Winning & Losing

Chapter 25: Winning and Losing

Niki heaved a long sigh of relief, plopping down at her seat again just as the judge exited from the court and throwing her arms into the air. The gang of friends rushed forward; all smiling gratefully they had finally won the long battled case.

“Congratulations Raymond,” Alec patted his back. “You’re a free man!”

Raymond beamed contentedly at his friends.

“Thanks Niki…” he flashed an appreciative smile.

“But where’s Michelle?” Raymond asked the question he had been wondering since the hearing began. He noticed that both Wallace and Michelle had not bothered turning up at his hearing, and he could not help but feel it was more of a negative sign.

One by one, the faces that had just looked jubilant for a moment, turned gravely worried again.

Wallace scrambled down the cliff hurriedly towards Michelle who had not budged after her roll came to a stop at the foot of the hill. Louis trailed behind, cold gripping both their hearts. The bloody red spot where she lay motionless was not very optimistic looking.

“Michelle!” Wallace cried shaking Michelle’s lifeless body. He held her close, patting her much grazed cheeks anxiously, totally losing it when she did not reply in any way.

“Wake up, Mich! Mich! Mich…,” he tapped her deadly pale face harder, but with no avail. “No…, no… Please, Mich…”

Louis caught up and peered at the unmoving body in Wallace’s arms. There were cuts all over her body, but none were deep enough to cause so much blood. Louis realized that the blood was coming from between her hips.

“Wallace! Wallace, get up!”

He shook Wallace who looked too shaken by Michelle’s deadly look to notice her profuse bleeding. He pulled him up and dragged him along, with Michelle in his arms, running towards the small winding road, waving desperately for a passing car to stop.

The eight of them rushed towards the room they had been directed to by the reception nurse.

Louis was sitting on the bench outside, his face a lost blank. Jessica and Raymond rushed towards him shaking him violently.

“Louis?” Jessica shook him. “What’ve you done this time?!”

Niki stepped over and pulled them apart. “Shh… it’s the hospital. Besides, let’s see how Michelle is doing first…”

Niki had finally learnt the truth when she read up to take over the case. Yet, she did not reveal as she knew it was highly confidential. She finally understood why Michelle had been hesitant about letting her be involved.

Louis stood up and looked at them, especially the hatred that shone out of Jessica’s eyes, before burying his head in his hands. His heart felt a pierce of unknown pain.

“It… It is my fault…” he said, nodding bitterly, burying his head with his palms.

----------------------------------------------*Flashback*----------------------------------------------

“Officer Koo Tin Lok…” Michelle taunted further flinging his identification around.

“Where’d you get that?” Louis grabbed the locket around his neck, flipped open the amulet to find it empty.

“I took it when Niki left you in my care,” she said. “Actually, it fell out when I was trying to clean your wound, and I’ve kept it since because I never had the chance to repair that loose amulet of yours to make sure this piece of thing doesn’t fall out in front of your enemies…”

“Give it back,” he demanded.

“What are you doing Louis Koo?” she asked him.

“Huh…?” Louis lost of what she was trying to say.

“Are you actually becoming one of them? Do you remember why you were sent there?” she reminded him indirectly.

“I…”

“Doing drugs won’t help you get back to the police force you know…” she said pointedly.

“What do you know about my life?! I’m so screwed up here, nothing but drugs can help me stay sane okay!” he yelled back.

“Louis… or should I call you Mr. Koo?

Louis snorted rudely. “I’ve long forgotten that sucky name. I’m this damn rotten Louis for whatever sane mind I have left can I can tell…”

“Okay, Louis, stop doing whatever Mo asks you. You’ve to remind yourself of your true identity!” she said.

“But I’ve no way out. I’ve lost contact with the police force since my superior who arranged for me to go under Mo died in an operation three years ago…” he exclaimed in desperation.

“I’ll help you…” she offered.

“Huh? Why…?”

“Because I want you to leave Jessica alone until you’re back to the light as a policeman.”

“Jessica?”

Michelle nodded. “She likes you… but I can’t let her be involved with you until you are safe enough for her. I think you know the dangers better than I do…”

“You’ve got to help me out of this pit Michelle…” he pleaded hopefully.

“And you’ve got to find a way to keep Jessica away AND not commit any more crimes than you already have…”

“Do we have a deal?”

He nodded.

------------------------------------------*End of Flashback*------------------------------------------

Raymond pushed the dreaming Louis out of his way and barged into the room to see Wallace holding Michelle’s hand whispering tearfully. Michelle looked ghostly pale but was nevertheless awake, and was smiling weakly at Wallace.

“You’re fine now… You and your baby are both fine…” Wallace assured Michelle tenderly, not noticing Raymond behind him.

Baby? Raymond wondered in confusion and annoyance at Wallace’ warm gestures.

“Ray…!” Michelle cried at the sight of her husband, grateful that he was finally free again.

Raymond pulled Wallace up by his collar. “What’re you doing?!”

Wallace turned to face the fury Raymond, “Ray! Thank goodness you’re here…”

Raymond did not bother to listen more but just shoved him roughly aside, and knelt down by Michelle’s bedside taking her hand and kissing her forehead.

“Michelle, look at you…” he said seeing the many cuts and bruises all over her otherwise perfect look.

Michelle shook her head slightly and smiled. “I’m fine Ray. It’s good seeing you again. You’re free again… I’m just so thankful for that!”

“And… you…” Raymond asked uncertainly. “Baby…?”

“Oh, Ray, I wanted it to be a surprise after you are released…” Michelle spoke weakly. “Sorry I wasn’t there for you…”

Raymond nodded, holding her hand to his cheeks. “Don’t be silly… It is still a wonderful surprise… I’m just so glad you’re okay…”

“Oh, thank goodness you’re okay Mich!” Niki and Vicki cried at once when they entered the room. Raymond got up and stepped back as the two girls rushed forward.

Michelle nodded and smiled faintly. “My baby and I are both strong.”

“Vicki, sorry I’m such a nuisance lately, I… I’ve been too immature,” Michelle said remorsefully.

“Michelle! I’m so glad you’ve forgiven me…” Vicki bent over by her bedside, holding her hands.

“I’ve thought a lot while falling from that cliff…” she said so softly that neither Niki nor Vicki heard or grasped the meaning behind.
