and got pulled out of the place by the police with a Gui Gui screaming behind.
“Hebe!” Hero heard Aaron yell. At least before he leaves her, he’s sure someone will take care of her. He saw Aaron rush over to Hebe and hug her but surprisingly she pushed him away.
“Where’s Hero?” cried Hebe, tears streaming down her face as she detangled herself from Aaron. Aaron guided her towards Hero and she knelt down before him.
“Hero...” whispered Hebe, sliding her arms around him. She felt his blood and weak body. “You have to be alright...”
Hero coughed and squirmed in pain. “Where’s the doctors?” yelled Hebe.
“They’re not here yet, they are stuck in a huge traffic jam,” answered Aaron.
“Hero! You promised you’ll stay by my side. You can’t die...” mumbled Hebe, tears falling from her eyes.
“He...hebe...” gasped Hero painfully.
Hebe held onto him tighter.
“Ha...have...I...ever...tol...told...you, you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen?” Hero managed to say.
Hebe closed her eyes and panted trying to control her tears. “Don’t cry...please don’t. I don’t want to see the person I care about the most cry.”
Hebe shook her head and hugged him tighter. “I won’t cry if you stay with me.”
Hero smiled and looked at Aaron. “Aaron...promise me to never break her heart. Please.”
Aaron held onto his hand and smiled through his tears, “I promise...but you have to promise me to stay strong because you still owe me ten bucks.”
Hero’s tears slipped through his eyes as he coughed and choked.
“When I came to this world, everyone around me was smiling. I hope the day I leave this world; everyone around me will not be crying but smiling. Hebe...smile for me. One last time, let me see your smile.”
Hebe looked up from her tears and shook her head. “No...not one last time. You can’t leave me.”
“Please Hebe...” begged Hero.
“Hero....don’t do this to me!”
“Hebe...smile for me.”
Hebe squinted her eyes and cried. Her body shook with fear but she smiled.
“Thank you Hebe...” smiled Hero as he looked at her one last time before closing his eyes.
Hebe felt his body go limp and sobbed. “Hero...No Hero, wake up!” She shook his body but he gave no response.
“Hero!” cried Aaron clutching onto his best friend’s hand. They heard the arrival of the ambulance and the coming of the paramedics. They tried to get Hebe off him but she wouldn’t let him go.
“No! Go away!” screamed Hebe, hugging Hero’s body to her.
“Come on Hebe. Let Hero go” persuaded Aaron, pulling her away.
“No! I can’t let him go!” whimpered Hebe, “I’ll never let him go...”
“Hebe...” muttered Aaron, “Let him go. He’s never coming back even if you hug onto him forever.” The words felt painful. Aaron didn’t want to say it, but he had no choice.
Hebe went still and the paramedics placed Hero onto a ramp and left them alone. Aaron knelt down and wrapped his arms around Hebe’s body. “This is the truth. We have to accept it even if we don’t want to. Hero’s gone, he’ll never come back.”
“...why...” gasped Hebe as her body went limp.
“Hebe!” yelled Aaron shaking her. He picked her up and rushed out to the ambulance in panic.
-------
Hebe slowly opened her eyes and miraculously she saw light. She closed her eyes and opened them again. As quick as wind, she sat up and looked around the room.
She could see again.
“Hebe! You’re awake!” she heard a voice from the door.
“Aaron?” she asked when she was tightly wrapped in his embrace. They pulled apart.
“Where’s Hero? Didn’t he say we are going to eat ice cream today?” she asked. Aaron looked at her then looked downwards.
Hebe frowned and tried to remember what happened.
-FLASHBACK-
Closing his eyes, Hero’s stubbornness overcame his common sense. “All you can do is beat people up when they get what you want. I feel sorry for you because you don’t know the meaning of life, the meaning of love!” spat Hero. Gui Gui screamed and lifted her leg slamming it harshly onto his back.
Hero once again yelped in pain. “Hero! Don’t say anymore!” ordered Hebe who was still pulled up, against the wall, “Please don’t!” A sob escaped from her throat showing how much she was afraid of losing him. Hero smiled slightly and said, “You see what I mean, all you can do is hit people when they do things against your will”.
An evil laugh tore through the air and Gui Gui bent down lifting his face from the ground. “Have anyone ever told you that your mouth stinks? I think I can help you with that.”
Pulling Hero up from his hair, she turned the tap on from the nearby sink and shoved Hero’s face in. Gurgling and struggling against her grip, his face was soaked with the water. ‘What are you doing to him!” yelled Hebe, tears once again, threatening to fall from her eyes. The man on her left gave her another punch and she whimpered.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
-FLASHBACK-
“When I came to this world, everyone around me was smiling. I hope the day I leave this world; everyone will once again be smiling not crying.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
Hebe’s closed her eyes and clutched onto Aaron’s arm. “Why can I see now?”
“Hero...he passed away and you were the first in the waiting list for corneas. Hero’s corneas were transplanted to you.”
