Epilogue: Winter Rainbow

Year 2015

Wallace held onto his briefcase and brought his knuckles down to knock the door.

“Hie, may I help you?” a young man in his early twenties opened the door.

“I’m looking here for the advertisement you put. Is this place for sale?”

“Yes, yes please come in…” the man opened the door to let him in.

Wallace seated himself as he stared around at the amusing decorations. There were words, pictures, photos, drawings and cute little red arrows all over the walls. It looked like someone was making notes, it also looked like directions but all made very beautifully so that it doesn’t mess but instead titivated the bare walls.

“Here, have a cup of hot tea…” the man returned.

“These…” Wallace pointed to the all little sticking on the wall with a questioning look.

“Oh that…” He laughed a little and was about to explain when the air began filled with a tune Wallace will never forget.

He put down his cup and stood up slowly. His heart beat was not racing, but slowing down. He held his breath as he followed the lead of the heavenly tune and found his way into the inner side of the living room where a grand piano was placed in the middle of the space. There was a figure behind it, but he couldn’t see the person from his angle. The young man came over, and Wallace was embarrassed to realize that he had walked in without his invitation. He stopped at his spot.

“It’s alright,” the man mouthed, not wanting to disrupt the music and stood by his side. It was a while before the piece ended. The young man hurried forward and went behind the piano.

“Mum, it’s a wonder how you can remember such a lengthy song despite forgetting whatever else…” he took the hand of the person and led her to the front.

Wallace heart slowed to a stop… frozen. A gasp escaped his lips.

“Jay, who’s here?” Michelle asked, looking straight at Wallace. Her eyes did not blink with any recognition.

“Mum, we’ve a visitor today… Careful…” Jay led her with care towards a seat in the outer living room.

Wallace followed, not uttering a sound. He was too astounded, too unprepared to see her, but most of all, he definitely didn’t expect such a reaction of hers when seeing him. After all the years of searching high and low for her, never did he imagine they would meet in such a coincidence.

Taking over Yip’s Corporation as the only heir eligible kept him at England, allowing him only sending futile searches all over the globe. Then life got meaningless, thus he left the company in the care of Victor, only signing crucial documents and was thinking of residing permanently in Hong Kong, buying a decent residence…. He had the urge to rush forward and hug her asking her what’s wrong with her, but he held it back. He was definitely still the coward who left her more than a decade ago.

The woman before him looked like she stayed in some time constant space… She didn’t seem to have aged much. She looked even more stunning than before… But something was missing. That pair of eyes… It doesn’t look like an open window anymore… Nor did it look like how she had once walled them to others, yet there were no sparkles… no movement, no spirit, it was still, it was blank… It was dead.

“Kin…” Michelle stared at him and smiled. “Wah…”

Wallace looked at her, eyes widening with shock.

“Sorry,” Jay chuckled at Michelle. “Don’t mind her stares. Her vision is blurred. She doesn’t mean to stare. And the name… It’s my mum’s habit of repeating whatever flashes in her mind. She’s suffering from memory lost and visual side effects due to an operation quite a long time ago. Sometimes she recalls bits and pieces, so she repeats them for me to help her write it down, hoping she can read it to remind herself one day she’s totally lost of all her memories…”

Michelle… What’s wrong with you? What happened to you?!

“Wallace…”

Her son laughed again. “You know what, mum that’s about the only two names you ever remember nowadays… Oh, and that Vicki girl.”

Michelle nodded sadly, but her eyes stayed as expressionless. “One day, I’m going to forget your name too, Jay.”

“Don’t worry mum, I’ll always be by your side to remind you. To remind you of your Wah gor, Wallace and Vicki okay?” he squatted down patting Michelle’s lap.

“Oh, I’m sorry Mr….?” Jay turned to Wallace to continue their discussion earlier, and then realized the man had yet introduced himself.

“I… I’ll come by another day,” Wallace said and left hurriedly.

Michelle stood up so hastily that she almost lost her balance. That voice…! She couldn’t see the person clearly, only a blur figure, but the person who just spoke was definitely someone she had known well in the past, someone important... That voice sounded so familiar! Her hands reached out towards the voice. “Mr... Mr…?”

“Mum, he’s left already. It must be your stares. You should’ve put on your shades…” Jay teased, not noticing Michelle’s anxiety, catching her gently to ease her back to her seat.

The next day at an eatery, Jay and Wallace had an appointment. Jay decided it was for the best if his Mum had made the gentleman uncomfortable.

“Why are you selling the place?” Wallace asked.

“Oh don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just that Mum suddenly felt she should go to England. I know, I know, it may be one her weird guessing, but it’s all a son can do for his mum. I hope you don’t think I’m a nutcase…” Jay replied with a small laugh.

“No… you’re… a good son…” Wallace said quietly. A son I’ll never be… I never was…

“Do you mind me asking… uh… how… old are you?” Wallace stammered. Is he Raymond’s son? But, he should be still a youngster by the age… 13 to be exact.

Jay looked flattered at his concern and laughed. In fact, the young man was quite a cheerful one. “Me? I’ve just turned twenty a month ago. I know what you must be thinking, that my mum’s young enough to be my sister… Well, actually I was adopted by Mum when I was 7. She’s about the nicest Mum anyone can have, so I don’t really feel like I’m adopted.”

“I see…” Wallace nodded understanding.

“We’re really in a hurry to go, so the price is very flexible. In fact, we wanted to leave two weeks ago, when Mum had this weird dream… Opps, sorry, don’t mind me babbling away again. Anyway, she just has the instinct she needs to go to England…” Jay tried to keep their conversation as formal and official as possible.

