Chapter 20

Against The Blade Of Honour

Two days passed by. Flora was still missing. Nowhere to be found. This fateful day, ‘Angel’s Scent’ was visited by a bunch of cops.

Two officers went up and flash their passes to Moses, who just stepped out of his office. “We are from Commercial Crime Division, can we speak to Mr. Gallen Lo, please?”

“Gallen?” Moses was shocked.

At the same time, Gallen emerged from his office. “Yes, looking for me?”

“Mr. Lo, you are suspected of doctoring the accounts and engaging in illegal activities, can you make a trip to the station with us?

Jessica went forward in a fluster. “How could it be? You must have made a mistake, sirs!”

“Mr. Lo, this is just a routine questioning, please cooperate.” One of the officers spoke solemnly.

Gallen forces a smile and gave an assuring pat on Jess’ shoulder. “I’ll be alright.”

The two officers went away with him.

“What to do now, Moses?” Jess turned her head and implored him worriedly.

“We’ll call for Lawyer Kong. Let’s make a trip to the station to bail him out.” Moses replied calmly.

At the police station, Lawyer Kong went into the interrogation room with Gallen whereas Moses and Jessica waited outside in anxiety. After an hour, Lawyer Kong came out carrying a solemn look on her face.

Moses and Jessica stood up in anxiety. Jessica spoke before Moses could do so. “How’s Gallen, Lawyer Kong?”

“Don’t worry, I’ve managed to bail him out. He’s just there.” He shifted himself a bit to the right, while Gallen emerged dispiritedly behind him.

“Thanks, Lawyer Kong.” Gallen spoke in an unusually soft manner.

“You’re welcome. I’ll need to go back and study the case in detail. Call me again if they invite you here again.” Said the experienced and matured lawyer in his forties.

“Sure.” Gallen replied.

The lawyer took his leave while Jessica held Gallen’s hand with worries all written over his face. Gallen strokes her hair assuringly. Moses senses something wrong.

It was just another ordinary day at HT, but Maggie and Louis were each feeling distracted and troubled. Maggie’s worries grew more intensive, immensely. She eyed Bowie through the transparent glass, who was talking like normal on the phone. Suddenly, she had a weird feeling. An extremely uneasy one. As Bowie puts down his phone and smiled at her, she could feel the shiver down her spine.

She turned and looked at Louis. He was looking preoccupied in his own work, but she knew he wasn’t concentrating. She knew him well enough to tell that.

“Ah Lok.” She went over and put her hand on his shoulder. “You haven’t patched up with Jess?”

Her stubborn cousin pouted unhappily. “She can’t find any time for me. She had to accompany her dear Gallen, you see!”

She lets out a short chuckle. “My! You’re behaving like a 5-year-old throwing his tantrums when he doesn’t get his favorite toy. Just be more understanding, Gallen needs friends badly by his side at this time.”

She turned and gave Bowie another look, then shifted her attention back to Louis.

“I bet they’re more than friends! I know Jess still loves him!” He declared in an adamant tone.

“I’m meeting the guys at ‘Angel’s Scent’ later, you must come along!” She gave her another pat on the shoulder.

“I don’t think I want to.”

“Didn’t you hear what I said? You MUST go along! Ok, that’s it, no arguing!” She grimaces an angry look.

He smiles and nodded slightly.

She knocked and entered Bowie’s office. “Hi, busy?”

“Uh huh.” He continued typing on his computer without raising his head to look at her.

“Here’s a cup of coffee to perk you up,” She pushed the cup of instant cappuccino to him while he mumbled a thank you and smiled.

“Erm… Maggie,” He continued with what he’s doing and spoke. “Can you please get me my fountain pen? It’s in the pocket of my jacket, over there.”

He points at the hanger which suspends his dark brown jacket nicely on it. She went over and search the right pocket, his fingertips touched something. She drew it out. It was an exquisite earring with little carvings that resembles the shape of butterflies. She was sure it doesn’t belong to her.

“A gift?” She thought for a second, and voids the idea the next. “Impossible! Who would ever give one earring for a gift?” She took a quick glance at Bowie, he was still engrossed in his typing. Without further dithering she dropped the little accessory into her own pocket gingerly, and searched for his fountain pen.

“Got it?” Bowie paused what he’s doing for a while, and diverted his attention to his left.

“Yup, here you go!” She forces a smile while passing the object to Bowie. “Phew! Luckily he didn’t see me!” She thought, feeling relieved.

When Maggie hauled the reluctant Louis into their meeting place, the guys from ‘Angel’s Scent’ were already there. Louis purposely sat a seat away from Jessica. Maggie was anxious to present her new discovery.

“Hey guys, look what I’ve found!” She exclaimed as she flashes the earring that she managed to find in Bowie’s pocket.

“How come you do have Flora’s earring with you?” Gallen sat up and took the earring from her.

“This is Flora’s?” Maggie questioned with her unresolved doubts floating into the air.

“Uh huh. I bought it for her just recently. How come it is with you?” He knits his brown inquiringly. “You saw Flora? Where is she now?”

“Nope, I found this… in Bowie’s jacket just now.”

