“Onni, are you sure you can handle little Tim all by yourself?” Kelly was not convinced that Chae Yeon can be up to the job.
“I’m sure I can handle him, don’t you know I have a way with young boys?” She joked with her assistant.
“Okay, call me if there’s anything, my exams ends at 5!” The mother of the boy flagged a cab and got in.
To Chae Yeon, It felt very nice to be back in Seattle, the city, the memory that lies within it. She carried Tim to the café opposite her hotel to get some caffeine to tackle her afternoon with the little rascal.
“Mummy, can I have that cookie?” Tim pointed at the large display of cakes and pastries
“Tim dear, not every woman is mummy, I’m Aunty Yeonie, not Mummy, and there is only one mummy, which is Omma.”
Tim is a dashing looking boy, he goes around calling all the females Mummy, but calls Kelly Omma. That afternoon, they walked around town, Chae Yeon loves buying clothes for Tim. She feels that everything looks good on him, and once he grows a little older, she will get him to go into modelling.
Just as she was waiting for the store assistant to bring out a set of Mickey Mouse pyjamas, she realized that Tim was no longer beside her.
Tim loves playing with his Auntie Yeonie. He likes it when she buys candies for him, but more so, he loves it when he manages to trick her in his little pranks. It was easy to trick his Auntie Yeonie.
He hid outside the store looking at her busy browsing through the new arrivals section, but soon got attracted to the display of model aeroplanes at the opposite store.
(In the toy store)
“Are you lost?” A stranger who was also Korean picked Tim up.
“I’m not lost, I’m just wandering around because mummy is busy shopping” Tim found the stranger familiar. He remember seeing him somewhere.
“Oppa, I’ve got the model I needed for my boyfriend, thanks for bringing me here” Michelle, now a university student came up to the stranger
“But where is your mummy?” The stranger looked around the store but didn’t find any one that would resemble this boy’s mother.
“There she is!” Tim pointed to a frantic lady running out of the opposite kids apparel boutique.
The stranger was stunned. He carried Tim out of the toy store and walked towards her direction.
“Chae Yeon Onni!” Michelle helped in trying to get her attention.
Chae Yeon turned around and saw Tim. She was so happy to have found him. But she looked up and realized that the man carrying Tim is Lee Seung gi.
Her Seung gi, from 5 years ago.
The Seung gi that left the entertainment industry to serve the army.
Tthe Seung gi that disappeared from her life.
The Seung gi that was recently named Korea’s most eligible bachelor.
“Mummy! Lets go to that toy store” Tim stretched out his arms waiting for his Auntie Yeonie to carry him over.
Chae Yeon carried Tim over and put him on his feet.
“Don’t wander about on your own again, promise?” she kneeled down beside the boy and tried to get his promise.
“Thank you for bringing him over” She stood up and smiled to Seung gi and Michelle.
They make a matching couple, she thought to herself
“How are you?” Seung gi finally managed a sentence
He looked at the adorable little boy, and looked at the woman he loved so deeply. She still looked the same, his little woman. She still had long brown hair, it was like these 5 years never went past. It was like they were both back in Seattle where they lived at Orchard Ville.
But she now has a kid. He didn’t know she was married, none of his assistants told him about it. He asked himself, has she finally found her happiness?
“I’m good, thank you. It was nice to see you, but we should get going” Chae Yeon held on to Tim’s hand.
“Tim, say goodbye to Hyung and Nuna”
“Bye bye” Tim waved happily and hugged on to Chae Yeon’s hands.
Tim finally remembered, that Hyung is the man in Auntie Yeonie’s purse. Tim loves ransacking his Auntie Yeonie’s purse. Her purse had lots of stuff in it, chocolates and candies, along with many receipts and parking fines. But there was also a picture of her and this man. He liked the smile that Auntie Yeonie had in the picture. He felt that it was the happiest smile ever.
“Mummy, why are you crying?” Tim looked up and noticed that Auntie Yeonie is tearing as they headed back to the hotel, passing by a few other boutiques which she usually enters.
“I didn’t know Onni is married, she even have a child that big?” Michelle looked at Seung gi, who couldn’t take his eyes off Tim and Chae Yeon.
“How old do you think the boy is?” Seung gi asked Michelle
“About 3 or 4? He looks bright, Chae Yeon Onni must love him a lot”
“Who is his dad? I should have known if she got married” Seung gi muttered
***
That evening , Seung gi arrived at the Olympic hotel, where Chae Yeon was staying. He sat at the lobby in his dashing suit. A toy aeroplane in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other. He didn’t arrange to meet her. He just appeared hoping that she’ll turn up. He waited for 4 hours, till she finally appeared. She was alone.
“Are you staying here as well?” She asked
“I came to find you. I need to talk to you” He found his tone a little harsh. All these years without her, he buried himself in work, building up his family empire and completing his studies at the same time. He is a very strict worker and hardly ever smiles. For the first time, he felt that he should not use this tone on someone.
They went to a quite corner in the restaurant.
“Have you eaten?” She asked him. He looked like he has been waiting for a long time.
“When did you get married?” He looked at the woman across the table. He wanted so badly to pull her into his arms.
She used to be his woman, the woman who loved to drink soju
The woman who he sang a duet with
The woman who he took care off when she was ill
The woman who lost her memory
The woman who didn’t know anything but that she loves him
The woman who cooks and bakes for him
The woman who could not sleep without him
The woman he gave a ring to
The only woman he truly loved
It was 5 years ago, he is still unable to let go.
“I’m not married” She guessed as much he would think Tim is her son. After all, he did call her Mummy in front of him. But to her, it does not matter if he misunderstood.
He already has Michelle by his side.
He didn’t know what to do. 5 years ago, he promised himself that once she found her happiness, he will let go. He came to the hotel this evening because he wanted to hear from her personally, that she is indeed happy and well. Then maybe he will be able to let go. But now, everything was not going the way he pictured. She’s not married, but she has a son?
“Congratulations!, I read that you have been named Korea’s most eligible bachelor. My Dongseng is so capable” She smiled and tapped his hand. She wanted to liven up the conversation that was soon turning into a starring session.
“I will take care of you and Tim. I will treat Tim just like I would to my own child”
“What?”
“Please, will you marry me? I love you, I always have and I always will. I will be a good husband and a good father” He pleaded
Chae Yeon sat there in awe. She wanted to cry, because she was touched by his words, but she also wanted to laugh, because it felt so ridiculous. She wanted to scream at him, for his silliness, she wanted to throw herself into his arms, her Seung gi’s arms, and hug him tightly.
He held her hands, those tiny and icy hands that he used to hold to sleep every night. He is now a real man. He is no longer that 21 year old boy who is unfit to take care of her. He can give her everything and anything she needs. He can give her a real home, and be a father to her child, as long as she gives him a chance.
That summer, I attended my boss’s wedding. It was a depressing day for half the staff in the company, because our Boss, Korea’s most eligible bachelor, married his first love. The wedding was held in a beautiful cottage, which according to office rumours, was previously their love nest.
