Chapter 25

Finding the kids

“JiHan! JiHan ah!!” JanDi screamed and dashed from her spot at the door leading to JiHan’s room to JiHan’s bed. Her heartbeat stopped for a second when she found the room empty and curtains billowing in the open window and thought of the worst.

The worst was confirmed when she pulled away the covers. JiHan was not in his room. He had run away.

“JunPyo! Gu JunPyo!! JiHan’s gone! He’s not at home!” JanDi yelled as she busted the door to her and JunPyo’s room open.

JunPyo, who usually slept like a log and refused to wake up any time before 10 am on a Sunday continued to mumble in his sleep until what JanDi had said registered in his mind. It was then that he jerked up from his position to face JanDi with his eyes wide open and his jaw hanging.

“BWOH!?! JIHAN’S GONE!?!” he shouted.

“Yeh! Our son’s missing! He’s not at home! He’s gone! He ran away!!” JanDi answered. By now, she was feeling very worried, even more worried than the time JunPyo was being trashed by JaeHa and his cronies. JanDi was pacing all over the room, biting her lower lip and continuously scratching her head or fiddling with her fingers.

“JanDi, change, now,” he ordered. JanDi complied without a single complaint.

JunPyo jumped out of bed and got dressed within a minute. He then pressed the intercom’s button and ordered the butler to gather everyone – maids, man-servants, gardeners, cooks and anyone else who worked in the mansion in the hall.

In the toilet, JanDi cried silently. She cursed herself for leaving her son alone last night despite him feeling so bad and sad.

“Guem JanDi, pull your self together. Crying does nothing,” JanDi told herself and pulled herself together. Even though she felt like calling GaEul, she stopped herself, reminding herself that GaEul herself had a missing child to find.

“Yobo, I want to go too,” GaEul pulled YiJung’s hand and gave a little smile.

YiJung leant over and gently moved the few loose strands of hair covering her face away to look her properly. She looked extremely tired, her cheeks had stains of the tears from yesterday and her eyes were red and puffy from crying for so long. He remembered clearly how she could not go to sleep last night, even when he’d hugged her through the night and assured her that they would find HanYoung today.

“Yobo?” YiJung asked GaEul and smiled weakly. “You never call me that unless you want something. No GaEul, you’re not going. I’m going to find HanYoung with WooBin and JiHoo.”

Earlier that morning, YiJung had straightened out his thinking while flipping through the newspapers, where each page had a picture of a smiling HanYoung and advertised a 100000000KRW reward for anyone who could find her. Yeah, his best friend was responsible for losing his daughter, yet he too was at fault. He himself had not taught his daughter to listen to instructions well and they together had partially spoilt her. Furthermore, who was the one who accompanied him through those dark days, when he was destroying himself and when GaEul ran away and brought up divorce? It wasn’t JiHoo or JunPyo. It was WooBin. When they were much younger too, who was the one who always knew him best other than his own governor? Again, it wasn’t JiHoo or JunPyo. It was WooBin. YiJung realized that he could not stay mad at WooBin for long. He was what men would call their ‘best-bud’ or ‘bro’. He couldn’t stay mad at someone whom he’d know all his life for long. So he decided to accept WooBin’s help along with JiHoo’s. After all, if more people tried. The chances of HanYoung being found would be much higher.

“Yobo… Please…” GaEul whined.

“No,” YiJung firmly replied and pushed her back onto their bed and tucked her in.

“Stay and sleep or I won’t let you know when I’ve found HanYoung,” YiJung said when GaEul showed signs of retorting and not listening.

“Now split up into groups of 2 or 3 and go find JiHan. Don’t come back until you find him. Whoever finds him will get a 10000000 KRW reward. Now move!” JunPyo ordered with JanDi looking worried on his right and his mother looking grim on his left. JunPyo’s father was on his wheelchair in front of JunPyo. He was expressionless. Earlier that morning, when JunPyo and JanDi had just announced that JiHan was missing, Madam Kang had let out a short scream before recomposing herself while Master Gu almost fainted.

“JanDi, let’s go. Omma, Appa, we’re going off to find JiHan.” JunPyo gave a slight bow in the direction of his parents while JanDi gave a full bow before following JunPyo into a limousine headed for the TV station.