Hebe lifted her hands and touched her eye lids. “I have Hero’s eyes?”
Aaron smiled and replied, “Yes.”
Hebe’s eyes became watery. “Do you believe in sacrifices that turn into gifts?”
Aaron looked at her with confusion as she got up and walked towards the window.
“In order for me to see again, Hero’s life was sacrificed,” she explained and a sob escaped from her throat.
“Hebe, don’t think about it this way.”
“If I ever knew this was the sacrifice, I would’ve never prayed to see again. I’ll rather be blind for the rest of my life than see Hero leave me.”
“Hebe-”
“No, Aaron! Hero died because of me, because of us. He was sacrificed for our safety when he never did anything wrong.”
“What about us? We never did anything wrong!”
Hebe turned around and looked at Aaron with her watery eyes. “I did. I did so many things that were wrong and the consequences were forced upon people I care!”
With that, she dashed out the room before Aaron could say anymore.
“Hebe!” she heard Aaron yell behind her.
She couldn’t forgive herself for being the reason for Hero’s death. If she had just left Aaron alone, Gui Gui would never do such things to them. She hated herself, hated herself for making decisions where the consequences were set upon people who she loved.
Hebe ran out of the hospital and dodged passersby until she collided with a man near her age.
“Are you alright?” asked the man, helping her up from the ground.
“I’m sorry!” apologised Hebe until she saw he was scanning her up and down.
“You ran away from the hospital?”
Hebe looked away and the man smiled, “It’s alright, if you don’t want to mention about it I won’t force you to.”
Hebe nodded and started walking away from him until he pulled onto her arm scaring a gasp out of her. “Are you Hebe?” he asked making Hebe cock her head up.
She gave a slight nod and looked at him curiously. “Do I know you?”
The man shook his head, “You don’t, but you know Hero.”
“You know Hero?”
“Yes, he goes to the same dancing studio as me until what happened two days ago” he sighed, “It was a shock.”
Hebe felt guilty whenever someone talked about his death. She felt helpless.
“Sorry...” whispered Hebe. The man shook his head and laughed.
“Don’t be sorry. If Hero knows you had to say sorry to me, I bet he’ll kill me.”
Hebe frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I guess he never told you right?” he sighed, “This boy. He always thinks of others before himself which is the reason why he never gets what he wants.”
Hebe nodded in agreement as she remembered all the things he had done for her. Why did his life have to be so short?
“I’m Xiah! Do you mind following me? Hero still has his belongings in his locker and I guess you won’t mind keeping them right?”
Hebe shook her head and gave a small smile, “But you better not report me to the hospital.”
“Of course not!”
Guiding her towards the studio, Hebe found out it was really close to Aaron’s music studio. Why didn’t she ever find out he came here to practise? Was it because all this time, she had her full attention on Aaron?
“How did you know I was Hebe?” she asked Xiah.
“Oh! Haven’t you realised he has a photo of you and him in his wallet. You won’t believe how much he talks about you! Hero have been in this studio for a very long time and he never really talked about any girls until the day you appeared in college.”
Hebe blushed and replied, “We’re great friends.”
“Do you seriously have no idea what he feels for you?” he asked, stopping in front of Hero’s locker.
“Friends?”
Xiah shook his head and unlocked the locker, “find out for yourself,” then left her alone.
Hebe slowly opened the locker and gasped when she found a photo of her looking at the ocean stuck on the side. She looked at the side of the photo and found some writing.
“You look at the ocean in a way you look at him. You ask me why is love so painful. You ask me why you never get what you want but I want to tell you, sometimes the only thing you’re looking for, is the one thing you can’t see. When will you realise the love I have for you is no lesser than the love you have for him?”
Hebe covered her mouth in shock and shook her head, “He wouldn’t, he couldn’t...”
She turned her attention to the little booklet lying in the middle of the locker and picked it up to find it was Hero’s diary. She carefully flicked it open and read his writing. The first couple of pages were about the time when she had not met him yet. She carefully sat down and continued her reading.
“Dear Diary,
That stupid Aaron Yan! He actually forgot to put the food into a glass bowl before microwaving it. Now my microwave is ruined. He’s so paying for that!
Hero”
Hebe giggled and turned the page to find writing about the first time they met.
“Dear Diary,
Love at first sight? I never believed in that until today. Is love classified when you see someone and your heart beat increases? Does it mean you love someone if your mind is filled with images of them? Does it mean you love someone if every single word they say means a lot to you? If that’s love, I think I’ve fallen for Hebe Tian.
Hero”
-FLASHBACK-
“Why does the world have such harsh words, words that will stay in people’s hearts forever?” said Hebe breaking the quietness.
“Maybe Lord just wanted to test human beings, can they stand challenges” replied Hero to Hebe’s question.
“Well…I think he made a wrong choice because this did not become a test but just pain” answered Hebe.
