Chapter 11: The Search

Thursday, 27th June 2002

Jessica and Michelle left Raymond who fell asleep after his injection.

“Do you have time for a drink?” Jessica asked.

“Sure…”

They stepped into Just Cool that was quite empty at this hour of the day except for a man at a far end table.

“Mich… I’ve been trying to ask you but you were kinda occupied…” Jessica started.

“You want to ask about… Louis?” Michelle guessed.

Jessica nodded. “I’m sorry to bother you at this time, but I… I just can’t get that jerk out of my mind!”

Michelle nodded sympathetically. “Actually Louis just appeared out of nowhere, and then he was already gone while I was crying over Raymond…”

“We didn’t really have that much of contact… I didn’t have the chance to ask him anything…” Michelle continued seeing Jessica’s face falling in disappointment.

“I’m just wondering what kind of man he really is… I still don’t want to believe he’s… Am I being foolish?” Jessica asked Michelle.

“Love is blind; otherwise it wouldn’t be love…” Michelle chose her words with care.

“To think of all the men I have to choose from, why’d I fall for a guy like him…? The first time I nursed him, I… couldn’t help being attracted to his vulnerability,” she said staring out of the window by their seat.

“Don’t judge books by its cover; give yourself a chance to get to know him…” Michelle suggested sipping her glass of juice.

Sunday, 30th June 2002, 11:00pm

Jessica sipped her fourth glass of bitter brew for the night, but she stayed as alert. Her eyes darted into the crowds scanning hopefully for the figure she had in mind. She had waited since 8, but till now, her search was in vain.

I won’t give up… Jessica harshly reminded herself. She had returned empty handed for the past three nights in a row. But somehow tonight, she had the feeling she would not be disappointed.

“Hey beauty? How come you’re lonely?” A man in his late 40s with the most revolting face approached her.

“I’m not interested for any company,” she said simply brushing the man’s patting hand off wrathfully.

“Hey, hey… I don’t bite you know…” he snuggled closer, his hands snaked back to her waist.

“Hands off!” Michelle ordered commandingly to the man.

His hand retracted immediately. He waved his index finger at her a good few times nodding his recognition of her highly regarded lawyer reputation.

Jessica turned, “Hey, what are you doing here?”

“What are you doing here?” Michelle questioned her in return.

Jessica sipped her drink in reply.

“Jess, that man appears out of nowhere and disappears like the wind. Sitting here drinking every night won’t help you know… I personally don’t think he’s that easy to be met…” Michelle added thoughtfully.

Jessica shrugged but continued drinking. A man brushed by, his wallet falling out of his pocket. Michelle picked it up for him, her eyes catching a familiar figure as she bent.

She threw the wallet back to the man and dragged Jessica along.

“What..?” Jessica was astounded by Michelle’s sudden tugging.

“I saw him… he’s leaving…” Michelle panted out her words as she ran. Jessica began picking up her pace too.

The dark figure in front was too fast for them. By the time they had reached the junction they had totally lost sight of him.

“You saw him?” Jessica asked excitedly.

“Yeah, no... I mean… I saw his friend…” Michelle said. “But we could track him back from there…”

Jessica’s excitement died down a bit.

She screamed in frustration pulling her hair. “What am I doing?!! I’m tailing after a dangerous cold blooded man who may not even have any feelings or emotion… let alone to be interested in me!”

Niki was rushing to her next case, but her stomach was rumbling ferociously. A bakery caught her eyes as she was running towards the court. Still debating with her drumming stomach, she finally gave in and made a dash across the road to grab a sandwich.

A car screeched to halt just when the bumper was less than an inch away from Niki.

“Are you blind?! Crossing the road like a maniac!” he scolded Niki and speeded off.

Niki apologized and heaved a sigh of relief. Looking at her wrist watch, she gave up her lunch and turned back towards the court at once. Her stomach felt a slight sour gastric pain stinging, but she bit her lips as she entered the court that was already starting.

*******************

Niki stepped out of the courtroom in a daze. She felt so weak and her gastric was not helping. Reporters were crowding her taking her photos.

“How do you feel about winning another case again?”

“How many cases have you won in a row?”

“Are you taking over your best friend Michelle’s title as the Legendary Lawyer?”

Niki shunned away the flashing cameras, the lights were blinding her. She suddenly felt exceptionally cold and weak and everything around her started whirling, as she collapsed in a heap before the ever excited reporters. A figure who had been watching her from a distant, smiling gladly at her success, rushed forward frantically.

Niki fluttered her eyes open. Someone was standing before her with the back facing but she felt too weak and lazy to strain her eyes to recognize the figure.

“I’m hungreeeee….” she moaned.

She sniffed the air that filled with a very appetizing aroma of chicken porridge. A spoon filled with porridge cooled to just the right warmth touched her lips as Niki opened her mouth childishly.

