Niki patted gently on Michelle’s back, soothing her sobs uneasily. She bit her lips that were struggling to curse Raymond infinitely, and combed her raging mind for whatever suitable words to better the situation.
“Michelle… I’m sure Ray doesn’t mean what he says… He… he must be too drunk,” Niki stammered out the first yet lamest reason she could find.
Michelle lifted her head buried in her arms, and dared her teary eyes to look at Niki. Her pale cheeks were stained messily with wet tears. Looking into her eyes, Niki decided that she had definitely underestimated Michelle’s unhappiness. She immediately gave her inner self a slap for blurting out the damned name that seem to have triggered even more tears that were already flowing.
“Do you… do you think such words are permissible even when he’s drunk?” she stated more than asked. Niki just shook her head quietly, lost at what to be said. Michelle looked away and said no more. Her sobs quiet down gradually, but the tears seemed unstoppable. Niki sat by her side, only able to show her silent moral support, trying frantically to read what Michelle was thinking while gazing out the window at the moon which never seemed anymore crooked that the night’s.
There were knockings on their apartment door. Niki did not want to leave Michelle but the knockings were persistent. Michelle gave her a meaningful look.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be right back. If it’s that jerk, I’ll teach him a lesson for you!” Niki showed Michelle her fists.
“Who the hell would come at this time? It must be that jerk…” Niki muttered under her breath
Niki flung open the door angrily, but it was not Raymond.
“Hey Niki…” Kevin purred, handing her a bouquet of flowers.
“Oops…” Niki had totally forgotten that he was coming over for some get together at her place. She glanced back into the room. Michelle had already calmed down and walked out of Niki’s room to see who came.
“Hold it…” Niki said to a confused Kevin, slamming the door shut.
“Is that Kevin?” Michelle asked.
“Uh? No… just some guy who got lost…” Niki lied.
“Niki, how many times have I told you not to lie, you’re getting worse at it every time you try!” Michelle joked.
Niki scratched her head coyly.
“You’ve patched up huh?” Michelle teased Niki who was blushing. “Well, I’m glad you’ve understood the Louis case now and made up with him. This case was causing us much more than it deserved.”
Niki nodded in agreement, with a rueful sigh. “Though we’ve patched, we don’t date very openly since we don’t want suspicions…”
“Are you late for a date? Go on, I’m fine by myself. I just need a break from… that… that…” Michelle looked lost of what to call Raymond.
“Are you sure? I can date anytime, it’s not important. I can be here for you Mich,” Niki said sincerely, worried about Michelle.
“And I don’t want to be guilty of costing you your knight in shining armor,” Michelle gave Niki a push out of the door before she could say anything.

“I must be the worst wife on earth,” Michelle sighed at the plate of fried noodles before her.
“You’ve got to eat Mich,” Wallace watched Michelle staring at her food, not touching it at all.
“At least think of the hungry baby in you,” he persuaded seeing her still not eating. Michelle reluctantly poked into her food, forking a little into her mouth. Wallace sighed, relieved to see her eating something.
“I shouldn’t be sitting here…” Michelle suddenly got up after her first and only mouthful of food, picking her bag and turned to leave.
“Michelle, just eat something before you leave,” Wallace pleaded, his hand instinctively holding hers back.
“But he suspects of us… how can I be having lunch with you? It’s just going to make him unhappier and even more suspicious,” Michelle said bluntly, quickly pulling her hand away. “I’ve… I’ve really got to learn to be a better wife for him…”
“We’re having lunch for Christ sake! It’s not like we’re eloping…” Wallace tried to kid but it was definitely the wrong time. Suddenly, he felt an impulsive surge in his heart and before he knew it, he caught tightly by the wrist, causing her to look up at him, eyes rounded in surprise. Wallace mumbled some courage-collecting mantra under his breath before choking out his words.
“Do you love…” he felt his head exploding with the debates of the angel and devil within.
(Nyehehe… Do it Wallace, so what if she’s your sister, she doesn’t even know it. Grab her and she’s yours. After all, she was yours from the beginning! GO man, are you a chicken?!)
(No, Wallace, you can’t love another’s wife. That’s a sin. You’re a good man and you know it. You’ll regret your decision. She’ll hate you for that. She’ll hate you if your presence hurt Raymond anymore than it already did. She only wants her child to have a happy family she never had.)
Michelle narrowed her eyebrows at him. “Do you love… your baby? Remember to eat when you get home,” he finally blurted out.
Michelle mumbled something that sounded like ‘Thanks’ and walked off leaving Wallace staring on helplessly, with quite a stab of pain in his heart.

