Chapter 2: Their Fateful ‘Accident’

“Okay…” Michelle gave Niki the tell-me-what’s-going-on look after they both managed to heave the heavy man, who happened to be still alive onto their sofa.

“Listen…” Niki began when the cuckoo in their living room clock cuckooed nine loud times turning Niki’s hushed words into a sharp piercing shriek.

“Iiiaaaahhh! My client’s going to have me minced!!!” Niki dashed out without another word, leaving Michelle gaped helplessly at the bleeding man before her.

“Damn!” Niki cursed as she steered her sleek Hyundai Sonata Elite, the shared graduation gift from her family members, into the parking lots of the Hong Kong Royal Court.

There must be some major cases hearing for the parking lot to be so full. Niki cruised her car around anxiously. She was definitely going to be late.

Just as she was about to give up hope and opted illegal parking, she spotted a hidden corner where there was a space remained.

Yes! Niki steered her car around and reversed in full speed into the space that she had perfectly angled her car at. Her car fitted nicely into the space and she jumped out, bumping her head carelessly on the roof of the car.

“Ouch!” she cried, then hastily broke into a small run towards the entrance to the court. She was so nervous about her first case that she did not hear a guy behind her cursing loudly at her.

“Ha, ha, ha…” Niki laughed gleefully to herself as she walked towards her car after winning the hearing beautifully.

Throwing up her keys in the air and catching it again, Niki was still busy congratulating herself until she bumped into a figure that stood between her and her car. Niki looked as though she just noticed his presence for the first time though the man had obviously stood there watching her silly laughs and key catching skills since she had stepped into the parking lots.

“Er… Excuse me?” Niki said uncertainly at the man who stared at her with a funny expression. The man remained glued to his spot, his arm crossed across his chest. His face wore an impatient look.

“Excuse me? Is that what you say for doing this?” the guy finally took apart his crossed arms, pointing to a long thin scratch outlining the side of a shining convertible parked nearby.

“Ow, what a pity, it’s such a beautiful car!” Niki exclaimed at the otherwise perfectly new car. She walked over to marvel the spotless silver Mercedes Benz SL500.

“Wow, this is so cool! I thought I’d only see this in my dreams!” she exclaimed excitedly scanning the inners of the car.

“Excuse me, Miss Trying-to-Act-Blur, YOU added that beautiful scratch on my brand new car!” the guy added, annoyance pitching in his voice.

“Me? Huh, no way! Do I look stupid to you? I’ve just finished my case, I haven’t even entered my…” Niki brushed away his accuse casually, still very impressed by the car before her. The guy walked over to her impatiently and pulled her by the hand to witness a scratch on her car as well.

“AHhhh!” Niki screamed in shock seeing her new car scratched as well and bent over to examine.

“No way!” Niki not believing a hideous line marked visibly by the side of her car.

“Yes way, and you did it this morning. I’ve waited a total of 3 hours for you,” the man spat angrily at her.

“Huh, hey how can you just say it’s my fault? What if it’s your fault?” Niki stammered uncertainly still very much affected by the line on her car.

The man’s eyes widened in disbelief. This girl was actually accusing him after his 3 long hours of long wait?!

“Okay… okay…,” he seem to have found his voice at last. He took out his phone to dial the police hotline. Niki did not notice his report to the police as she continued harping over the line on her treasured car.

A police car soon arrived to judge the person at fault. The man nodded to the officer twice. The police officer was exasperated when he saw it was such a minor accident.

“Hey, don’t you people have better things to do? Can’t you settle this small matter among yourselves?” a police officer whose tag read Ron exclaimed, eyeing the man questioningly.

“No, I can’t because this lady here won’t admit her fault!” he pointed accusingly at Niki.

“Hey, watch what you’re saying, I’m a lawyer you know,” Niki began proudly. “I can sue you for false accusation of faults I didn’t commit!”

“So what if you’re a lawyer! Lawyer my ass!” the man was angrier by the second.

“Ohh, cool down both of you…” a lady officer said as she came from behind Ron.

“Officer Leila Tong, take out the measuring tape to judge whose fault this is!” Ron ordered impatiently, disgusted by the two immature grown ups before him.

“Yes Sir,” Leila scampered back to the police car and fished out a measuring tape and soon was busy poring over the ground measuring with deep lines screwed between her forehead.

“So it’s her fault right?” the man said impatiently as Leila moved around with her measuring tape.

“Leila!” Ron summoned.

“Yes Sir! Reporting back to Officer Ng! After my measurement, indeed the vehicle number JC-309 is at fault Sir!” Leila reported her findings.

Niki pouted but admitted her lost.

“So do you want us to tow back your cars and lodge an official report and spend half a day questioning what happened here?” Ron asked sneeringly.

Both the car owners looked frantic at the word ‘tow’ as they both treasured their cars more than their lives.

“NO!” they shouted out simultaneously.

“Hmmphh..” Ron snorted angrily, marching back to his car with Leila behind him. “What a waste of police resources…”

“Sorry…,” Niki apologized sincerely to the fuming man before her, though she thought she caught him smiled a little at Ron who winked.

“Hie, I’m Niki Chow,” she held out her hand smiling sweetly, hoping to resolve the matter soon.

“Sorry? You’ve wasted more than 4 hours of my time, you’re the most troublesome woman I’ve ever met!” he growled angrily, not bothering to take her hand.

“Sorry, I was in a rush this morning, I didn’t notice you… So how would you like to me to compensate you?” Niki asked meekly.

“Give me your name card, you will be hearing from my insurance company,” the man demanded.

“Is there such a need for the insurance?” Niki asked surprised, looking at the line that doesn’t seem so visible after all, but nevertheless handed him her name card.

The man stormed into his car without another word, started his car and screeched out of the parking lot leaving Niki behind.

Niki stared until he was out of sight before getting into her own car, suddenly remembering the man she had left Michelle with this morning and quickly stepped on the gas pedal.

Patience will do it... This story is now all warmed up... Stay tuned! :D

16/06/06 -- Gosh when I reread this chapter I found that I've unconciously revealed (the man)'s name! Arghh haha minor mistake but not supposed to! Anyway I've changed it already... still I think most of my readers have passed this point. For new readers, you'll have more fun guessing 'the man'. I should reread more, but usually too lazy too... :P