“What’s her dream?” Wallace asked a little too earnestly that Jay stared back in surprise.

************************

“I’ll buy the place,” Wallace said without hesitation. “When are you leaving for England?”

Jay looked surprised again at his rush. “Oh, we’ll move as soon as possible if you’re in a hurry…”

“No… no… A week,” Wallace said hurriedly. “We’ll do the hand over a week later.”

A week later…

Michelle put her shades away. It was bad enough that her vision was blurred, she didn’t need the sunglasses to further darken her dim world. But Jay had said her eyes seemed to be staring all the time. The shades were to avoid people misunderstanding her stares.

She sighed smilingly at the thought of her adopted son’s meticulous precautions and looked around. The park was quiet and deserted. No figure was around so she needn’t worry about that. She seeped in the cold air. It was a sunny winter day. The cold was not too harsh. For some unknown reason, she loved winter. The snow white of everything soothes her, but now she could hardly see it anymore.

She tilted her head, shaking her black silky hair off her shoulders. The sky looked brighter to her. It had enough light for her imperfect vision. She could see patches of clouds and sometimes shadows soaring in the skies. She turned her head to see more. Her eyes were doing exceptionally well today. She could almost see her grayish sights painted with colors. The sky actually looked blue to her.

Michelle’s heart skipped. My vision… Is it improving?

She stood up and looked around. It returned to the usual dull gray patches. She looked up the skies again and this time she was sure she was seeing colors. In fact, she was seeing something she had not seen a long time. It was a shower of rainbows. The rays were criss-crossing each other beautifully. But they seem to be shifting…

Winter rainbow… What’s a winter rainbow? I seem to have known of this in the past…

Michelle hurriedly walked towards the direction of the rainbows. Her fast walk gradually became small jogs and then she was running. The colors of the rainbow had triggered the memories in her.

Like a cork finally pulled open, the well bottled memories began flooding her mind, racing with the speed she was sprinting. So many faces, so many happenings, the puzzles that she often saw in her head were filling up, forming many, many clear and whole pictures instead of the usual falling apart and then collapsing away.

Her heart was beating faster, pumping in the cold air, refreshing her every muscle, tendon, nerves, and cells, especially the ones in her brain. It had been a long time since her blood rushed in her veins. Her restricted vision made sure she never walked any faster than necessary. Her movements were so slow, she saw so little, she was almost dead. But now, she was speeding up. She seemed to feel something she had not been feeling for a long time. Life. She felt alive.

Her eyes never left the rainbows as she ran. She could almost make out what the rainbows were forming. She slowed down and finally stopped to read them as she gulped down her heart that seem to be jumping out. The image she had seen one time too many…

It’s my dream again… I’m seeing it so often that I’m even seeing in during daytimes… I’ve finally remembered what these beautiful colors are… she thought looking at the heart shape hovering above her.

She turned around abruptly to continue seeking the source, but bumped right into the chest of a man.

“Always doing that huh?” the voice said.

“Wallace…?” this time she called with recognition.

“Michelle… you finally see again…” he hugged her close, his arms tightened with every bit of possessiveness he had.

“When… was it you?” she asked, recalling the stranger’s visit to her house recently.

He nodded. “I’m sorry, I’ve been too blind, I’m sorry to have left you alone for so many years… But I promise, I’ll never leave your side again… Never…”

Michelle walked over to find the source of the rays shooting. There was a carpet of carefully arranged crystals on the snow grounds, where the sun ray shone and was reflected. She saw the crystal’s sparkles, the white snow and the brown twigs of bare trees. She saw colors, and she saw them clearly…

Wallace came from behind and slipped his arm around her waist, bending down to smell her hair like the past. “I’ve missed you so…”

“I’ve missed you even more… Do you know how bitter it is to miss someone yet forget who you are missing?” Michelle wept, falling into his arms.

Wallace nodded his head and kissed her forehead. “I’m so sorry my princess…”

Michelle looked at him with surprise. His face looked so drowned in sorrow; she couldn’t resist putting a palm on it, and gently smooth away the lines of grief. “What… what did you call me?” He sounds like Wah gor…

“You would never forgive me Michelle. I’m so sorry, I’m so stupid. I… I’m Kin Wah! I thought we had blood relation, but later I found out I was adopted,” Wallace blurted out.

“That was why you left me….? Wallace… Wah gor… I’ve missed you so much! You’ve just combined the two persons I loved most into one. I don’t know how much love I have for you!” Michelle said, tears still streaming down her cheeks, tears of happiness.

Wallace wiped her tears away. “Don’t cry my princess. Your eyes just got better. Don’t strain them with tears…”

“But the tears of happiness will help cure my sight…” Michelle closed her eyes. Wallace bent over and kissed her lips that were salty with her tears. They kissed like they’ll never end as their arms tightened around each other. I love you they no longer need words for communication; they can practically hear voices each others hearts.

Louis, Jessica, Niki, Kevin, Raymond, Tavia, Kenneth and Alec appeared from behind and watch the couple that had been through so much. The sight of their embrace was too beautiful for words. Niki had tears in her eyes.

“You’re crying again,” Kevin teased and immediately got an elbow in his stomach.

“Now that Michelle’s back, I don’t need to refrain myself from bullying you to death anymore…” she said between her sobs. Kevin laughed, clutching his stomach in sweet pain and held her close to him. He had gotten too used to Niki that his pain receptor must’ve died after all the years.

The rest couldn’t help marveling the winter rainbow across the sky that seemed to be congratulating the couple and them that they had all finally reunited.
