“Shirley!” Michelle called, not bothering to use the intercom.

“Yes, Ms Yip?” her secretary hurried in.

“Where’s the file on the insurance claim case by a transport company?” Michelle asked not looking up. Shirley’s eyes widened with astonishment.

“You… I have placed it there…” she pointed to a black file on top of the pile before Michelle.

“Oh... sorry, thanks,” Michelle smiled apologetically at her, reaching for it. Shirley went out feeling astonished that Michelle who was usually very organized and had photogenic memory actually forgot that she had asked for the document 15 minutes ago. Maybe she’s just too busy nowadays…

Michelle flipped open the file and the data and information all looked fresh new to her.

God… she scanned down the pages fearfully. I… I’m sure I’ve studied this case… The hearing is the day after tomorrow…

She debated to study it all over again, but she thought of the consequences if she lost the memory during the hearing instead. Sighing, she knew the time had come. She quickly typed a few lines of words in a new page of her word processor and printed it out. Slipping the folded sheet into a white envelope, she headed to the office of the manager of the law firm.

***************************

Niki was still at work by the time Michelle had hurriedly packed all her belongings and travel documents into one large suitcase. She weighed down her sheet of note with a piece of china on their TV shelf, and walked out of the apartment, shutting the door behind her.

***************************

Jessica stepped out of Louis’ room, and walked over to the water cooler at the corner. Michelle peeped from her corner and saw that Steven had already approached her and invited her to his office for a discussion.

I owe you one, Steven… Michelle watched the two disappeared around the other end before slipping into Louis’ room.

***************************

Michelle took one look around the house that Raymond and she barely had the chance to appreciate enough to build a home, let alone a family.

Sighing, she picked up her luggage of the rest of her belongings left at the house and walked outside where a taxi was already waiting.

“Goodbye Raymond… I’ll try to remember you for as long as I can…” she whispered, as the taxi brought her further and further away until the beautiful house was out of sight.

Jessica, Raymond, Niki, Tavia, Kenneth and Alec put down their slips together onto the dining table, exchanging to read each others. They were all stun to find the note sticking out of vases, or in their mail box or on the table or shelf.

My instinct told me to believe that he is a good man, and he is. My instinct tells me he’s waking up, so he will. Have faith Jessica, Louis will be fine. -Michelle.

Every time I take in a new breath I will be reminded of Vicki, and of you. Thank you for giving my sister what she has always been afraid to receive, love. Take care, Alec, you’ll always be our sunshine man. -Michelle

My dearest sleepyhead, don’t bully Kevin so much so that I’ll still get to see him alive and jumping about with you on my return. I miss you already… -Michelle.

Only with courage, silent admiration can bloom into a deep, sacred love. Don’t trust your mind, trust your heart Tav. Remember Vicki’s letter… -Michelle

Raymond, I realized fate will always get the better of us. It seemed that I won’t be able to keep you in my mind for a very long time anymore as much as I want to. Take care. -Michelle

Yesterday’s history, tomorrow’s a mystery, today’s a gift, that’s why it’s called present and my most precious one would be you, Kenneth. Thank you for being present in my life. I’ll always have a place for you in my heart, whatever happens… -Michelle.

They looked around after they finished reading, still not understanding Michelle’s sudden take off, but no one had tears in their eyes no matter how bitter their heart felt of a lost of friend, because they knew Michelle would be happier to have her decision respected.

Kenneth sighed, he had finally understood Michelle’s message, and he knew she foresee that he would read it. He had always been the one who understood her most, whatever she had in mind, he read it like his own. The reason she did not write so directly would be her way of asking him to keep it to himself. He glanced at the six pieces of notes put together again, at the first alphabet of each of her six messages and sighed seeing she had left behind her ‘MEMORY’.
