Now every morning Ron would wake up feeling the sun shining upon him, yet he can’t see it. He smiles at the fact that he never has to witness any tragedy because he can’t see but on the other hand…he feels everything. Having a gift for music when he was younger his father allowed him to pursue his passion. His room filled with many instruments from different time periods…he was able to play any instrument in matter of minutes.
He sat there at his Schimmel Pegasus grand piano and felt his fingers touch the different keys making sound resonate through the air. He plays with so much passion that you could feel it from within. Just because he was blind didn’t mean that he couldn’t do things…in fact he did more things to help people than a normal person would. Every Saturday he would go to the hospital and read or tell stories to the little children who like him are also blind.
~Hospital~
As soon as they heard his footsteps and his voice they knew it was him.
Little Kids: Ron! Come read to us! Sing us a song! Play us something on the piano! Please!!!!
It felt as if the little kids there rehearsed those lines because every time he came there that was what they said. But each and every time they do…it brings a smile to his face. He held his walking stick in one hand as he went towards the kids and sat down on the rocking chair that he sits in every week.
Ron: So what story should I tell you today?
Little Boys: Batman! Superman! Spiderman! Robin Hood!
Little Girls: The little Mermaid! Sleeping Beauty! Cinderella!
Ron: Hmmm…I can’t hear Tiffany’s voice today…is she here?
Tiffany: I’m here
Ron: What do you want me to tell you about today Tiffany?
Tiffany: Umm…umm…that story with the ugly witch and the little people and that princess who ate that apple…
Ron: Whoa there…it seems like you’re telling the story…so you want me to tell you about Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs?
Tiffany: That’s the story!
Little girls: Yay!!! Snow white! (They shouted with glee)
Little boys: Do we have to listen to Snow White…it’s a girly story.
Ron: Next week you can choose. But this week is Tiffany’s choice so you have to respect her decision…if you don’t I won’t come here anymore.
Little boys: Ok…(They sighed) We’ll listen to you Ron…
Ron: Good. Let me begin. Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess named Snow White…she lived with her father the king and her stepmother the queen.
Jacky: What’s a s...stepmother?
Ron: She’s the person your father marries but isn’t your mother…
Jacky: Do I have a stepmother?
Ron: I don’t know…
Little girls: Jacky stop asking questions we want to hear the story.
Jacky: Ok…I’ll be quiet now…Ron you can continue.
Ron smiled: So the queen would ask her magic mirror…
Little Girls: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of them all?
Ron laughed seeing how the little girls had basically memorized the story.
Ron: And what did the mirror say?
Little kids: Snow White!
As he continued to tell the story memories of his childhood flashed through his mind. By the time the story was over he was smiling from the inside out.
After story time was over Ron left and was guided to the exit by a doctor.
Ron: Thanks Bernice.
Bernice: We should thank you Ron…every year you and your father donate so much money and plus you spend so much time here with the kids.
Ron: I want them to enjoy themselves even if they can’t see.
Bernice: I forgot to ask…
Ron: What?
Bernice: When will you release your next CD…the instrumental one?
Ron: Soon I hope…
Bernice: Whenever I can’t sleep as long as I put on one of your CDs I fall asleep right away…your music is just so soothing.
Ron: That’s the purpose of it isn’t it…to help people relax.
Bernice: Seems to me you really like how things are going…have you ever considered getting an operation on your eyes?
Ron: There’s no need…why should I want something more than I already have. Even though I lost my eyes sight, my hearing has improved significantly and plus I don’t need to see to know how others feel…I can hear it in their voices or even feel it with my sixth sense.
Bernice began to laugh: You’re always so optimistic…
Ron: When you can’t see a single bad thing…there’s nothing to be negative and pessimistic about.
Bernice: I think that’s your chauffer…
Ron: Lend me a hand?
Bernice: Of course.
He held onto her hand and the other onto his walking stick as he walked out of the hospital and into the shimmering summer day. He could smell the fresh air…feel the nice warm breeze in his hair and of course her presence. Ever since he started going to the hospital a few years back, him and Bernice have become great friends. Many of the people working there assume that there’s something between them but the truth was…there was nothing.
As he got into the car and said his goodbye to his good friend more pictures of his childhood memories flashed through his mind. As soon as she had shut the car door and the chauffer had driven him off he began to think.
~Ron’s thoughts~
It’s been 20 years …wonder how she is now? Wonder how she looks like? But wait I can’t see her…If I do ever meet her…how will I ever recognize her?
~End of his thoughts~
He arrived home and knew that his dad was sitting on the couch waiting for him like he usually does.
Sek Sau: How was it?
Ron: It was great…
Sek Sau: I know I should’ve asked you first but I think I should hire you a personal assistant to help you out…because I need to use the chauffer too so…
Ron: Sure dad. Thanks.
Sek Sau: Well we’ll be holding the interviews tomorrow and you can see whom you like. I mean pick the person you feel comfortable with.
Ron: Sure dad. I’ll be going to my room now.
Sek Sau: Need a hand?
Ron: I know this house like the back of my palm.
Sek Sau: If you say so.
