It was all quiet in the house. Nobody was uttering a sound. Now even Bowie was behaving like as if he was dumb. He lands himself on the chair besides Flora’s bed.

Maggie stared at him coldly. “Why are you doing all these? You have attained your goal! HT is already saved! Why are you still doing all these to destroy yourself, and others? Do you really have to go this far, Bowie? Tell me! TELL ME!”

“I am not resigned to this! Why? Why must I lose to Gallen Lo every time? Why must he win me each time? He got evidence against me, I can’t let him go!” Bowie finally spoke up, looking helplessly at Maggie, but his expression was no longer that of an evil one. He just couldn’t face Maggie with that kind of face, he just couldn’t do it!

Maggie smirks a chuckle dramatically. “Evidence? What evidence can he possibly have? I bet he’s fooling you, Bowie!”

“How do you know?” Bowie sat up and looked at her.

“If he really got the evidence, he’ll hand it to the police and let them send a platoon in search for you ages ago, why must he take a risk and fight with a loony like you?” She almost screamed out. “Now let them go, Bowie! I’ve already inform the police, you can’t escape!”

Bowie laughs out loudly, then position himself on the ground, pressing onto his hair with both of his hands, hanging his head low and closes his eyes in desperateness. “In the end, I’m still the loser!”

“Now let Gallen go! You have done enough to hurt him, you know it yourself best! Wake up Bowie! It’s never too late to repent!” Bowie kept quiet, and Maggie proceeded to untie Gallen and conveniently poured the pail of water outside the house onto him. Maggie went to untie Jessica and Louis, but was stopped by Bowie.

“Wait! Don’t release these two busybodies first!”

“Bowie!” Maggie cried out.

“I said wait!” He insisted.

The flickering lights suddenly went off, Bowie swiftly lighted an oil lamp by the bed.

Louis held on tightly to Jessica, while Gallen rushed to Flora and squeezes her hands. He caresses her pale face lovingly and ever so gently, looking deeply into her eyes. She tried her best and opened her eyes to gaze back at him. Thousands of words become unspeakable between them. He pulled out the conjugal knot from his pocket.

“Do you still remember this?” He held the red knot steadily before her, while not allowing his eyes to leave hers for a second.

“Of course,” She spoke tearingly. “I remember every single detail of our past, and every little moment we share. The places we used to frequent, the things we used to do, and the vows we had. I’m sorry, Gallen. I had always wanted to say this to you. I…” She became speechless again.

He held her up and encircled her tightly into his embrace. She leaned her head closely and exhaustedly onto his chest.

“Silly, I never blamed you, because I know this knot is here to bless us. It will never tear us apart.” Gallen smiled in satisfaction. As long as she was with him, nothing else matters! Nothing would!

“Shut up! Have you two talked enough?” Bowie suddenly yelled out again, and Gallen shifted themselves a little bit further away from him.

The noise from outside that comes a second later had brought both hope and despair respectively to the people in the house.

“Bowie Lam! Please drop your weapons and release the hostages immediately! We have besieged the house and there is no way for you to escape!”

Ada and Moses stood worriedly outside the house behind the platoon a few meters away from the house. “Bowie Lam, let them go!” Moses shouted into the amplifier.

Just then, Bowie panicked and accidentally swept off the oil lamp by the bedside, setting the house ablaze. Gallen carried Flora up and moved towards the other end of the room. Maggie swiftly moved to untie Louis and Jessica. The fire was spreading rapidly, and had almost reached them in a minute.

Louis rushed towards the door, trying to open it, but the knob was heated by the fire, and therefore was scorchingly burning. He tried to kick down the door. Gallen placed Flora down at a corner and joined him. Bowie rushed up and joined in when he couldn’t find the lock to the door.

Just then, a falling pole fell down from above the girls’ head. Maggie and Jessica dodged it just in time. Bowie turned around and lifted his head up. Another burning pole looks really threatening a few metres above Maggie. Indeed he was spot on. The pole gave way and was rushing its way down to Maggie’s head. Bowie halted what he was doing and ran towards her.

There was no time for him to pull her away so Bowie used his own body to shield Maggie from the burning pole. The pole hit him right on his left leg, setting it on fire. Maggie hit his leg hastily to put off the fire.

Gallen and Louis finally managed to knock the door down. Some of the police were rushing to them with pails of water in hand, but it was no use, the fire was not under control. The police could not enter the house as the fire was getting really out of hand, they waited outside for them to run out of the house.

Louis was the first to come out, dragging Jessica along with him. Bowie was injured in the leg and could not move, Maggie insisted on helping him out and refusing to leave.

“Gallen! Please take Maggie now! I beg of you! Please!” Bowie shoved Maggie to Gallen and stared pleadingly into his eyes.

“No, I am not leaving without you!” Maggie insisted.

Gallen cast a quick look at Flora and thought she was relatively safe at the corner of the house. Without second thoughts he carried Maggie and rushed out of the house, handing Maggie to the paramedics who have already arrived.

“Gallen! Please! Please save Bowie!” Maggie implored sincerely. He nodded.

Then he ran back into the house despite the objections and warnings of the police.

To his greatest shock, the fire was almost engulfing the whole house, he quickly pulled out Bowie’s leg under the pole as the latter yelled in pain.

“Go now, quick!” He shouted at Bowie.

“Flora!” Bowie shouted as he witnesses the fire getting closer and closer to them.

Gallen rushes up to Flora, holding him tightly in his arms. Soon, the fire has surrounded them, almost completely.

“Gallen, go without me. You can still escape through the side now!” Flora called out faintly. “No time to waste!”

He turned to look at the dumbstruck Bowie. “What are you doing here? Run! RUN!”

The latter cast another helpless and regretful glance at them before limping out of the house.

“I won’t leave without you! In life or death, we would be together, forever!” He strokes her hair gently and said adamantly.

“Gallen, silly Gallen, why are you so good to me? I can never repay you enough in this lifetime.” Flora places her hands around his neck, as he pulls her and hugs her tighter.

“Then you should repay me in next lifetime, silly. Don’t be afraid, I’m with you. It’ll be over soon”

“No! Why must you sacrifice yourself?” Her face was covered with tears.

“Do you know?” He gazes lovingly into her eyes. “You are the only love of my life, the only meaning to my survival. Life would be worst than death without you. If god would only let us be together this way, then I’ll just have to accept it!!”

“Gallen, I love you! We will never be apart again!” She presses his hands tightly with hers. He tucks the conjugal knot into their hands.

“Till death do us part!” He whispered before they close their eyes and awaiting doom to fall upon them.

Ada and Jessica fainted upon witnessing the fire engulfing the couple, Moses closed his eyes in pain…
