~Running Away~

Chapter One ‘Running Away’

‘I can’t believe you don’t trust me enough to let me make my own decision!’ Charlene Velcois yelled at her father.

She was petite woman, but even with her miniature body she still had a very nice shapely figure. She was dressed in smart attire. She wore a black DKNY two-piece suit with a visible red blouse underneath. Her shoulder length auburn hair was tied up with a clip. Some loose strands were out around her round but thin face. She had a pale face with a hint of rose-coloured cheeks. Her big round chocolate eyes were filled with fury.

Charlene had just barged into his office angrily. She had learned that her father had made her job easy. She worked downstairs at his company as a secretary and she realising that she wasn’t doing much of the work. Her father hired someone else to do the job that she was meant to do. She was having the job easy and she didn’t want that. He didn’t like the fact that she wanted to work and this is once again another same old argument.

‘You’re not old enough to know what decision to make!’ her father, Patrick Velcois, yelled back. He wasn't a weak old man but their were hints of grey on his coffee-brown hair. Unlike his daughter he was a tall man. He grew a short ganger beard. He too was dressed smartly. ‘I am only doing what’s best for you!’

‘What’s best for me?’ she spat in disgust. ‘You make my life so easy I don’t even know what life is!’

‘You are my only child and my princess. I don’t want you to work if I have the money,’ he said lowering his voice.

‘I’m 21 years old! I am old enough to do as I please,’ she yelled getting frustrated every second that went by. ‘I want you to tell those body guards of yours to stay away from me.’

‘Is every argument going to be the same?’ Patrick sighed. He sat down on his desk and touched his forehead.

‘Don’t think that you can use emotional blackmail on me,’ she told him unconvinced at his act. ‘It worked once but the same things never gets me twice.’

‘That’s enough out of you,’ he shouted losing his temper that he tried to control. ‘You will do as I ask. Go home and stay there until I return.’

Charlene was going to say something but her father glared at her. She was going to let him win the argument this time. She had plans before she came to her fathers’ office but she was unsure. Now she was officially confident about her plan.

‘Fine,’ she gritted her teeth angrily. She didn’t want it to be like this but she doesn’t have any other choice. ‘I hate you!’ With that she stalked out of the office ignoring everyone’s stares, slamming the door loudly shut and walking out of the building in her heels. She didn’t care if she was the gossip of the office. She always was.

She knew she was being followed, none other than the bodyguards. She had three bodyguards watching over her and she hated it. Daniel, Leo and Mel, the three of them were always watching her every move and telling her father every details of her day to day life. She wanted privacy but she can never get it. She wanted to work for herself but her father wouldn’t allow that. She can’t do anything without her father knowing or knowledge. To Charlene's dismay they would always wear black making them look obvious to everyone. and they would always wear shades which made it more evident. Who did they think they were? She thought. Men in Black? She gave a loud snort.

She climbed into her red Ferrari. She was so frustrated with her father. He just didn’t understand her, he wouldn’t listen to her and he wouldn’t let her live her life on her own. She screamed letting her frustration out. She didn’t bother looking at who saw her or what they might think of her.

Daniel Wu slipped on his black shades covering his hazelnut brown eyes. He sat behind the drivers side of the black BMW 530xi - The new 5 Series car. He looked at the car mirror that has indispensable role in providing clearer and wider visibility of the road. He combed his jet black hair his fingers. He was a very tall and attractive man in his late twenties. He was the very best at his job, bodyguard. That is how Patrick chose him. He wanted the top bodyguards for his daughter. Even though Daniel tends to be aloofness in his work he can’t help but get emotionally involved without his job knowing.

Daniel was startled by the scream from car in front. He was glad that is was a convertible as he would have wondered why on earth the young woman was screaming about.

Besides him on the passengers seat Mel Chung too was startled as he accidentally dropped the gummy bears on his lap that he had been eating. He was completely different from Daniel. They may be in the same business but Mel’s profession was more of technical. Only he thinks bodyguard is more suitable for him. He was in his early thirties. His hair was slightly long black that was a bit wavy. His eyes were big and dark brown.

‘Watch it!’ Daniel remarked. He loved his dear car like it was his woman.

‘Sorry,’ Mel quickly apologized as he retrieved all the gummy bears. ‘The damn woman startled me!’

