The figure hidden at the opposite shop lots crept out slowly from his hidden position to spy the side entrance of the corner lot. His eyes watched until the two figures vanished completely from the street in a silver blue Hyundai before appearing entirely.
He gave his followers behind him a permitting wave. A troupe of men in dark suits and sunglasses appeared from behind him and marched across the street into the last lot wearing stern expressions.
They strode up the stairs in unison, and forced open the door of the first apartment they encounter. The troupe divided into pairs and began searching around. Before long, they paraded away with an extra figure hidden among them.

Michelle felt her upper left eyelid jumping nonstop that morning. She was not a superstitious person, but besides the jumping eyelid, she felt her heart thumping unusually faster ever since she had left home with Niki this morning. Feeling uneasy she picked up her phone and dialed.
“Hello Niki?”
“Morning Mich! Calling me at this hour? So, the most famous and reputable lawyer in Hong Kong does take her time off too huh? Tsk... Tsk…” Niki teased.
“No, I was just thinking we should go back to…,” Michelle looked around, but everyone else was busy with their tasks and no one looked about to enter her office. “…to check on Louis.”
“Huh..?” Niki was a bit surprised at her suggestion. They had after all left him enough food and all the necessities and even a phone with a list of their contacts by him for him to call anyone in emergency.
“I just have this bad feeling…” Michelle began.
“Okay sure, I’ll go by at 12 is that alright?” Niki said understandingly.

Niki and Michelle alighted and walked up to their apartment. They reached their doorstep to find their apartment door thrown wide open. Michelle looked at Niki.
“I quite remembered I shut it…” Niki said uncertainly trying to recall if she had really been that absent minded.
Michelle rushed in and went into Niki’s room to find it empty.
“Louis’s gone!” Michelle cried.
“What?!” Niki went in to confirm Michelle’s claim.
“I’ll call the others to see if they’d brought him away…” Niki dialed furiously.
“I doubt that they would break in and then leave our door wide open…” Michelle observed their door that had been forced open.
Niki’s jaw dropped apart at Michelle’s discovery.
“That also means Louis didn’t walk away voluntarily...” Michelle added.
Niki’s jaws gaped wider, but then hurriedly closed up again. Michelle watched as the colors drained noticeably from her friend’s face. Niki’s phone slipped from her hand and drop with a thud onto the carpet.
“Niki…?” Michelle began, but saw Niki’s eye staring past her.
She turned around to find herself facing a CID holding out his identification an inch away from her nose.
“We have the right to believe that you are involved in a crime we are investigating and would like to detain you for further questioning. You may remain silent, but all you say may be used as evidence against you in court,” the officer rattled in one long breath.
Not again… Michelle thought. I’ve had enough of this back in England…
“No, you can’t do this!” Niki cried as the police officer ‘invited’ her for a free ride as well.
An officer who had not bothered to go up to their apartment was sitting comfortably in the front passenger seat.
“Oh, yes, I assure you we can…” he said without turning over. “Here’s your warrant…”
The voice sounded hauntingly familiar to Niki.
“Hey…” Niki tried to catch a glimpse of his face, when he suddenly turned around. Her eyes bulged in disbelief.
“YOU?!” they both shouted simultaneously into each other’s face.
“Hmmh!” they both turned away their face in annoyance.
“You know him…?” Michelle whispered to Niki. Niki nodded. She had forgotten all about the little accident in the excitement of rescuing Louis.
“You a friend of the girls, Officer Cheng?” the police in the driver seat asked. Officer Cheng scanned down the warrant in his hands.
Niki Chow Lai Kei… he groaned.
“We’re gonna have one great time…” was all he replied. Niki began to wonder if he meant it menacingly or sarcastically, but then decided that either way, she was at the losing end.

“Some kind of lawyer you are huh?” Kevin jeered at the girl who shifted uncomfortably before him. “Always stepping over the lines…”
“I can’t believe you’re actually a cop. I’ve done nothing okay…” Niki spat hatefully. What’s with this guy? The sight of him makes me sick…
Another officer entered the room with a file in her hands.
“Shoot away,” Kevin ordered the other who was obviously his subordinate.
“Ms Chow… What’s your full name registered?” Leila asked.
Niki rolled her eyes. They had her ID. “Niki Chow Lai Kei…”

Ron entered the investigation room and found a face he was too familiar with.
“You…?” he asked in surprise.
Michelle looked up to the police officer before her. He seemed to recognize her but he definitely did not ring any bell in her head.
“Er… Michelle Yip Suen… here for questioning on a case…” she said uncertainly.
“It’s really you!” Ron cried in excitement.
Huh… Do I know this guy? Michelle asked herself.
“You’re my idol!” Ron exclaimed excitedly. “Your face appears in the newspaper almost everyday. I’m your fan. You are the best lawyer we have in Hong Kong!”
He seated himself opposite her and turned open the file, but his expression remained friendly.
Hmmm… Okay… I’ve had so many experiences of being held up… This is the first… Michelle thought to herself.
“Do you have a lawyer coming?” Ron asked stupidly. “Oh, I forgot, you’re about the best one around, I suppose you’ll be watching for yourself?”
Michelle nodded humbly.
“Okay, don’t worry Ms Yip, we just want some information from you. I’m sure a lawyer as professional as you won’t be anywhere near this man, let alone be involved in his case…” Ron said showing her a photo of a man that was unmistakably Louis’.
