Thank you, brother. *COMPLETED

Chapter 1

His Sacrification.

Our parents died long ago. They left me with nothing except for dust, debts and an unknown piece of letter. I was questioning myself, why did I get the letter but not Jonghyun hyung? He is the eldest, after all. The atmosphere was lacking of everything. I presumed that we’ve been cheated by our relatives, saying that our parents owed them money and never paid them. We had to give our house and properties to them.

And the unknown piece of letter? Jonghyun hyung told me never to open them.

As I laid on the hospital bed, I flickered my eyes and was afraid to move. I stared blankly at the ceiling.

Jonghyun hyung?

I overheard his conversation earlier with the doctor. My eyes were swollen as how much my heart was bleeding. I couldn’t find more way to speak up, nor did I try.

[Flashback]

“Kim Jonghyun, your brother has a weak heart.” Jonghyun kept his head facing to the ground while receiving the news from the doctor. He peered inside Key’s room and gulped hardly.

“What shall I do?” The doctor patted his back and rubbed it. He gave the sad impression to Jonghyun, wanting him to accept the reality.

“You will have to let Key get adopted.”

“But-” Jonghyun hardened his fists. Key was the only possession that he has. The only family he owns. And the only Key to help him survive the situation. Jonghyun was deep in thought. He titled his head to the other side and touched the ward’s small peeking window. “Key is my brother. It’s hard for me to let him go.”

“Key needs the operation, Jonghyun.” The doctor pressured him in giving Key up for his own sake. “He is too weak.”

Jonghyun shook his head, he bent down and went to his knees. “Please doctor, please do the operation for my brother. I will do anything to pay the cost later. Please help him.” His pride was washed away as he begged for Key’s operation. But it didn’t matter; all he thought about was to get Key into his normal, happy self again.

“I’m sorry, but we must have an agreement. You’re too young, Jonghyun. You cant expect to pay me after 10 years.“ The doctor slipped away but Jonghyun quickly grabbed his leg.

“Please. Just for this one time. I will work very hard. I will give the money to you in a year.” Jonghyun didn’t realize that he was crying along with his plea. He landed his foreword on the top of the ground, “Please, I’ve grown up with Key for almost all my lifetime. He grew in front of my with pride, we played together and never parted. Do you think I have the heart to let Key get adopted?”

The doctor stayed mute. He faked a cough and asked Jonghyun to get up from his knees. “Okay, I will do the operation for him. But you must promise me the money or I will have to take him.”

“Thank you doctor.”

Key couldn’t stand it any longer and cried. The tears that dripped on the hospital pillow, gave him a remembrance that he wont forget.

“Thank you,” He mumbled inaudibly before closing his eyes to rest.

[End of flashback]

“Are you feeling better now?” Jonghyun asked with his hand resting on his own lap. I nodded and got up to sit on the bed. I was having a massive headache, probably because of the operation I just had.

Jonghyun made me rest more and told me that I’ll be getting out soon. But I couldn’t let him involve in this situation alone.

“How about the operation cost? How come they operated me when we haven’t paid?” I asked with the look of curiousity. Jonghyun’s face turned pale and he was speechless. Just until his lips was moving to tell something.

“We will get it paid soon, Key. You don’t have to worry.”

But how can I not worry?

“Jonghyun, make sure your brother wont do heavy works that can lead him to feel fatigue.” The doctor advised and jotted down some more precautions for Jonghyun to take care of. Jonghyun gave a slight nod before pushing my wheelchair away.

We didn’t talk for a while, Jonghyun hyung stopped in front of the hospital’s cafeteria and bought me some food. I gave him a surprised look, “Where did you get the money to buy this?”

“I found a job. That should be good to pay off the debts.” He mumbled silently behind my ears. I reckoned that something was not right even though Jonghyun hyung said that it’s only one, simple part-time job. Being frank, it’s not that I wouldn’t allow him to find money, it’s just that I feel awkward enough to let him work hard to earn money for our living. While I can only watch in in terror and disappointment.