‘Doesn’t she always?’ Leo Yan teased from behind. He too was a very good-looking man like the other two. He had his short hair flipped up on the front. He had chestnut brown eyes that he covered with grey contacts. Louis was tall in his late twenties. His profession was bodyguard, protecting others.

‘Hey, I wasn’t the one that got scared when she tried to escape in the mall,’ Mel pointed out.

They all remembered the first time Charlene tried to runaway. She had excused herself to go to the bathroom. The trio stood outside the bathroom for five minutes then decided to go in and check on her since she was taking way too long. Lucky for them she didn’t. They knew she would have if the window was lower and wider. Charlene had opened her mouth when she saw them barge in and had let out a high pitched scream deafening them. It had scarred them three for life being caught in a women’s toilet.

'Don't remind me,' Daniel groaned. 'I prefer to forget that incident.'

'Me too,' Mel agreed solemnly.

Few minutes went by when Charlene finally calmed down. She started the car and drove home with the BMW close behind.

Charlene was running away from home. That was her plan. She got her bag that she packed overnight. She got out the hired car keys from the bag. She quickly took a short shower and dressed on something simple, a baby blue T-shirt and jeans. She put on her denim jacket and a baseball cap. She gave her room one last look before closing the door behind her. She had to get out of the mansion without the bodyguards finding out.

She walked to the back garden quietly and on alert. Daniel was in the mansion, Mel was at the front and Leo was watching the back. She would get caught if she went through the front. So she planned to take the back. She watched Leo who was sitting on the patio puffing a cigarette. She tiptoed out of the kitchen door, closing the door quietly behind her, to the maze. Her father thought it was nice for the garden. She thought it was nice to get yourself lost in. But now she knew the maze by heart. She walked confidently through the maze and came to a dead end. She walked close to the bush and saw that the hole was still there. Far away you couldn’t see it but close enough you could.

She crawled through the hole and managed to get out. She let out a deep breath, relieved for not getting caught. She had ten minutes before Daniel would go to her room to check up on her. She hurried down the alleyway that she came to from the hole and saw the hired car. She rapidly went inside and started the engine. She had to get out of there.

Charlene was sweating. She had planned this for years and she was finally going with it. She just hoped she didn’t get caught.

She drove away just when in the mansion Daniel opened her bedroom door. Daniel was doing his usual check up to see if she’s not doing anything stupid. She sometimes did things to get attention. He felt sorry for her. She was always stuck at home and had no friends at all except that girl that dared to befriend her.

He checked up on the young woman just in case. It was part of his job to know everyone Charlene talks to. Vicki Zhou was the young woman’s name. She was a great lady with a good heart but she influences Charlene to go against her fathers’ wishes. He knew that Charlene always backed Vicki up when her father would blame it on her.

He walked inside the room and checked if she was in the en suite bathroom since she’s not in the room. He felt a little tingle like a six sense that she wasn’t here. He tapped on the closed door. After a minute when there was no answer he opened the door to find it empty. He got a feeling that she was running away.

‘Mel, Leo!’ he yelled down the communicator.

‘What is it Dan?’ Leo groaned tiredly.

‘It’s Charlene, she’s not in her room and I’ve got a gut feeling that she’s doing a runner,’ he informed them.

‘Shit!’ Mel barked. ‘That wrench!’

‘Why does she make us chase her?’ Leo whined.

‘Split up and find her!’ Daniel ordered desperately. He was sure they were going to get an earful from Patrick.

Leo was looking in the back for anything. Mel went out and drove around to find her thinking she’s on foot. Daniel checked the mansion upside down for any clues at where she was going wishing she left something behind.

The whole day went with them looking for her until Patrick came home. Parick strode up to Daniel who was the only one home.

‘Where is that daughter of mine?’ he asked.

Daniel hesitated. He didn’t know how to say it. ‘She’s gone,’ he told him.

‘Gone where?’ Patrick was about to go upstairs to have a chat with his daughter. He didn’t want her to be angry with him. He was really stricken that she said she hated him.

‘She ran away,’ Daniel said sadly.

‘What!’ he roared. Daniel braced himself for what he was going to get. He just hoped that the other two were going to get her.