“Ray!” Wallace waved at him as he entered. Raymond nodded briefly and made his way towards him.
“Mich asked you to teach me a lesson?” he snapped grouchily.
Wallace sighed. “Have a seat Ray…” Raymond sat and called out to the bartender for his drink.
“Ray, you’ve got to trust Michelle. She… she really loves you. She studied your case day and night not even bothering for meals and sleep! She’s just that anxious about you! How can you doubt her…?” Wallace said.
“Yea, she studied my case, with you…” he snarled, gulping down his drink irately.
Wallace shook his head unbelievably at Raymond. “I thought you love her so much… I guess I was wrong. You can’t even tell if she loves you or not.”
“I can tell! She’s NO LONGER in love with me! And it’s all because of you… YOU! You ruined our bonding…” Raymond barked back. “Otherwise…”
“Me?” Wallace grunted. “You don’t have to worry about her coming back to me, Ray. Even if we still loved each other…”
“So you do admit that both of you still have feelings?!” Raymond cried in disgust.
“YA! I love her, as a sister! We’re siblings! We can never be together okay!” Wallace blurted out bitterly.
“What…? … You…” Raymond stared at Wallace. “Kin Wah?”
Wallace nodded sullenly. “I’m her brother, maybe half brother, but in any case, we have blood relation…”
“But you’re…” Raymond started, but choked back his words. But you’re adopted…
“Is that why you left her back in England?” Raymond asked again. Wallace looked at him, picking up the bottle instead of his mug and began drowning himself.

Raymond turned his keys and pushed the door open to find Michelle already home, waiting for him.
“Ray…” she called upon seeing him. She came over to take his briefcase and coat away.
There were quite a few dishes on the dining table that Raymond suspected Michelle had personally cooked, waiting for him to return for dinner.
“Have you eaten?” she asked meekly, though it was way after dinner time. “I… I’ve cooked your favorite dishes…”
Raymond looked uneasily at Michelle. Do you still love Wallace? He loves you… Did I come in between at wrong time…?
“I’m sorry Ray, I won’t meet Wallace again, at least not without you okay?” she slipped her arms around his waist to reconcile. “I love you.” She said giving him a promise peck on his cheek.
Raymond placed his hands on her shoulders. “Do you really love me Michelle?”
Michelle stared back at him, wide eyes and frankly replied, “I do… I do…”
Raymond pulled her close into his embrace. Michelle snuggled in, feeling his sturdy and secure hold. “Don’t be mad at me Ray, don’t leave me okay? I’ll listen to you… I’ll be a better wife…”
“I’m sorry Michelle… I was such a jerk last night… Can you forgive me?” Raymond said ruefully but Michelle had already gently kissed his lips silent.
“Come, let’s see what this big shot attorney has made for her husband… I didn’t know you can cook… Are you sure you’ve got the salt and sugar right?” Raymond resumed his old humorous self, dragging her towards the dining table. Raymond sat and pulled Michelle on his laps, where they fed each other happily, forgetting their past arguments.

Raymond stirred from his sleep. His eyelids were still shut but he could feel the pierce of light from a corner of the totally dark room. He opened an eyelid, and squinted towards the corner painfully as his eyes adjusted to the light. The toilet door was open and its light was on. It was then he was awake enough to realize there were barfing sounds from the toilet. He looked to his side. Empty.
“Michelle…?” Raymond jumped up to his feet and went to the toilet.
Michelle was holding back her hair while throwing up into the toilet bowl. He knelt by her and saw that she had beads of cold sweat and was very pale.
“Mich…” he helped her hold back her hair, easing her hands that felt icy cold. “Are you alright?”
Michelle looked at him with a weak smile. “Did I wake you?”
Raymond shook his head to assure her. “How’re you feeling?”
Michelle got up to her feet with Raymond’s help and flushed the toilet. “I’m fine Ray…”
“But you look so pale. You threw up so much you must’ve emptied the last few meals out…” Raymond still concerned.
“It’s normal Ray, I’m pregnant… sorry to have woke you…” Michelle said, as Raymond tucked her back into the bed.
“Next time just wake me okay? I’ll just give you moral support.” He said showing his hand can hold her hair.
Michelle touched his face, “Ow, that’s so sweet of you… but I just didn’t have the time and strength to wake a pig up…”
Raymond pinched her cheeks playfully. “Sleep tight my beautiful swan…”
Michelle closed her yes and fell asleep almost immediately, dreaming of the thousand swans Raymond made for her, flying around.
