Chapter 14: The Suspicion

Ron flipped open the file in on his table.

“Leila!” he hollered.

“Yes Sir!” Leila banged his door open and saluted. The door banged on the wall so hard that it rebound, hitting Leila’s jutting elbow.

“Ouch!” Leila squirmed in pain, rubbing her elbow.

“Useless silly goose…” Ron said heartlessly at her little accident.

Leila held on to her elbow and shot him a glare. Jerk… I can’t believe I actually admire this cold blooded jerk…

“Get me all the files with the information regarding Mo’s we’ve collected thus far…” he ordered. Leila stuck her tongue out at her boss who was too busy reading his file to notice her disrespectful act. She went out searching the file from the documentation room.

*Knock* *Knock*

Ron looked up. “Inspector Kevin…,” he stood up to invite his superior for a sit.

“How many times have I told you to just call me Kev,” Kevin patted on Ron’s back like old pals.

“You’re still my superior here… but I won’t give you much face when we leave after office hours,” Ron punched his shoulders playfully.

“How’s Mo’s case going?” Kevin asked.

“Still dim.” He replied frankly.

Kevin nodded. “I’ve got something to show you…”

Ron took the stack of photos from Kevin. “From your subordinates tailing your suspect?” Kevin nodded again.

Ron’s eyes widened as he flipped through the photos of Michelle and Louis who seemed to be making a deal at a deserted alley.

“This… she can’t be…” Ron stared at Kevin as if expecting him to crack that it was a joke.

Kevin sighed frustrated. “Don’t you think I wish it was a fake too?”

Ron narrowed his eyes at him. “Are you using Niki…?”

“NO! And that’s the worst thing. I’m not looking forward to crack this case…” Kevin groaned.

“Then why don’t you take Michelle for questioning?” Ron asked.

“I… I don’t want to have them suspect anything yet. Michelle is a very proficient lawyer. I’m sure she was involved in that Raymond case too…” Kevin voiced his suspicion.

“I’m sure the judge released Raymond solely because of that sheet of Michelle. The rest of the hearing didn’t sound very convincing to me. She had no strong points to win. I don’t know what she’s got in that mind of hers but I don’t want them to find some loopholes in the law and slip away…” he added.

Ron nodded in agreement. “Yeah, Raymond’s hearing is quite fishy. I didn’t expect them to win. But I still don’t want to believe Michelle’s a crook in the Mo’s”

“You never know. Mo’s got enough followers in the dark, he needs some in the light too…” Kevin said thoughtfully.

Ron screwed his forehead in disbelief.

“Are you into her Ron?” Kevin asked eyeing his buddy suspiciously.

“Me? No… no… she’s got a boyfriend too… that prince and princess thing I read on magazine…” Ron refuted quickly.

“Well glad to hear that… Otherwise that’d make two of us in the same boat… Only I don’t think they’re as ‘prince and princess’ as they appear… looks are very deceiving huh… Good thing Niki’s not involved…” Kevin said some more.

Leila reappeared with files piling higher than herself. She made her way clumsily before dropping the pile messily all over the floor of Ron’s office.

“Again? Leila can’t you work a bit more diligently?” Ron sighed exasperated at his subordinate who always seemed to be making silly mistakes.

Leila murmured some vicious remark inaudibly before slamming the files down in a clutter on Ron’s desk and storming out.

That’s how you appreciate me… she fumed kicking the air furiously, not noticing that she had accidentally dropped a small sheet of paper during the fall and her kick had coincidentally kicked it out of Ron’s office, sending it slipping under the rubbish basket by a bench.

“Hie, Michelle…” Ron surprised that she had came to the station. “Come in please.”

Michelle smiled. “Thank you.”

“What made you come over? Any troubles lately?” Ron asked.

“No… actually I wanted to ask you something regarding Mo’s case.” She said.

Ron’s alert pricked up. “Are you working on it? Who are you representing? Surely not Mo?”

Michelle laughed. “No… No… I… I’ve a friend in need. Just interested to know who has been handling this case before. I come to know that you’re relatively new…”

“It’s no wonder you’re a legend. Your sources are very accurate.” Ron spoke cautiously.

“You’re right. I’ve only been handed this case recently but I’ve no idea who was handling it before because the officer who passed this case to me wasn’t the one involved.” Ron was determined not to reveal any information to her.

“I see…” Michelle sunk deeply into her thoughts.

“Is there anything else you want to ask?” Ron disrupted her.

“Oh, no... sorry for bothering and thank you,” Michelle thanked him politely as Ron opened the door for her.

Ron closed the door after her, wondering what tricks she has up her sleeves. As much as he dreaded it, he was beginning to suspect her involvement with Mo’s.

Michelle bent to throw her piece of tissue into the wastepaper basket when she accidentally knocked it over, spilling all the contents.

Great… I’ve come for nothing and now I’m picking up rubbish… she thought in frustration as she bent over to clean the mess. Good thing it’s all just paper….

She was clasping her hand together to brush off the dust and putting the basket upright again when her eyes caught a blue sheet of paper. She picked it and was about to toss it into the bin until she caught the few lines of words on it.

Smiling, she congratulated herself. I’ve got what I wanted after all…

“I’ve got what you want…,” Michelle held out the parchment she collected from the police station.

Louis made a grab for it, but she was quicker at retracting. “Our deal?”

“You’ve got it…” he grunted.

Michelle smiled triumphantly and tossed him her find. “So long you remember…”

She turned away, but Louis called after her. “You’d better be careful not to drag me down if anything happens…”

She gave a cold laugh and strode away.
