Chapter 6

A Kindred Spirit

~~Do you know something? It pains me to see you in this state. I don't know what more I can do for you, but I’ll try my best anyway. Hope you pull yourself together soon…~~

Jessica was having lunch with Moses in her favorite restaurant. Ada arrived.

“Hi, Jessica,” Ada waved as she walks towards them. “So sorry for being late, need to perfect some dance steps…” She sat down and sips a mouthful of water.

“I understand, you must be very busy right now. Moses mentioned that there is a competition up soon, right?” Jessica smiled politely.

“Yup,” She nods her head sweetly. “It’s my break.”

“Congratulations in advance!” Jessica spoke sincerely.

“How do you know she’ll succeed for sure?” Moses teased.

“Hey…” Ada stared at him. He gave a silly smirk.

“You should dote on your fiancée, and not bully her, Moses!” Jessica shook her head.

“Precisely!” Ada pouted.

Moses grinned, and stared into space for a few seconds.

“What’s wrong?” Ada inquired curiously.

“Gallen?” Jessica tried to guess. Moses threw her a glance and sighed. “I’m so worried about him too! Last week he threw all the work to you and this week he is burying himself into endless work…” She could feel her own grief in her words.

“And he doesn’t even want to come out and have lunch. Guess we’ll have a takeaway for him.” Moses added.

“I think we should do something for him, he can’t carry on like this!” Ada said firmly.

“What can we do?” Moses and Jessica spoke in unison.

“I have no idea, but you two try to talk to Gallen, while I’ll keep an eye on Flora!” She suggested.

“Yup, that Bowie Lam!” Moses realized. “But how could you do so? Join the company? Impossible!”

“I have no idea too…” She sighed, and soon spotted a familiar figure. “That man… I think I saw him in HT…” She tried to recall. “I think he works there…”

Another girl walked in to join the man. “That girl!” Ada exclaimed.

“What?” Moses wondered bemusedly.

“She was staring at me, with some kind of… unfriendliness when I was talking with Bowie Lam that day…” She tried to refresh her memory. “And the man was beside her.”

“Could she be that Bowie Lam’s girlfriend?” Jessica turned on her super antenna and made a wild guess.

“Possible…” Ada looked up to her.

“I’ve got an idea!” Jessica said confidently as she snaps her fingers.

Moses and Ada looked at each other in bewilderment.

After knocking for the day, Jessica went to HT to carry out her plan. Gingerly, she followed Maggie from HT to McDonald’s. Then she carried out her plan…

Louis heaved a long sigh.

“What’s up? Or are you bored having dinner with me constantly? Then get yourself a girlfriend, brother!” Maggie smiled teasingly.

“I think I should get you a boyfriend first!” Louis continued. “I’m worried for you, sis… Bowie seems to fancy that new girl in HT…”

“It’s…” She was interrupted by a sudden intruder who had tripped and her cola was splashed onto Maggie’s suit.

“I’m sorry, really sorry…” Jessica said as she took out a tissue for her. “I’ll compensate you for that, Miss.”

Louis eyed the girl grinningly, and spoke up. “It’s very expensive , Miss. Are you sure you can afford it?” He teased.

“And how expensive will it be?” She asked with a smile.

“A hundred and nine thousand, seven hundred dollars!” He tried to act serious.

“Crazy! You might as well go and rob a bank!” Jessica commented, rolling her eyes off him.

“I’m sorry Miss, he’s just kidding.” Maggie gave Louis a slight kick.

Jessica put on her smile and faced her. “I should be the one apologizing, I dirtied your suit! But I need to rush now, can you give me your name and contact number so I can look for you later and compensate you for the suit?”

“It’s ok, I can always wash it.” Maggie said smilingly.

“What if I insist?” Jessica pauses and continues. “I don’t like owing debts…”

“Emmm… ok then…” She wrote her contact number on a piece of paper and gave it to Jessica. “I’m Maggie.”

“And I’m Louis!” Louis butted. “Her cousin.”

“Ok, thanks… And I’m Jessica, you can call me Jess...” Jessica flash them a smile. “I’ll contact you ASAP, see you!”

Louis utters a soft ‘goodbye’ while Maggie pretends to clear her throat.

He turns and looks at her. “What?”

“What?” She grinned cheekily.

“What are you thinking of?”

“Just what you are thinking right now… Jessica is quite pretty, isn’t she? And someone seems to be eyeing her from head to toe just now…” She teased.

“You better worry for yourself!” He rebuked. “Your Bowie is taking action, and you’re still so nonchalant. Soon, he’ll win Flora over… and I’ll have to extend my greatest sympathies to you…”

Maggie kept quiet and looked at him, both of them deep in thoughts…

The next morning Jessica sat at her desk and stared into space. Not long after he was approached by Moses. He gave her a knock on her table.

“Yes, Moses?” She snaps out and looked up at him.

“Why are you in a daze? And how’s your plan going?” He asked.

“Smoothly. I’ll be meeting Maggie tonight for dinner.” She answered confidently.

“Maggie? The girl who stared at Ada when she went to HT? So you’re meeting her…” He nods his head.

“And perhaps that lecher will tag along!” She mumbled.

“Did I heard ‘Lecher’?” Moses looked at her squarely.

“Nope. You’ve heard wrongly.” She replied swiftly.

“Oh… perhaps… I’ll get back to my work then…” Moses then walked away.

The thought of the look in Louis’ eyes reminded Jessica of Gallen. She still remembered vividly the small misunderstanding she and Flora had of Gallen. Jessica had joined the company just a month before Flora did. Gallen’s charm had sure worked on her. He had been especially nice and attentive towards her, to an extent that she almost mistook his meticulousness for love. But Flora had to take a fraction of the blame too, in fact, a great one. She was the one who told her that Gallen had intentionally molested her because he was interested in her. She had almost suffered from insomnia over her words.

In the end, it turned out to be a misunderstanding. A beautiful misunderstanding. The one he fancies turns out to be the one calling him lecher. She still remembered the little trick Flora had played on Gallen. She somehow felt a squeeze in her heart upon seeing Gallen falling from the chair that second. But her little ego told her to display a facade of indifference.

Not long after that Gallen called her into the office and explained everything to her. She believed him. Somehow she could feel his sincerity beneath his words. The look in his eyes, it had implored her to believe him desperately, and she did. Not only she did so. When Moses requested her to help explaining to Flora, she agreed without further doubt.

Not long after that, Gallen got together with Flora. And poor Jessica could almost hear her own heart breaking. Nonetheless, she still helped them patch up whenever Flora throws her little tantrums at Gallen. Now that things have came to such a situation, she should naturally feel happy, as she now stands a chance with Gallen. But she didn’t, in fact she felt horrible seeing Gallen in such a state. He couldn’t concentrate, make careless mistakes that were 10 times sillier than what Flora had did, he is practically emotionless, like a living zombie. And that hurt her. It did!

Who is the selfless one here actually? Jessica? *sighs*
