Chapter 6: Sinking In
___________________________________________________________________________

Thursday 13th June 2002

Michelle found herself meeting Ron at the police station before she realized it.

“Hie Michelle!” he greeted cheerfully. His mood lifted when he saw the girl that never failed to mess the rhythm of his heart thumps.

Leila, who observed her senior’s abnormal friendliness, felt a surge of sour jealousy. Ron had always been cool to her, and everyone else, but he smiled non stop whenever he met this legendary lawyer.

“Officer Tong!” Ron summoned.

Leila trotted reluctantly. “Yes Sir!”

“Bring two cups of hot coffee to my office please. I’ll have to entertain this beautiful lady…” Ron ordered as he invited Michelle into his office graciously.

Leila opened her mouth to refute but his door already slammed shut. Grudgingly, she went and carelessly spilt the coffee powder and hot water into two cups of messy mixture. Not bothering to add any sugar, she brought the coffee to Ron’s office.

Without a word, she grumpily put down the two cups so violently that some spilt onto Michelle’s skirt.

Michelle jumped up. “Ah…”

Ron sprung up from his seat and immediately went over to help her clean but Michelle brushed him off.

“I’m fine…” Michelle said. Leila looked apologetic. After all, she was only mad at Ron not Michelle.

“Leila! What is the meaning of this barbaric manner?!” Ron barked at her. Leila’s face reddened with annoyance. Her cheeks puffed as though going to blow, but she pouted her lips to screw in all the anger eruption within her.

“It’s alright Ron. It’s not her fault. She didn’t do it on purpose…” Michelle smiled at Leila, trusting her to be unintentional. Leila felt a mixture of guilt and madness within her.

Ron turned around to apologize again. “Sorry about that silly girl. She’s new here and her hands work like her legs…”

Not trusting herself to stay silent any longer, Leila stormed out of Ron’s office slamming the door shut behind her.

“What?!” Ron almost shouted.

Michelle just looked at him and nodded, confirming her statement.

“But... but…” Ron found her confession hard to accept.

“I won’t blame you Ron, otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here,” Michelle said offering her hands to be cuffed.

Ron stared blankly at the girl before him, his jaws slightly apart.

Reluctantly, he pushed a button on his phone, “Officer Tong, please come in.”

Leila trudged unwillingly into Ron’s office. What now…?

Ron seemed to have his gaze locked upon Michelle. It was only after Leila cleared her throat three loud times that Ron realized her presence.

“Ah… Leila… Michelle…” Ron stuttered his words.

“Yes?” Leila asked impatiently.

She took one look at the well known lawyer. She has such perfect complexion, such angelic face and most of all a pair of such captivating eyes. It’s no wonder the famously nicknamed Ice Man Ron couldn’t help melting before her.

“Michelle… is under arrest for hiding a wanted criminal.” Ron blurted out finally, and Leila looked even more bewildered.

“Michelle!” Niki and Raymond both cried when they visited her.

“What are you doing?!” Raymond asked, his hand unconsciously gripping hers.

Michelle smiled weakly. “Someone will have to confess. Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”

“But… couldn’t you have told us first?” Niki demanded.

“Shh… calm down you two, especially you Raymond,” Michelle ordered her two friends who looked frantic.

“How can we?!” Raymond cried. “This is like the N-th time you’ve been arrested since the day I’ve met you.”

“And I’d thought you would have gotten used to it,” Michelle cracked unsuccessfully as her two friends returned her their dejected looks.

“You’re a lawyer Niki… I expect you to understand why I’m doing this.” Michelle said hopefully.

“I…”

“You know that surrendering and being arrested is a big difference,” Michelle continued.

“Then I should surrender with you!” Niki exclaimed.

“No! There’s no such need,” Michelle insisted. “I have it all planned out. I will be alright. Don’t you trust me? I need you to be free to fight this case for me.”

Her two friends were left with no choice but to nod in agreement.

Niki and Raymond were leaving the police station when Kevin stood in their way. He took one good look at Raymond and then shifted his gaze to Niki. He handed out a sheet to her.

“My insurance…” he jeered happily at a frowning Niki. Niki moodily snatched it out of his hand.

Niki scanned down the insurance claim disbelievingly. “Hey, I only lightly scratched your damn car! What’s with this shitty long list of crap?”

“Oh, that… My car needed some convenient realignment and change of parts due to the shock of your dangerous driving…,” Kevin added not very apologetically.

“Of course, it would not be too appropriate to claim such expensive reimbursement from a newly graduated, poor lawyer like you huh…,” Kevin mocked attempting to take back the sheet.

“I can very well afford these minor expenses of yours,” Niki said indignantly slipping the claim into her bag. “Now, if you’ll excuse us…”

Laughing scornfully, he stepped aside to let Niki and her friend walk past. Kevin felt a strange feeling of satisfaction every time he successfully provoked Niki into frustration.

“Wow, her face looked black as thunder Kev…” Ron commented from behind after Niki and Raymond left.

“Ha, ha, I just love to see irritation distort that defiant face of hers…” Kevin laughed some more, before returning to his office.
