Chapter 19

Seed Of Hope

Gallen sat on the sofa dazedly. He was drowned in perplexity. Why had Flora left? Where had she gone to? Has she gone back to Bowie? The thought of this saddened him immensely. He had done everything he could, but a fact remained unchanged. He was annoyed. God didn’t make good of his promise, he didn’t!

He runs through his messy hair hastily with his hands and closed his eyes. He is really tired, exhausted!

The doorbell rang simultaneously, but Gallen chose to ignore it. It went a bit faster, and hastier, until it reached a speed of 120 rings/minute.

“Gallen! Are you there? Open the door! Gallen!” Loud noises were heard behind the door, but Gallen didn’t go to fetch it. He didn’t want to see anybody now.

The batch outside didn’t give up nonetheless. “Gallen! Open the door or we will call the police, Gallen!” Moses shouted at the top of his voice.

“Gallen, please… we are worried about you, open the door, please…” Jessica pleaded.

“Do you still see us as your friends, Gallen? Open…” Moses’ shout was disturbed by the creaking open of the door. Gallen stood out spiritlessly behind the door.

He was right. There was a whole batch of them outside. All except Flora and Bowie.

He returned to his sofa. The rest of them surrounded him. All of them remained silent, until Moses decided to speak up.

“Gallen, we already know what happened. Maggie told us all.” Moses places one hand on Gallen’s shoulder. “Now where is Flora? Has she fled with Bowie?”

“Yes, do you know where she is now? Bowie hasn’t return to HT today!” Maggie sounded anxious and worried.

“They must be together then.” Gallen almost whispered, and his heart was shattering while he’s saying this. He looked so tired, so dispirited, in a way which pain his friends so much.

“Gallen…” Jessica uttered softly and places her hand on his. “Pull yourself together, ‘Angel’s Scent’ still needs you. We just lost one deal; it’s not the end of the world!”

He tilted his head slightly to take a glance at her, and then returned to his original position.

Moses sighed heavily. “I didn’t expect Flora to turn out like this. I’m sorry, Gallen. I failed to guide her to the correct route.”

“But Gallen,” Ada looked at him and paused. “Seriously, I don’t think Flora is that bad, she is just blinded by her irrationalities temporary. She will come to her senses one day.”

“Would she?” Moses overruled her sentence furiously. “She sold us out!”

“Why can’t you have more confidence in your own sister? We’re the only ones she has now.” Ada defended her best friend.

“No! She still has that Bowie Lam.” Moses turned his head and looked at Gallen again. “But we’re the only ones Gallen has now.”

“I’m alive and kicking, you all can stop worrying about me…” Gallen spoke without changing his position and tone.

“Gallen, have you any idea where Flora might be?” Maggie implored again.

“She sped out like an arrow, I can’t find her.”

“Yes, I remembered I saw her running out of your office too, what happened exactly?” Jessica knitted her browns worriedly and asked.

“I just said I had something to tell her but there was a call so I asked her to hold on, but shortly she behaves weirdly… I mean… her expression changes, and then she rushed out without a word.” Gallen sat up and spoke.

“That’s weird…” Ada felt uneasy.

“What’s wrong?” Jessica and Gallen spoke in unison. Louis eyed them carefully, feeling a bit of isolated.

“Based on my understanding of Flora, she must be regretting her decision then. If I’m not wrong, she must have went to look for Bowie.” Ada declared to the group.

“How did you say that?” Gallen asked.

“Yes, what makes you so sure?” Jessica added. Louis found himself being jealous again.

“If she had insisted that her decision was right,” Ada held her breath and continued. “Firstly, she would have been prepared how to face you, and that she will not have to run away.”

“Uh huh…” Gallen nods his head in agreement.

“Secondly,” Ada took a little pause.

“Secondly what?” Moses interrupted.

“Flora had always been relatively weak. Although she may seem strong, but most of the time she’s just putting up a strong front. You know that best, Gallen.” She looked at him while he remained in his thinking.

