Afraid that her reaction had offended her Sunbae, GaEul lied, yet tried to make it sound convincing.
“Ah, Sunbae ah… it wasn’t THAT bad… I just… er… ah… er… had post-partum morning sickness,” she made up.
YiJung lifted his head to look at her and raised an eyebrow at her. He was once again reminded about how bad GaEul was at lying. Post-natal morning sickness? Are you kidding me?
“Aniyo, GaEul, I tasted it. It was terrible. We were just wondering about what we should do to all these wasted food.” JiHoo replied, slightly touched that she had considered his feelings and had tried to comfort him even though it was so easy to tell that she was lying.
Just then, JiHan jerked his head up and broke into a huge smile, like he suddenly had a Eureka moment, which he actually did.
“Well,” he started. “We could do … … this!” As he said the word “this”, he grabbed a fistful of octopus from the Nakji Bokkeum dish in front of him and smashed it onto HanYoung’s clean cheek.
Everyone was taken aback and stood rooted to the spot, staring at JiHan and a dirty HanYoung and did nothing else.
“YAH! GU JIHAN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!” HanYoung screeched when she finally registered what he had done. “I’LL GET YOU FOR THIS!”
At precisely that instant when she finished speaking the last word, she grabbed a fistful of Kimchi Bokgeumbap and dumped it on his head.
JiHan merely giggled and threw the bulgogi at her.
“Y-you two, what are you doing??” GaEul asked, not believing what she just saw her daughter do. She brought her up to be a gracious young lady. That was not the act of a gracious young lady!
JanDi also stared bugged-eyed at her son. She brought her son up to be a gentleman and had even refused to let JunPyo get in the way when she was punishing him. Gentlemen don’t smear octopuses on young girls’ faces or throw pieces of beef at them!
“Yah!” HanYoung screamed as she threw the Kimchi at him. Unfortunately, somehow, he had ducked and the Kimchi went flying straight onto JunPyo’s face.
She let out a gasp.
“Ajusshi! Mianhae!” HanYoung apologized.
JunPyo looked at HanYoung, shocked. He then looked at JiHan angrily. He then turned to face JanDi with a smirk on his face.
“G-Gu JunP-Pyo… What are you trying to d-do?” JanDi stammered as she took a stepbackwards.
Grabbing a fistful of Japchae, he threw it at JanDi, at the same time, announcing a “FOOD FIGHT!!”
GaEul and JanDi let out a scream and ducked for cover while the Japchae went right smack onto WooBin’s face.
“Mwo!?!” He yelled.
“GuJunPyo, you’re on! YiJung, help me!” he demanded and YiJung actually went to help him, grabbing a Sundae and squishing it into mush with his hands then threw it at JunPyo which missed him and went ‘splat’ onto Grandpa Yoon’s shirt.
“Oh no!” YiJung thought as he made to bow and apologize to the old man.
Yet before he could do so, some Janggeo-gui came flying towards him and he ducked it, resulting in JiHoo’s sleeve having a stain the shape of a piece of broiled eel. When they looked to see the source, YiJung and JiHoo stared with their mouths agape. Holding a fistful of shepherds’ pie and aiming it at them was Grandpa Yoon who was laughing along with HyingWoo. Somehow, seeing the children throw food at each other and giggling and laughing as though they were not upset with each other earlier had triggered the memory of a food fight Grandpa Yoon himself had started and had been involved in in his younger days when he was still in school.
“Haraboji! You’re gonna get it!” JiHoo yelled as he threw the bulgogi at him.
So, to and fro, to and fro, the food flew, from one end of the dining room to the other, sometimes meeting its target, sometimes hitting other people and other times going “splat” onto the finely polished wooden floor, walls and sometimes, even the ceiling.
The four richest men in Korea were yelling running around the huge room like some hyperactive kids, throwing food of different colours at each other and occasionally targeting the sole elderly in the room, though never once did the food they threw hit his head. Accompanying them where two young kids, running all over the place. Sometimes they aimed at each other and at other times, took sides with their fathers and targeted the “opposition”, the people whom their fathers told them to throw food at. Sometimes it was JiHoo, sometimes it was WooBin and at other times, it was either YiJung in JiHan’s case or JunPyo, in HanYoung’s case. Occasionally, it would be Grandpa Yoon.
GaEul and JanDi made a fort around themselves using the tall dining chairs and hid behind it, not wanting to get involved in the fight in any way. Yet, when she was behind the chair, GaEul snuck a look at the food fight which was ongoing and spotted her beloved young son bouncing alone in his highchair and vulnerable to the impact of the food which were flying around fast and furious.
Fearing for her son’s safety, GaEul braved the flying ammunition and headed towards HyungWoo, ignoring JanDi’s cries to return to base. As she made her way towards HyungWoo, she ducked all the flying food as best as she could, yet some still found their mark and had hit her on both sides. She could still tolerate it as she focused on getting her squealing and squirming son out of his highchair. Yet, somehow, a piece of tomato found its way to her cheek and it stuck there with the result that YiJung roared in laughter at how dirty she looked like with stains all over her shirt and a tomato on her cheek. Unable to resist, GaEul picked her son up, held him in a protective embrace and then using one hand, threw 2 fistful of shepherds’ pie at her husband. Both shots made their mark. With a huge smile and a scream of delight, she then hurried back to base even before YiJung could throw something at her.
At base, JanDi fussed over HyungWoo and worked hard to clean GaEul’s shirt using all the pieces of tissues that she had brought herself while grumbling at how immature F4 was. GaEul just laughed at the fun they were having and attended to her son. The fight on the other side of the chairs was still ongoing.
Just then, the phone rang. Leaving the others to continue their fight, JiHoo made his way towards the phone and picked it up.
“Yeobsoyeo,” he started while he attempted to flick the pieces of meat off his face.
At precisely that moment, a huge yellow retriever had bounded into the dining room, knocked the phone off JiHoo’s hand and had knocked JiHoo on the ground and began to lick his face. After a while though, the dog started to cough and vomit on the ground as JiHoo hurriedly shuffled away.
The food fight stopped as everyone turned to look at the dog. Whose was it?
“OH MY GOD!!!!” a voice screamed. Everyone turned their heads to look at the source, even HyungWoo.
A young lady who looked no more than 28 years old was standing at the door with one hand holding her heaving chest, looking shocked and staring at the mess in the room and at her dog which was busy vomiting. Dressed in a simple white frock and wearing baby blue flats and a white cap, the girl looked angelic, frail and helpless. She looked weak physically yet strong and determined in another way. She had an air of innocence.
Walking towards the dog and subsequently, JiHoo, she bowed over and over again as she kept repeating “Mianhae, mianhae”.
“I’msosorrymydogbargedinlikethatandmadeamesshere,I-” the girl started but was stopped by JiHoo.
“Relax, could you speak slowly?” JiHoo asked as he looked into her large brown eyes which were brimming with tears. Somehow, he couldn’t look away from her even when she lowered her head and hid the brown eyes away from his view.
“I-I’m so sorry my dog barged in like that and made a m-mess here,” she stammered. “I’m sorry, I will clean up all of this mess, including the stains on the ceiling, floor and walls. I will compensate you for whatever damage he has done, I-”
JiHoo cut her off again. “Why’d you have to scrub all these away?”
“Didn’t my dog create this mess?” she asked him, looking in to his eyes again.
JunPyo roared in laughter and the children fell over giggling. The rest just smiled at her while JiHoo shook his head. Grandpa Yoon cocked his head to one side and looked at the girl thoughtfully.
