Chapter 17: The Wedding

Michelle took her position before the huge grand entrance outside the church holding her small bouquet of flower. She gazed through the white veil swaying gently before her. The piano began singing the marriage hymn from within. Michelle felt her heart beat quickened, her hands worked nervously to smooth her gown.

The flower girls around her began stepping forward escorting her when the church door creaked opened slowly, revealing the seas of crowd inside. All heads and eyes were focused on her. Murmurs spread throughout the crowd as they all gasped, enchanted by her beauty.

There were much more people than she had expected. She gulped nervously looking at Raymond who was waiting at the end of the aisle. He smiled ecstatically at her. She returned him a feeble smile from behind her veil. The hymn continued echoing heavenly throughout the church.

I’m getting married… I can’t believe I’m actually getting married… and to Raymond Lam, the guy I’ve rejected countless times in the past…

Her mind flashed back to the first time where they met at Oxford’s orientation for international students. Another segment where Raymond had confessed his feelings; another where he presented the swans and diamond ring… All her memories with Raymond flashed through her mind in one go.

All these are happening too fast… Have I made the right choice? Raymond… What are we doing…? We’re moving way too fast for my brain to absorb… I…

About a million questions that never popped in her head ran through her mind during that few eternal seconds she walked down towards Raymond. And before she realized it, Raymond was already clasping his hand over hers, and she naturally hooked her left arm into his.

The father’s words were pouring out but Michelle could hardly hear them. All she heard was the debate from her own heart.

It’s too late to back out now… This is a once in a lifetime marriage… It’s too late to consider if this decision is right or wrong… You love him and that’s all you need to know… Do you love him? That was the most troubling question the voice within her had asked her… Of course I do… Of course I do… I love Raymond… He’s the only one I love…

“Mich?” Raymond whispered, shaking her out of her dreams.

“It’s your turn to say ‘I do’,” he said worriedly at Michelle’s blank expression.

The priest before them repeated his words.

“Do you, Michelle Yip take Raymond Lam as your soul partner, to be together whether you’re young, beautiful, rich, old, sick or poor…”

Michelle looked at the waiting priest and heaved a small sigh before opening her mouth.

“I…” She didn’t have the chance to finish her vow when a troupe of police swarmed fiercely into the church.

Michelle turned in shock, glancing frantically at Raymond. Kevin was leading the army and was marching down the aisle towards them. Niki stood up, calling after him but he did not hear. He showed them his ID although they knew each other.

“Mr. Raymond Lam Fung,” Kevin said in a grim voice. “You are under arrest for being the prime suspect in a case involving Mo’s.”

“Wh… what? What are you talking about Kevin?” Michelle’s voice pitched in angst.

Kevin’s cold face seemed to regain some recognition for his two friends.

He heaved a sigh, before reluctantly rephrasing his words, “Ray’s charged with murder Mich…”

Michelle gasped, feeling faint and dropped her ball of flower to the ground without realizing. She staggered backwards, but both Kevin and Raymond caught her arms.

“Mich…” Raymond cried. Kevin looked guiltily at his girlfriend’s best friend.

“What are you doing Kevin Cheng?!” Niki shrieked running forward to her friend’s aid.

“It’s not like I have a say Niki! I…” Kevin stared helplessly at his glaring girlfriend.

Ron and Leila looked apologetic but stepped forward to cuff Raymond who was dumbfounded. They were about to take him away, but Raymond shrugged off their escort abruptly.

“Wait…” Raymond pleaded. He looked at Michelle’s ghostly pale face. “Can… can we have just a few more minutes to finish our wedding ceremony?”

Kevin looked at the couple who had yet exchanged their rings. He finally nodded. The rest of the crowd stepped back to allow the couple some space. The priest repeated his words for Michelle for the third time.

This time, without hesitation, she blurted “I do.”

Slowly, Raymond slipped a ring into her wedding finger. The ring seemed made for her as it fitted nicely and glittered ceaselessly on its owner’s finger. Michelle gazed at Raymond’s painful expression on his handsome dark face while slipping his ring in. The sight of the cuffs on his hands was a sore to her eyes.

“I now pronounced you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride…” the priest announced, but no one cheered or clapped.

Raymond picked up the veil revealing Michelle’s tear stained face. Her tears had been streaming from the moment she said ‘I do’. Raymond’s heart ached seeing the sorrow in her eyes. He closed his own to hold back the tears threatening to spill and lowered his head and gave Michelle one last passionate kiss, where their tears spilled anyway, blending together wetting both their faces. Their hold were so fast, Kevin turned away, not having the heart to watch, and then ordered his other man to take Raymond away.

The audiences present were all touched to tears seeing the two newly wed couples struggling for another second together. It was the most heartrending wedding they’ve ever attended and will remain the only one they’ll ever witness.

Raymond was pulled away into the police van parked right outside the church’s main entrance. Michelle picked up her gown and ran after her groom.

“Ray…!” she cried one last time watching her husband disappearing into the vehicle. Her head felt heavy and she felt overcame with a daze, her surrounding whirled faster and faster, before she lost her balance entirely, collapsing into a heap at the entrance.

Niki and Vicki cowered over her anxiously shaking her. Alec quickly dialed for an ambulance. The police vehicle had already sped away with their alarm blaring while Raymond fought it to yell out his anguish from within when he saw Michelle’s breakdown. The wedding that had started out so serenely was now chaotic where crowds from within poured out to see the groom taken away while the bride lay unconscious on the steps.