“I wish I can help you.”

“You can, just get better soon and get more rest.” He ruffled my hair and smiled.

He smiled.

I’ve always wanted to know, was he smiling because he didn’t want me to worry, or the smile was pure and sincere? I was confused, and trapped in my own thoughts.

The last day of summer, 2002.

“How is Key?”

“Emm, he’s doing great. I think he’s gotten much stronger and healthier.” Jonghyun said to the end of the line. He squeezed the phone hard and his facial expression changed with every words they exchanged. Key titled up his head to see his brother who seemed to struggle a bit.

“When will you be able to pay Key’s operation fees?”

“soon.”

“well, I hope you’ll stick to your promise or you know what’s going to happen.”

“I understand.”

Autumn, 2002.

“Where’s the money?” A group of people barged in our little home and gestured wildly at Jonghyun hyung. I stared at them in disbelief and made my way to Jonghyun’s side.

“I said I will pay you guys soon!” Jonghyun shouted at them but it wasn’t changing for good. The group of guys punched Jonghyun with a fast swift.

“Yah! Why are you doing this?” I pushed the guy who just punched hyung but he pushed me, letting me slipped and hit the wall on my head.

“Do not do that to him.” As I shook my head lightly to get off the pain, Jonghyun oppa shoved them off and attacked them. “He’s sick. I’m not going to forgive you if anything happen to him!”

“Hyung-ah…” I called to stop them; but it was too unreachable.

“So this is the little buddy that you’re paying for?” He reached me and pulled me by the collar. Jonghyun came to release his grip from me but the others pulled him back and started kicking him.

“Stop. What are you doing?! STOP!” I roamed at them; finally succeeded in letting myself go.

“If you can’t pay us, we will take this little buddy of yours.”

“NO!” Jonghyun punched the guy on his face and he drew out blood. But his blood was not enough compared to Jonghyun hyung’s.

“Then we will have to finish you.”

It happened in a sudden. They kicked and tortured Jonghyun in front of me. Everytime I tried to thrust in, Jonghyun hyung will shout at me to stay out of it. I didn’t understand why.

Who were those guys.

What do they want.

Why did they want to take me away?

What was their relationship with us?

One more kick on his head, he knocked half-unconscious on the floor. They all left us when they thought Jonghyun was dead. His blood was spluttering everywhere; and it left no sign of brightness. His eyes were swollen and he looked like a vampire who had just finished sucking blood of its prey. His face was all covered with the ugly crimson red.

I crawled to him.

“Jonghyun!!” I shook his body vigorously, I supported his head with my hand and asked him again, “Can you hear me?”

He nodded and gave out his hand. I held them closely and told him to wait while I try to get someone to help him.

He opposed. Instead, he pulled out a little envelope from his pocket and gave it to me.

“Key, life is too short. So while you’re at it, do your best. And most important, sacrifice for the one you love the most; so you wont leave with regrets.”

“What are you talking about? Stop saying that, you’re going to be fine. I’m calling the ambulance.”

“Key,” He reached my hand and stopped me,. He told me to sit back and listen to what he was going to say. “It’s useless if you call the ambulance now. I wont have much time.”

“Then why are you insisting on not calling the ambulance?”

He ignored and mumbled silently; he sounded like he was whispering…

“Key, smile… Because it is priceless.”

I smiled. So did Jonghyun. And he inhaled his last breath and closed his eyes

And I knew it was forever.

“Smile; because it is priceless.”

I smiled again, but my heart was aching badly. I wanted to cry but I restrained myself. Not in front of Jonghyun, not in front of him. He wanted to see me smile.

One thing I regret the most was…

I didn’t get the chance to thank him.

Winter, 2002

I cleared off the dust from the box and noticed a familiar envelope. I took it out and unsealed it. It was the letter that Jonghyun hyung told me not to open. It was not from my parents; it was actually from him. Reading it in a melancholic tone..

The letter says…