“Mmm...” Niki felt so good as the porridge gradually warmed her empty stomach. Nice…

“More… more... mum-mum…” Niki gaped open her mouth wide for more. Her eyes still shut, enjoying the pampering she was receiving from her friend.

The person feeding her was cackling away, and Niki’s eyes sprang open when she heard that it was not Michelle’s voice.

“Mi… you?!” Niki was taken aback to find Kevin’s smug face in place of Michelle’s.

“Is that how you thank you benefactor?” Kevin asked.

“You sent me here?” Niki not believing Kevin actually had a heart.

“I not only sent you here, I even bought you Hong Kong’s best tasting chicken porridge. FYI, it was as far as a two hours taxi ride from this hospital in the jam, but well I ran there and got back just as you stirred,” Kevin pointed to the rest of the porridge still packed in the polystyrene take away.

“I must be dreaming…” Niki pinched her right cheek. “Ouch…”

Niki’s stomach gave another growl. Niki patted her abdomen embarrassed by its ‘rudeness’.

Kevin chuckled at her cute reaction. “Stomach don’t answer to that you know, it answers to this!” He held out the bowl of porridge in his hands.

“I’ll feed myself. Thanks you can go now…” Niki tried taking the bowl from him but he jumped back.

“Tsk... tsk… such poor manners. No thank you and no please…” Kevin teased her.

“Are you bullying a sick person here?” Niki demanded pouncing at Kevin who was jumping even further away.

“Niki?!” Michelle burst into her room anxiously. Her eyes shifted from Niki to Kevin who was feeding her intimately by the bedside.

“Mich!” Niki whined pointing at Kevin. “He’s bullying me…”

Kevin’s eyes bulged in disbelief. “Objection! I… I’m so framed here. Defending lawyer, please do justice to my case here. My fate depends wholly on your wisdom!”

Niki laughed at Kevin who tried to bring the manner of speaking in court.

“See, I’m so not appreciated despite my porridge and efforts of cheering you up!” Kevin sulked.

“Ow, you’re so cute when you do that…” Niki teased.

“Hmmm... Did I come at the wrong time…?” Michelle wondered aloud.

“No you did not! Help me kidnap that bowl of porridge, he’s blackmailing me with it!” Niki cried indignantly.

Michelle couldn’t help laughing at the two childish friends of hers and decided to leave them both to settle the matter out themselves.

Michelle stepped out of the hospital. Gosh, I feel like I’m practically living here…

Of late, she has been going to the hospital at least twice a day to visit Raymond. Her lips unconsciously drew a sheepish smile as her mind wandered to Raymond and the times they’ve been spending together. She would never have thought that Raymond’s humorous and immature nature that once was her reason that she would never be interested in him was now actually what attracted her.

While her mind continued wondering the fact, her eyes caught the sight of the back figure that was unmistakably Louis’.

Louis! She lighted up. She darted after him, but the crowd and his fast walking pace distanced their gap. Nevertheless, her eyes stayed focus on his figure while she chased after him.

He took a turn into a deserted alley, and Michelle trailed after.

She was about to call out to him when she saw a few other men appeared before him. They were talking in a low voice as their hands stealthily exchanged something within their palms. The other men turned to leave towards the other direction while Louis turned back. Michelle appeared out of her hiding and Louis looked surprised to see her.

“Mich?!” he hurriedly slipped whatever he had just obtained into his pocket.

“What were you doing?” she asked bluntly.

“I… nothing Mich… you didn’t see anything,” he retorted.

“Fine, I didn’t. Just be careful with what you do… You don’t want to end up having no way out when you face the death penalty,” Michelle said.

Louis gulped back a cold feeling in his throat but appeared calm. He brushed past her walking away. “Mind your own business!”

“Jessica wants to see you…” she said, her words stopped him in his track.

“I… I have no reason to see her…” Louis stuttered fighting back his actual intention.

“Really?” Michelle turned over to face him. “I thought… your face looked very interested when I mentioned her name.”

Michelle trusted her instinct about this man once and she trusted it this time again. The flicker of emotion in his eyes was no different than Jessica’s when she was waiting for him in the bar.

“I… I’m sorry for her…” he said curtly.

“So, you do know she likes you?” Michelle guessed.

“She’s a beautiful woman, she can easily find a better man than a rascal like me,” Louis added.

“Do you like her?” Michelle asked again, and his jaw gapped at her straightforwardness.

“It doesn’t matter…” he said taking a step forward to escape her further interrogation.

“Of course it does… Mr. Louis Koo Tin Lok,” Michelle said smiling fishing out a piece of crumpled sheet from her pocket.

The man halted and spun around looking at her, his eyes filled with shock.
