Chapter 4

The Awakening Story

~~I loved you! I trust you! I believed in you! You told me to believe in miracles, I did! But why did you discard me? Why did you choose to forget me? Why did you choose to break my heart?~~

Gallen handed all his work in “Angel’s” over to Moses and Jessica, while he devoted all his time to taking care and accompanying Flora. For days it felt like years, he tried every possible way to wake her up from her sound sleep in her little dreamland. Her favorite movies, music, author, magazines, and him! But it didn’t seem to work. He didn’t give up though, as he was sure if he persists, she would certainly feel it somehow, someday…

Heaven didn’t disappoint a true-hearted lover. On the 12th day of her coma, she started to show signs of awakening… and she did. The doctor was doing a check-up on her when Gallen informed him and now he is waiting impatiently outside the ward with Ada, Moses and Jessica. The doctor came out and he rushed in.

“Flora!” He hugged her tightly into his embrace, only to be pushed away hastily.

He gave her a bewildered look.

“Gor!” She called out as Moses approaches her, and reaches out for his hands. “Who is this person? Why is he so rude?”

Gallen could feel that the slicing of his heart by unfeeling sharp blades filled with enmity. “Flora…” He continued, his voice was trembling. “Don’t be so naughty and play a trick on me again. Do you know how worried I was?” He places his hands on her shoulders only to be rejected heartlessly again.

She pulls her brother closer to her and kept quiet. Gallen knew. He knew she wasn’t pulling his leg. His heart and body was now falling apart.

“I’m your hubby, don’t you remember, Flora?”

“I don’t have a hubby, you’re crazy!”

Moses interjected. “Flora, he is telling the truth! Don’t you remember him at all, Flora?”

“When on earth did I get married, Gor?”

“A year ago!” Moses exclaimed.

“One year and 11 days.” Gallen supplemented.

“Ada…” She turned to her left and looked at her.

Ada nods her head. “They are telling the truth, Flora!”

“But I don’t remember anything about what you’ve said!” She could only feel a splitting headache when she tries hard to bring back her memories, if they exist at all.

Upon her discharge from the hospital 2 days later, Flora moved back to stay with Ada like she did more than one year ago. Ada, Moses and Jessica tried to create opportunity for her to be with Gallen so he could brief her about their past but she shown stubborn resistance to Gallen. Every time they were alone, she would keep an appropriate distance from him intentionally. Gallen felt hurt, utterly shattered, to see his beloved wife ignoring him and treating him not only like a stranger, but almost a monster. Was this instinct? He seriously couldn’t figure out.

Upon her recuperation a week later, she was advised to go back to work by Ada and Moses, the only two person familiar in her memory. Nonetheless, she still loathed the idea of having anything personal to do with Gallen. She just don’t feel like seeing him, sometimes. And Gallen had perfect knowledge of it, yet refusing to acknowledge the full facts. He didn’t want to force her, as he knows if he does, she might just leave the company, and be no longer within his sight.

He practically did everything, he played her the video they took on their wedding day, their honeymoon, their trip and all the photos they had took for the past year or so. Disappointedly she displayed no signs of recognizing them.

He waited patiently, day by day. But fate seems too cruel to the devoted lover. Weeks and weeks passed. By a twist of fate, Flora decided to quit and join another company. He didn’t know what her purpose was, but perhaps she really didn’t want to see him again. On that fateful day she entered his office with a solemn face.

“Yes, Flora?” Gallen stood up and looked at her.

She hands over a white envelope, and continued. “This is my resignation letter…” She pauses. “And I would like to talk to you about us…”

A tinge of hope was shown on Gallen’s face, only to be replaced by disappointment and heartbreaking after her words.

“I think we should arrange a day and meet at the lawyer’s to sign the divorce papers…” She said calmly.

“Flora… listen to me…” His voice was trembling and his whole body practically was. He then drew the curtains down. “Can’t you just give me a bit more time? I’m sure you’ll remember me, you’ll remember our past, and all our happy moments together!” He was getting too emotional, and putting his hands on her shoulders. “Why? Why are you so cruel to me? You know how much I love you!” He leaned forward and hugged her tightly.

She struggled to break free but he held her hands tightly.

“I’m sorry, it had been 2 months, Gallen!” She took a deep breath and continued. “If I really love you that much then I would have remembered everything about us, but the fact is I don’t!” She looked into his eyes. “I have no feelings for you, anymore, if I did in the past. So, please let go of me.”

He loosens his hand, while she shakes off hers from his and walked out, leaving the devastated Gallen staring into space. At that fateful moment, he felt as if he was abandoned by the whole world, his heart was dissolved, and its essence vapor into the thin air.

“Why did you do that, Flora? He really love you very much, and you do love him very much too!” Ada expressed her objection the moment she stepped into the house with Moses.

“But the fact is I don’t now! The memories I have was narrated by you people, and I have not even the slightest idea of it! I don’t remember how we love each other in the past, I don’t!” She was relatively agitated. “And do you understand how I feel these 2 months? The look in his eyes, they made me feel as if I owe him something, and I can’t take it anymore!”

“And do you know how he feels?” Moses interrupted. “For a man who love his wife so much, who is willing to give up everything just for her… and she is not only not reciprocating but breaking his heart time and again. Why must you…”

She interjected firmly. “So I guess that’s the best solution! So I won’t bring him anymore heartbreaking. My mind is set, and I won’t change it.” With that she went straight into her room and shut the door.

Ada and Moses looked at each other helplessly. They have no idea what could be done to help the poor Gallen now.

“Ah Yee, a new colleague will be joining us tomorrow!” Louis said as he approaches Maggie. “And I heard she was personally hired by Bowie. I think they are acquaintances or what…”

“So what’s so special about that?” Maggie didn’t quite get him.

“Well, I thought she must be someone special for Bowie to recruit her personally. I mean… perhaps… she is his girlfriend…” He lowered his volume, scrutinizing for any reactions on her face.

“Perhaps, but I have no right to interfere in his personal affairs!” She tried to act normal.

“Are you sure?”

She forces a smile and nods her head. “Don’t be such a nosey parker, get back with your work!” She shoved him away.

The next day Maggie was anxious to know who this girl was. The clock ticked slowly. It was soon eight… half past eight… nine…, and yet there were still no signs of the new colleague. Just as she was wondering, a girl dressed in white appeared and approached the reception. She then walked straight into Bowie’s room.

“Wow, is that our new colleague? She’s really pretty! I would say Bowie certainly have good taste!” Louis teased purposely.

“How could you be sure she is his girlfriend?” Maggie almost flared up.

“Well, I couldn’t be sure of that but I’m sure someone is being jealous here.”

Maggie was dumbstruck. He was right. She could feel the jealously inside her even if she tried hard to suppress it. She couldn’t concentrate on her work but instead was focusing her attention on that girl, as she walks elegantly out of Bowie’s office. The way she was dressed, the way she carries herself, Maggie could feel her inferiority complex had conquered her as her little pride collapsed. Louis heaved a helpless sigh.

Who is the girl who had defeated Maggie to such an extent? And will Flora really divorce Gallen?