“How come this is with him? Have they been together?” Moses took a glance at the earring before throwing the question to the floor.

“In what kind of situation will the earring land into his pocket?” Ada enquired the rest.

“Unless…” Gallen was doubtful.

“She purposely did it!” Ada continued and guessed.

“Oh my god! Don’t tell me…” Maggie made a wild guess and covered her mouth.

The rest of them had their minds wandered...

Flora sat silently on her bed in the pathetically small room. She stood up and looked out of the window. Emotions had almost completely engulfed the petite girl. She felt totally lost and helpless, lost in the sea of love…

She thought about 22 October again. That fateful night, how could she ever forget about it? She woke up in the middle of the night, and turned to look at Gallen, who was soundly asleep. She thought of Bowie, and his promises to her. Tears were rolling down from the corners of her eyes. Gallen made a slight stir; she made a swift turn and squeezed the blanket in her hands tightly, before forcing her eyes to close again…

She took out the small-sized Snoopy from her handbag and held it in her palm. 15 December, the day before his birthday…

They were strolling smilingly along the path back to their house, hand in hand.

“Tomorrow will be your birthday, what present do you want?” She sways her hands with his, asking smilingly.

“Hmmm… you should know it.” He grins, then suddenly halted his footsteps.

“What happened?” She stopped and gazed at him perplexedly.

“See what I have got for you!” Gallen grinned and took out something from his shopping bag.

“Oh my god!” She exclaimed out of excitement. “Where did you get this? Awww… my cute Snoopy!” She clutches the plush toy happily into her arms.

“Like it?” He smiles and looks at her.

“Of course!” She exclaimed jubilantly again. “But I haven’t got anything for you!” She looked at him innocently.

He pouts dramatically. “You should know what the best gift for me is.”

“But you haven’t got the one I wanted for me!” She teased him playfully.

“Oh… so you don’t want this one. Fine!” He pretended to be angry, and snapped the toy from her, threatening to throw it down the slope.

“Hey, no! Give it back to me!” She went on tiptoe and tried to grab it back from him.

“Excuse me!” An abrupt voice interrupted them, bumping into Gallen as he ran pass them. The toy fell down the slope.

“Oh no!” She was disappointed at the sight of this. Without further hesitation, Gallen made his way down the steep and slippery slope. “Gall, forget it!” She shouted loudly.

“I’ll get it back for you.” He shouted back without turning back to face her, but continued his way down. She watches him worriedly as he trotted down clumsily to his destination. It was sort of amusing but she couldn’t bring herself to laugh now. Suddenly, he tripped on something and fell flat on the ground. Gosh!

“Gall, are you alright? Gall! Answer me!” She went over the railings and took a further look when he did not reply her.

Then he suddenly stood up and grins at her. She couldn’t contain the amusement and broke out in laughter. His face was all smeared with the wet and brown mud when he landed his face on it. Then he swiftly recovered Snoopy and ran his way up.

“Hey, what are you laughing at?” He pouts again.

She took out a tissue and wiped off the mud for him, while whispering to him. “You’re so silly!”

“Yeah, you always enjoy seeing me making a fool out of myself, don’t you?” He grimaces a sad face.

She chuckled again. “Of course, you are such a fool.”

“Fine!” He places down the Snoopy back into the shopping bag and smear his own hand with the remaining mud on his face.

“Hey, why are you dirtying yourself?”

He grins cheekily. “Because I want to make you a dirty piglet like me.”

She made a quicker response by turning her head and ran away. He chased after her…

She smiled at the flashbacks, then sighed again. Why was she thinking of their past? Why was she thinking of him so much? She knew she misses him. Her heart suffered a twist again.

The door was opened. She turned her head and faces it. Bowie entered and closed the door after them. Then he places a box of food and water down before sitting down and faces her squarely, using his right hand to caress her cheek lightly.

She turned away and stared at him. This was no longer the man she used to fancy. He doesn’t deserve any of her love or liking. She hated him!

“What’s the matter? Throwing a tantrum at me again?” He notices the small toy on her hand. “What? Thinking of him again?”

She quickly hid the small toy behind her, but the agitated Bowie snatched it from her. “Give it back to me!” She shouted at him.

“Why are you still thinking of him? Do you think he will still love you, after what you have done to him?”

She felt a squeeze in her heart, and gave way to her tears uncontrollably. “None of your business! Give that back to me!” She stood up and attempted to snatch it back.

“What’s the point of keeping this when you can’t keep his heart?” He gave the toy back to her while passing her a small stack of photographs. “Now look at this! And see how they are enjoying themselves! He forgot about you long ago! Now only I will love you!”

She brought the photos closer to her. Now this must be a set-up. “You’re lying! These photos are fabricated by you! All these are lies!”

“Do you need to see the negatives? If you do, they are here!” He throws them angrily on the floor.

She refuses to pick them up, while engrossed in her own thinking. “These photos don’t signify anything. Perhaps… perhaps Jess was sad and Gallen just gave her a consoling hug. Perhaps… perhaps their lips just touched each other by accident…” She trusted him as a person, but should she trust her intuition or the photos? She was confused…
