The sun was too cheerful for the troupe of friends who were shedding tears silently before the tombstone. The birds did not seem to bother with their sorrows and sang away merrily.
Green leaves rustled rhythmically as the summer breeze greeted them. A single piece of crisp brown leaf was shed away, and danced in the air a while before landing on the tombstone where a picture of the person laying below smiled blissfully. There had been quite a crowd attending the funeral, but they had all drifted apart after conveying their condolences. The ones left standing there were the gang of friends who were closer than families.
Niki brushed away her tear but the next came almost immediately. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying too much. Tavia was on Raymond’s shoulder, sobbing. Jessica was kneeling down putting a bouquet of flowers and picking away the leave that had just landed. She outlined the face of the photo and whispered a silent ‘We’ll be missing you…’
Kenneth was soothing Tavia on Raymond’s arm by stroking her hair. “Shh… Tavia… What’s gone, is gone… what remains here, matters most…” he pointed to his heart.
He looked away as a tear rolled down his face too. He dried it quickly with the back of his hand and seeped in fresh air to calm down his heart overwhelmed with grief. Raymond looked tired and expressionless. His eyes were red but there were no tears. He had in fact been dried of tears.
Alec and Leo were standing with their hands in their pockets. They had been staring unblinkingly at the angelic face that looked too young to die. But it was already a fact, a reality they could no longer deny.
Leo put an arm around Alec’s shoulder. “I’m glad you gave Vicki a taste of love before she left. It’s something I’ve never been able to give her.”
“She was the most wonderful girl I’ve met in my life…” Alec muttered.
“I don’t understand why you never confessed your feeling for her during uni times…”
“I thought you two were a wonderful pair. I didn’t want to mess up anything. I’ve loved her since the first day I saw her, but you were already by her side. I felt happy for her. Love isn’t about possessing the person. It’s about seeing the person happy…” Alec sighed.
“Thank you for being so considerate… Otherwise I may not even have the few months of chance to take care of her. But in the end, she still left us…,” Leo said forlornly.
“I’m sure she’s very happy wherever she is now, so I’m happy for her too. Like I said, it’s about the person being happy. I don’t have to keep her by my side,” Alec reasoned and Leo nodded, patting him on his back.
“She’ll be happy to know you flew all the way here for her…” Alec looked at Leo who had rushed for the first flight to Hong Kong and made it just in time to Vicki’s funeral.
“It’s the least and last thing I could do…” Leo said in almost a whisper, fighting back the quiver of sob choking up.

Raymond watched Michelle struggling in her sleep again. She had been having this fit ever since her lungs transplant. He immediately pressed the emergency button by her bed.
“Michelle! Michelle…” Raymond tried calming her as she shook forcefully on her bed.
Steven and Myolie rushed in to examine her.
*******************
“Raymond, you must decide if you want to keep the baby… it’s not doing Michelle any good as she’s still weak from the lungs transplant… Her body’s adjusting…”
“Of course I want Michelle! The baby… I… I just want Michelle…,” Raymond said bitterly.
Steven nodded and beckoned Myolie to follow her back to push Michelle into the operating theatre.
*******************
“No….” Steven was amazed to see Michelle was actually awake and speaking.
“No Steven… don’t take away… please…” she whispered earnestly with whatever energy she had.
“But Raymond has agreed… it’s dangerous for you…” Steven tried reasoning.
“I’m awake now… I will make it,” she said stubbornly.
Steven had been a doctor for many years. The powers of mothers had over their child never failed to amaze him. Michelle had actually fought to awake from her coma to protect her baby. Steven had never realized it. He was worried before because Michelle was unconscious too long to do the baby any good. Besides…
But now she was awake. Maybe there’s no such need after all.

Raymond stroked her hair. His heart was skipping with joy. Michelle had finally awaken but she fell back to sleep again because she was too weak.
Michelle stirred and Raymond thought she was about to wake up again.
“Mich…?” he called hopefully.
But Michelle’s eyes remained shut, though her lips part to weakly mumble.
“… wel…” her head turned.
“Wallace…” her face looked troubled.
Raymond’s hand stopped stroking her hair. Michelle’s head began to shake in disagreement as if debating with herself in her sleep.
“No… no…”
“Ray… don’t leave… I’ll be a better wife… Ray… I’ll love you with all my heart…”
“I’m your wife… Ray… nothing changes that… I’ll love you…”
Raymond’s heart felt a surge of misery as well as a mixture of a thousand confused feelings.

END of Chapter
Author:
Okay, so how’s that? Did I successfully trick you thinking Michelle/ Louis died? Haha… Oh my god, I’m going crazy with the ending. I’ve reread these few chapters about infinite times to determine the ending. I’ve actually fixed their partners, but I just don’t know how to bring the partnering about. *Sigh* (this comment was typed while I was writing the story ... :P)