“Life is full of pain and happiness, without pain happiness will not be happiness, Happiness will not exist”
“What if the pain took out all the happiness? Happiness will still not exist”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“Dear Diary,
Why did this world have to force things upon people? Why is this world so unfair, making some people go through things that others don’t need to. The most important thing is why did one of these people have to be you? I would have done anything to protect her from this experience but the problem is, I cannot do anything. I could not do anything before and I still cannot do anything to ease her pain. This helpless feeling, it's more painful than ten daggers stabbing you.
Hero”
-FLASHBACK-
Hero moved closer to Hebe and asked,” Do you mind sharing your past with me?”
“I…it’s a long story”
Hero held onto Hebe’s hands and said, “Tell me”
Hebe looked at Hero’s eyes and began telling her story.
“When I was little I had a very happy family….I thought my family was the best in the world and I treasured it a lot until…until…that woman came along! I thought my dad will change his mind later on so I kept it as a secret, no one knew I knew about this but he never did change. Everything went worse, mum and dad had a lot of arguments” continued Hebe.
Hero listened to Hebe’s story quietly.
“My dad treated my mum really badly, my mum knew all along my dad was cheating on her but she loved him so much she didn’t bear losing him”
Hebe started to cry…she tried forgetting those painful memories, when she thought about them she will start crying.
“The day…came….my…my…dad…left us with…with…that woman”
Hebe was shaking from her tears.
“My mum…became…really…really sick and…and passed…away when I was 13 years old”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“Dear Diary,
I thought I found her. I thought we had a chance but what I never thought of was obstacles. I never thought Hebe would fall for Aaron.
Hero”
-FLASHBACK-
Aaron stared at both of them with jealousy and anger.
He lowered his head facing the ground and said, “I’m sorry…I guess I’M the one BOTHERING YOU GUYS!”
“Aaron…it’s not the way you think,” said Hero.
“I never imagined you like that Hebe,” said Aaron and turned around walking away.
“AARON! NO IT’S NOT LIKE THAT! LISTEN TO ME!” Hebe rushed out of the house not even saying a good bye to Hero.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“Dear Diary,
He betrayed her, yelled at her but why does she still love him? Why can’t she ever see me when I’m just standing next to her? Why am I the one that she leans on when she’s in pain but never the one she clings onto between the two of us? Why is Aaron the only one that comes up to her mind? Why did it never occur to her that maybe I love her? Samuel Butler once said, “It is better to have loved and lost than to never have lost at all,” but why do I have a feeling I rather have never loved than to see myself losing in this game of love.
Hero”
-FLASHBACK-
Hebe did not give up; she still believed that Aaron will come.
Her hands were freezing cold, she kept breathing onto her hands to keep them warm. At last she couldn’t take it anymore and fell on the ground. Just when she was about to hit the ground a pair of warm arms held onto her and pulled her into his embrace,
“Aaron…Aaron…” mumbled Hebe.
The pair of arms carried her up and pulled her close to his body.
"Why do you have to torture yourself like this?”
This voice belonged to Hero, he carried her to the nearest hospital and the nurses gave her the correct treatment. The doctor wanted Hebe to stay in hospital for a night and Hebe begged Hero to stay with her which Hero agreed to.
“Who brought me to the hospital Hero?” asked Hebe.
“Er…I don’t know” answered Hero lying.
“Could it be Aaron?”
“Um….maybe…”
“But I don’t think so, he didn’t come”
Hebe looked down disappointed.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“Dear Diary,
It’s never fair; it’ll never be fair as long as she’s in love with Aaron.
Hero”
Hebe closed her eyes as she closed the diary, tears trickling down her pale face. She never expected Hero to be in love with her nor did she ever expect to read such breathtaking things, especially with Hero’s eyes. The first things she read with his eyes were things that Hero wanted to tell her but never had the courage to. He was right; she never paid attention to the people around her. All her attention was directed to Aaron, only Aaron. Now when she wants to turn back, she doesn’t have the chance to because someone who treasures her more than she does herself is gone, has left her forever. Those warm arms that were always there when she needed them, that smile which was painted on his beautiful face when she needed courage and those hands which caressed her face when she cried has all vanished, started a journey which she will never be able to catch up with.
“I miss you Hero, I really do,” cried Hebe.

Author's Note:
Don't kill me. I beg you, do not kill me. I know it's absolutely unbearable that Hero died but that's how the story goes. Yeah, I was heartbroken too when I wrote this chapter. It's unfair to him, very unfair. I guess you guys didn't expect him to die aye? No one really thought or mentioned about that possibility in the comments. I know it's painful but do you think you can still manage to comment?? xPP
Comments please and the next chapter will come. By the way, I had this typed up two days ago along with my other story but I didn't have the time to upload it. Sorry about that. 2 months, very long I know but this chapter is long! It balanced up the long wait right? Well, maybe not but hope you comment!
Thankyou for the readers who commented for Chapter 38.