“So?” Moses remained perplexed.

“I am sure she must have been instigated by that Bowie Lam to do all these. And now she is regretting it either because she is guilty or…” She hesitated.

Gallen turned his head back and waited for her answer.

She continued. “Or she might have invoked real feelings for you all these while. And now she is looking up Bowie Lam for a confrontation.”

“Is that possible?” Gallen questioned, but he had answered it himself. “There is no news of her till now.”

“Should we call the police?” Jessica was worried about Gallen.

“But it’s not even 12 hours that she’s missing. And what can you say to the police? That your wife ran away with another man?” Louis sounded a bit unusual, and rude in a particular sense.

“Louis!” Jessica raised her voice slightly at him. She nudged her slightly.

“What’s the matter?” He was indignant. “You people just refuse to accept the fact.”

“Shut up, will you?” Jessica was extremely sensitive towards Gallen’s feelings, ironically neglecting Louis’ jealousy.

“Fine! I’ll make a move first.” He stood up and headed towards the door. Seeing that Jessica had stuck to her position and stayed with Gallen, he stomped out of the house.

“Jess,” Ada gazed worriedly at Jessica. “Are you sure he’ll be alright? He looks angry.”

“Yup, he’ll be. Not a bit sensible at all!” She shook her head and looked at Gallen, lowering her volume. “I’m sorry for what he’s said, Gallen.”

Seeing Jessica’s concern for Gallen, Maggie was rather worried for her cousin, she stood up and excused herself as well.

“Moses,” Gallen turned and looked at the remaining three. “It’s late. You all should go home and have a rest soon. Don’t worry, I’m ok. I just need to be alone.”

“But you look ghastly, do you need…” Moses hasn’t his mind set.

“Nope, I’m really ok.” He forces a smile. “Please leave me alone, ok?”

Ada felt what he meant. “Ok, we’ll visit you again tomorrow.” She grabs Moses’ hand and stood up. “Let’s go. Jess?” She looked at Jessica and signaled her intention.

“You two go ahead. I’ll like to accompany him a while more.” Jessica insisted.

“Ok, bye.” The couple left.

“Why didn’t you leave with him? There’s nothing you can do here.” Gallen spoke in a soft and low voice.

“How can I leave you in such a state?” She places her head on his shoulder slowly. “Do you know it pains me to see you like that? Why must you abandon yourself to fate? Why are you doing this to yourself because of Flora? Again and again! Is she worth your love?”

Gallen pushes her away awkwardly. “Please don’t do this, Jess!”

“Why? Tell me why? Why are you so good to her even when she did you thousands of wrongs?” She was a bit agitated.

“She didn’t! And she won’t! I’m sure she will return to me soon.” He rebuked her and his heart.

“Stop deceiving yourself!” She looked at him furiously. “She won’t! She is gone! Gone forever. She won’t return to you! Face up to reality, Gallen!”

“NO!” He shouted back angrily and gave her a little push, which lands her onto the ground.

She hit her hand against the table and it began to bleed, Gallen rushed to her in guiltiness.

“Are you ok, Jess?” He helped her up, held her injured hand up and used a tissue to wipe off the blooding oozing out from it. “I’ll get you a plaster.” He rushed off and came back with one in 10 seconds.

“Gallen…” She gazed at him lovingly.

He averted her eyes and carried on applying the plaster for her. “It’s done.” He moved away from her.

She shifted herself closer to him, and stole a peck on his cheek. He moved away in surprise. She hugged him tightly.

“Gallen…” She spoke in a tone that almost melted his heart. “Do you know that in this world… there is someone who cares for you, just as much as you care for Flora?”

His heart skipped a beat. He finds himself in a loss, a loss for words, a loss of movement. Jessica releases herself from the hug, and touches his face with her hands, ever so gently. She gazes into his eyes as he gazes into hers. She moves closer to him…

They never noticed someone had opened the door with the keys that created the sound of a dropped pin. The silhouette stood still…
