Chapter 1

Prologue

PROLOGUE (Four years ago):

Charmaine walked hesitantly into the Club. She didn’t want to come and she knew she shouldn’t but she needed to know the truth. She stepped into the dark, smoky room and it took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust. When she was able to see clearly through the haze, she walked up to the bartender. He was talking to a couple and was performing some sort of trick for them that involved a tumbler, shot glasses and a bottle of tequila. The couple laughed when he was done and merrily dropped off a generous tip. Charmaine waited patiently for the bartender to look her way. When he did, she gave him a friendly smile. “Tonight must be my lucky night,” he said after a whistle. “What would you like beautiful?”

Charmaine looked at him uncertainly, “Do you know where Raymond is?”

The sparkle in the bartender’s eyes intensified at the mention of Raymond’s name. He looked at Charmaine, “You’re one of his girls?”

Charmaine didn’t reply but merely stood waiting for her answer. The bartender looked her from head to toe, thinking that she was different from the others. He lifted his hand, and with his forefinger pointed at a private room across the dance floor. “He’s in there drinking.”

Charmaine managed a weak smile and headed towards the room. Through the short walk, she prayed that the text message that she got was only a joke. Raymond would never cheat on her, would he? When she got to the door she didn’t walk in. She took out her cell phone and scrolled down to the message that she got only thirty minutes ago. She re-read the message: ‘Raymond is with another woman at Nightlife Bar.’ Replacing the phone into her bag, she opened the door slightly and looked in. The sight before her made her stomach clench tightly and her heart drop. Raymond was sprawled across the sofa with a woman lying half naked on top of him. What’s worse was that his hands were all over her and his mouth was running kisses along her face.

“Excuse me Miss but you shouldn’t be here,” a voice said loudly next to her. Raymond and the woman heard the commotion and looked up. Raymond froze seeing Charmaine standing at the door, eyes huge with unshed tears. With his heart pounding he called out softly to her, “Charmaine.” Charmaine stared at him, unable to move. The hurt crushing her so fast and hard that she gasped for breath. Raymond remembered the woman on top of him and rudely pushed her off but it was too late. With those seconds that he took to get up, Charmaine had already left.

Raymond made to chase after her but he felt dizzy. He had too much to drink, he realized belatedly. Holding his aching head he sat back down on the sofa. The woman, whom he had been entangled with just moments ago, slithered back against him. He held her off with an arm, and shouted, “Leave!”

Terrified at his change of mood, the woman scurried out the door as the bartender walked in. “Am I missing out on something?” Ron asked as he sat down next to Raymond and propped his feet on the table.

“My head hurts like hell,” Raymond whined as he lowered his head. He didn’t want Ron to see the wetness spooling in his eyes.

Ron slapped Raymond on the knee, “Who was that chick that came in just now looking for you? She was awesome to look at!”

Raymond’s voice took on an edge as he stated in a low voice, “None of your business.”

Ron laughed as he continued to look at the back of Raymond’s head thinking that his friend was acting weird tonight. It’s not as if this was the first time he got caught cheating by his girlfriends. Raymond would usually laugh about it afterwards. Ron suddenly remembered the face of the woman who came looking for Raymond. He recalled her appearance as being different from the rest. She had an untouched innocence about her. Tapping Raymond on the shoulder, he asked, “Was that Charmaine?”

Raymond closed his eyes and leaned back against the sofa. His silence told Ron that his assumption was correct. Picking up two bottles of beers he shoved one against Raymond’s chest. When Raymond opened his eyes and took the beer, Ron said, “Cheer up! We’re going places and there are plenty of women out there. In no time, we’ll have everything that we’ve always wanted.”

Raymond looked at Ron and grimly said, “Then why do I feel as if I lost the most important thing in my life?”
