(While in the first year of marriage:_
------------------------------------------------------
“Weeeeeeeeeehhhhhh!!! I can’t! I can’t! Get out!” GaEul’s screech rang out from her room and through the hallway into YiJung’s ears along with the sound of things being thrown around the room.
“GaEul! GaEul! Calm down!” came Mrs Chu’s shouts.
YiJung’s eyes widened as a maid flew out from the entrance of the room and saw him.
“Young master, Young mistress, she… she…” the poor maid stuttered.
“Okay, okay,” YiJung replied as he rushed into his room, or rather, their room. It was utterly ruined. The bed sheets were completely pulled off the bed and flung all over the room, over the lamps, the end tables and anything else that was below it before it came to rest. GaEul’s bottles of perfume and other makeup stuff lay on the ground with its contents spilling out. Their wardrobe was trashed and his own clothes, including underwear, lay some one meter away in a huge lump. Standing in the middle of it was an 8-month pregnant GaEul who was attempting to trash their wedding picture and beside her was her own mother who was trying to stop her daughter from destroying anything else.
“YiJung ah! What did you do?!” YiJung’s mother-in-law shrilled when she saw him enter the almost demolished room.
“What did I do!?! I just came back home!” YiJung replied feeling wrongly accused as he walked towards his agitated wife.
“Stay away! I don’t want to see you! Go away! *Sob* Why did I ever marry you?” GaEul screamed at him and took several steps behind.
“Huh!?!” YiJung asked, bewildered as he stopped walking towards her when he realized that she didn’t want to be near him.
Suddenly, GaEul’s mother smacked his arm repeatedly for no apparent reason.
“You stupid boy! What have you done to my GaEul? Why is she like this? I handed her to you just barely a year ago and this is what she becomes? What did you do!?!” GaEul’s mother scolded YiJung.
“What did I do? I didn’t do anything! This is the first time I’ve seen her like that!” YiJung replied as he dodged the beatings.
“Omma! Don’t talk to him! He was a player! No! He must still be! Because I’m now so fat and ugly, he must have gone to some other women! Omma, I want to go home!” GaEul screamed.
“Huh?! What in the world gave her that idea?” YiJung thought to himself and stared bugged eyed at GaEul who was now attempting to break the picture frame in her hands.
“What??” Mrs Chu asked, first staring at GaEul then glared at YiJung.
“Ani, ani, ani yo, Eomeonim! There’s no such thing!” YiJung defended himself as he waved his arms.
“Then why have you been coming home late these few days?! You must have been sleeping with some other women!” GaEul screamed at him again.
“GaEul! What are you talking about?! I just have more work to do these few days because of the upcoming exhibition!” YiJung explained desperately.
“I don’t believe you!” GaEul replied as she launched into a fresh new wave of tears.
“GaEul,” YiJung said as he walked towards her, ignoring the fact that she was backing away. He just walked faster so that he’d reach her. Mrs Chu just stared at them and wondered how her son-in-law would calm her daughter even when she, the mother who’d known her ever since she was born, could not. Prying her fingers away from their wedding photo, YiJung then moved to GaEul’s side and hugged her from the side, even when she struggled to get free, so as to be able to hold her close despite her 8 month old huge bulge.
YiJung rested his chin on the top of her head as he soothed his wife.
“Shh… Shh… Shh… Shh…” he attempted to calm her, his right arm wrapped tight around her waist and imprisoning her while his left caressed her cheek and wiped the tears away from them.
“Yah, why are you thinking these sorts of things? You’re not ugly. You’re beautiful! Haven’t you heard the saying that mothers-to-be are the most beautiful? Now, why would I want to see those other sleazy women when my wife here is so beautiful and cute? Hmm? Yobo ah, I love you. Why would I hurt you? Hmm?” YiJung whispered sweet nothings into GaEul’s ear, soothing and calming her. He tried to give her the sense of security she wanted.
He knew that the past eight months had not been easy for her. It had not been easy for him either. Seeing her puke every morning, seeing her cringe in pain whenever her calf muscles cramped up, hearing her groan every few minutes because her lower back kept hurting and seeing her wake up repeatedly these few months because she needed to use the toilet pained him immensely. Perhaps it shouldn’t even be a surprise that she would suddenly have such an outburst, seeing how she couldn’t do anything the past two months, giving her ample time to let her thoughts wander and the different horrible hormones that were raging inside her.
GaEul burst onto tears again upon hearing those words and sobbed uncontrollably into YiJung’s chest.
“Don’t leave me,” GaEul sobbed as she wrapped her arms around her husband tightly.
“Silly girl, who’s going to leave you,” YiJung held her head closer to him and kissed the top of her head, allowing her to cry to her heart’s content.
“Sheesh, GaEul. To think that I’m the one who gave birth to you,” Mrs Chu thought to herself as she stood rooted to her spot and looked upon the two who had already forgotten her presence.
