Chapter 21: The Confession

“Michelle, why aren’t you appealing for Ray’s case?” Tavia looked very distressed. So were the rest of her friends.

“I will, but I need to work on it first…” Michelle said assuring Tavia with a pat.

“I can’t believe this. Our world’s a mess since we graduated,” Kenneth mumbled sadly.

“Okay, from the bits and pieces I heard from the hearing, this is all because of that Louis guy. Mich why are you still in contact with such a person? You know how dangerous he is!” Niki said.

“It’s my fault…” Jessica confessed softly. “I was too blind to fall for such a guy… And now Ray’s…”

“No, no… come on guys. I’ll work this out. But you have to give me some time. This case will be straightened out soon,” Michelle tried convincing her friends but in vain.

Personally, she was also unsure. She had never felt so helpless before. But she knew that this case’ critical factor was the one blocking her from winning the case. And that critical factor happened to be Louis. Michelle sighed and decided solving Louis’ complication was the only way to save Raymond.

“Ms Yip… or should I say Mrs. Lam?” Leila greeted as Michelle approached the reception.

“Hi Leila,” she replied.

“How can I help you?” she asked.

“I’m here to see Kevin,” Michelle requested.

“Officer Kevin? But…” Leila stuttered uncertainly.

“Leila?” Ron called, and then appeared from his office.

“Michelle…” he said in a colder voice. “How’re you doing?”

“Fine thank you, is Kevin around? I’ve some important matters to speak to him,” Michelle said.

“Michelle, I suggest you give up trying any tricks at our side,” Ron said grimly. “Raymond’s case is already a goner.”

Michelle sighed. “I need to see him. It’s important.”

Kevin happened to walk in at that moment.

“Officer Kevin, may I have a few words with you?” Michelle cried, grateful at his appearance.

Kevin stood, waiting for her to speak.

Michelle looked at Ron and Leila who were straining eagerly waiting for what she had to say. “Personally that is.”

“I don’t think we have anything to say then.” Kevin said walking off, half blaming her for Niki’s ignore towards him.

“What if it is concerning Officer Joe Ma?” Michelle cried in desperation.

Kevin halted in his track and turned to scrutinize Michelle, before waving for her to follow him into his office.

“What is it you know about Officer Joe Ma?” Kevin demanded as soon as they were secured from others earshot.

“That he had died in an operation leaving his undercover in the Mo’s no way out,” Michelle blurted not bothering to beat about the bush.

Kevin snorted. “Nice story. Is that all you’ve got?”

“This too,” she took out the crumpled piece of identification from her bag.

“Koo Tin Lok?” Kevin made out the fading words. He eyed Michelle questioningly, and she did not hesitate to pour the whole story.

“So you’re saying you picked this up from his locket when you saved a guy from the steps to your apartment?” Kevin said.

“Yes,” Michelle replied.

“But you’ve already won that case for Raymond. You denied infinitely that any of you had helped this so called wanted undercover,” Kevin said disbelievingly.

“Yeah, but…” Michelle did not know what to say.

“I’m sorry. You have an interesting story, but we police don’t tell stories like lawyers do. We work with evidence,” Kevin said showing her out of his office.

“Ron,” Kevin greeted as he walked in.

“Kev, what did the woman say?” Ron asked curiously. “Still trying to help that husband of hers huh?

“Actually, she claimed she was trying to help one of our so called colleagues. But I have no idea how much to trust that woman,” Kevin said. He repeated Michelle’s story for him.

“But, if her words are true, that means, she’s not a crook after all! And I kinda believe that she’s not Kev,” Ron said.

“Ron! You’re blinded by her beauty. Anyway, I suggest we look this up before reporting to our bosses,” Kevin said.

“Okay…” Ron agreed, suddenly excited that they may have been wrong all along about Michelle and her gang of friends.

Louis paced agitatedly glancing around the deserted alley.

“Michelle! Why are you so late?” Louis cried gratefully seeing her walk in.

“I’ve done it. I told them the whole thing,” Michelle said.

“What?!” Louis cried.

“There’s no other way, okay. Joe Ma died 3 years ago in that operation and your only way out of Mo’s was buried together,” Michelle said. “The only way is to ask them to dig into confidential files from their superiors. I’m only a lawyer okay, not wonder woman…”

“But they would never believe it!” Louis pointed.

“You’re right. They didn’t” she told him wearily.

“So what do we do now?” Louis asked. “I think Mo’s beginning to suspect me ever since I went out with Jessica and keep meeting up with you.”

“Of course he’s suspecting. You’re like denying every dirty job he asks you to do.” she reasoned.

“So what are you suggesting huh? You’re the one who asked me to stop doing them,” he retorted.

“Sure, you’re a police, not a crook like you began to believe you were,” Michelle said firmly.

“Sorry Mich, I’m just so sick of being buried here with the crooks. I just want to walk out and breath in fresh air and see the sunshine again… And…” Louis choked out his words in desperation.

“And apologize to Jessica and patch up with her,” Michelle finished it for him.

“You’ve been going all out to help me but all I do is blame you,” Louis said guiltily.

“It’s okay. I volunteered anyway.” Michelle eased his conscience.

“You’re too kind Mich. You’re getting yourself into troubles that don’t concern you,” he looked at her.

Michelle only smiled at his statement.

“I’ll let you know again when I have good news,” she finally said.

“Okay, and I’m sorry about… your husband. You’ve got to believe me. I didn’t know about it. It was all Mo’s idea,” Louis said apologetically.

“I trust you.”
