Chapter 26: Twisted Twists

“Officer Kevin and Inspector Ron, are you trying to suggest the person we’ve been trying to nab all these while is someone on our side?” the panel of councils before them questioned grimly.

“Sir, we are not sure, but we have sources relating this to us. And from the information and database, we did find out that late Officer Joe Ma did have regular underground contact with Koo Tin Lok, also known as our prime suspect Louis Lai,” Kevin answered.

“But from our previous experiences, this certain Louis Koo doesn’t seem to be doing what an undercover does… He had already violating one law too many,” another officer commented. The other five nodded along, wagging their pens in their hands, demanding an explanation from the two.

“Sir, we hope you can approve our appeal to continue our search into the highly confidential database to straighten out this matter,” Kevin said again.

“So, what do you think?” Ron asked Kevin as they walk away from the meeting with the councils.

“I think we’ve to get in touch with this Koo-Lai guy right away… Either way, he’s way too dangerous…” Kevin replied halfway when they were interrupted.

“Officer Ng!” Leila skidded around the corner almost bumping into her two superiors.

“What is it Leila?”

“Raymond Lam’s case has been successfully turned over! He was released on the spot. And our informer has just given us the tip that Louis is at the hospital. Michelle is somehow injured! Should we arrest them now?” she reported in one breath.

Louis groaned in irritation as Ron muttered the line he had heard one time too many while Kevin inspected him from head to toe.

“Please come with us,” Leila said, cuffing him. Louis looked too dejected to refuse. His head hung low as he stepped weakly behind Kevin.

Jessica watched Louis going with them, dumfounded. She did not know what to think. Too many things were happening at once. She was worried about Michelle, and now she had just found out Louis Lai was Koo Tin Lok and that he’s taken away by the police. She slumped with a thud onto the bench that Louis had been sitting, trying to straighten the happenings in her head.

“Mr. Louis, do you understand our words?!” Kevin roared at Louis who didn’t even bother to blink.

“Can I go now?” Louis stood up as Niki settled his bail with another woman officer.

Leila looked like she was about to slap him. Ron held her shoulders. “Patience…”

Niki turned around, stared at Kevin coldly, before leaving together with Louis.

“Thanks Niki,” Louis whispered.

“Don’t mention it,” she replied stiffly. “But I’m not very comfortable to be acquaintance with villains. I did it for Jessica and Michelle… So long,” she waved, going her own way.

Louis sighed heavily, putting his hands into his pocket and whistled merrily on his way back to the Mo’s.

Louis reported back into Mo’s office.

“Boss, I’ve done it,” Louis said casually. He knew his boss would be more than happy at his return.

“Really? Then why did my man report that, that Cheng asshole still shouted at you? Didn’t he…?”

Louis slouched into the seat before Mo’s desk, picking up the lighter in the marble ashtray and began flicking it away. He grunted. “Old man, you’re losing your touch and faith in your brother.”

From the back of his torn jeans, he slowly pulled out sheets that seemed to have been folded in a hurry and squashed a little more than intended. Louis straightened the creases revealing a bright red confidential stamped across the sheets with a police force header. Mo’s eyes widened with glee and was about to pull them over but Louis had already let the corner of the sheets catch ablaze from the lighter. The sheets quickly flared as it crinkled reluctantly into black dust. He threw the burning flame into a rusty tin at the foot of the desk, adding to the pile of ashes that had once been Mo’s confidential crime evidence.

“Now, do you believe me?” Louis raised a taunting eyebrow.

“Good, good, very well Louis, it’s no wonder you’re my most capable assistant!” Mo threw his head back and laughing evilly.

“Nah, your genius plan couldn’t have been better! To kidnap Michelle and let me be the hero? Haha… They totally TRUST me now that I’ve ‘saved’ her,” Louis smirked at his laughing boss.

“What is it Boss Mo?”

“Louis, your connections with the police is one outstanding one…” Mo began slowly from behind his seat.

Louis gulped back his anxiety, a bead of nervous sweat rolled down.

“But of late, it is dying away…” he added, turning around to get up from his black leather armchair.

Louis nodded slowly, beginning to catch his meaning.

“I want you to refresh their memories... Do you understand?” Mo patted his back. “And… that damn Ray bastard got off the hook. I can’t believe my plan failed again. It’s no time to get back at him now but I don’t want the police come knocking my doors for any shitty murders case, do you understand?!”

Louis nodded grimly. “How do you want it done?”

“I want you to go back… To where you were rescued when you ran from the Hung’s… We shouldn’t have taken you away from there in the first place. But I was worried the Hung’s would come back and finish you off. Go to that big shot lawyer, she’ll get you where you want…”

------------------------------------------*End of Flashback*------------------------------------------

“They’ll never dream that the outstanding cadet they chose to spy on me was my undercover agent in their academy!” Mo could not suppress his triumphant guffaws.
