Chapter Sixteen ‘Just Friends’

So what is she going to do? She asked herself more than half an hour later when they had finished a silent meal. She was bound to give in any second. Edison’s presence is making her pulse set off high. She really had to stop taking glimpse his way. It only made her worse.

Edison was waiting for the right moment to come before bringing up the question. He was certain that she really liked him. The evidence? A minute won’t go by without her glimpsing his way. Then when she does she would blush. What else could he need to make himself convinced?

‘Edison...’

‘Charlene....’

Both of the spoke at the same time then stopped and stared at each other.

‘You go first,’ Edison offered.

‘No, you go first,’ she insisted.

Edison sighed. ‘Okay. Charlene, I’m really sorry about what I said yesterday.’

Charlene kept quiet. She was debating in her mind if she should let him know that she forgave him or not. Looking at him all upset made her heart ache. But knowing that even if they do make up they would eventually break up made her heart squeeze painfully. Edison was the best thing that ever happened to her since the day she ran away. She was devastated inside when he told her about his revenge towards her father. What will happen when he finds out she’s the daughter of Patrick Velcois? Would he change his feelings towards her?

She didn’t want to take the chance to be heart broken.

‘I want to tell you about Patrick Velcois,’ Edison began

Charlene stopped him. ‘I don’t want to know.’

‘Charlene, please,’ he pleaded. ‘Don’t be like this. Let me explain.’

‘I don’t want to know, Edison,’ she said. ‘When the time comes you’d tell I know.’

Edison opened his mouth. Whatever he was going to say was cut off by the cell phone ringing. ‘I’m sorry. I have to take this.’

Charlene nodded.

Edison took out his phone and punched the green button to answer it. ‘Hello, Nic,’ he said over the phone.

‘Hey boss,’ Nicholas said.

‘Is he willing to agree with the meeting?’

There was a few seconds silent. ‘Mr. Velcois is not taking any meeting from anyone.’

‘Why?’ Edison asked, frowning.

‘His daughter apparently ran away and his trying very hard to find her.’

‘His daughter ran away?’

Charlene stiffened upon hearing that. She was positive they were talking about her.

‘Yes.’

‘I never thought that he really had a daughter,’ Edison admitted. ‘I just assumed that people talk. I mean never did I ever hear of her in the newspaper nor seen her there.’

That’s because my dad made sure of that, Charlene wanted to say out loud. The only solution he had was to lock me up in the big house of his. I had no other option but to runaway.

‘Well, Mr. Velcois is very upset these past few weeks. He hasn’t come to work for two weeks now.’

Charlene heard the whole thing Nicholas was saying. After all the volume to his phone was loud. She didn’t know what to react to that. Does this mean my father is really upset that I ran away? Did I do the wrong thing?

‘Did you do what wrong?’ Edison asked.

It took her few seconds before his words registered in her head. She said the last question out loud.

‘Did I do what wrong?’ Nicholas asked.

‘Not you. Hold on a second,’ Edison covered the mouth piece with the palm of his hand and looked over at her. ‘Is something wrong?’

Charlene shook her head quickly. ‘Nothings wrong. I’m just thinking of something.’

He didn’t look convinced. She was glad that he didn’t pursue the conversation. He uncovered the mouth piece. ‘Well, just keep trying. She can’t be gone that long. He has people that I know for sure.’

‘Okay, boss, see you back at work.’

Nicholas rang off. Edison pocketed his cell phone and turned his attention fully on Charlene. ‘So, where were we?’

Charlene shrugged her shoulders. She forgot herself. She was too busy thinking of her father. Just because he locked her away from publics eye doesn’t mean she didn’t love him nor didn’t he love her. The rich life was complicated and she wished she didn’t have anything to do with it. Every day she would wish for a normal life. A life that doesn’t revolve around money. A life with her father where work doesn’t mean a thing to him.

‘Weren’t we talking about Patrick Velcois?’

‘No, we weren’t,’ she said.

Edison leaned forward. ‘Charlene, is there no chance of you forgiving me?’

Charlene took a deep breath. ‘I already did,’ she admitted quietly.

Edison looked puzzled. ‘Then why won’t you let things be back to normal?’

Charlene closed her eyes. She didn’t want to do this. She opened her eyes. ‘Because I don’t want to have a relationship with you,’ she answered.

Edison let the words sink in slowly. If only she knew how the word stabbed him in his heart. ‘Why not?’ he whispered.

‘I’m willing to be your friend. Just friends.’

‘Just friends,’ he repeated.

‘That’s all I can do. If that’s not what you want then…’

‘No,’ he quickly said. ‘I want to be your friend. It’s not what I want but I want you in my life. I realised that I like you too much to lose you.’

Charlene nearly choked up her tears. She forced them in. ‘Urm… I got to go now.’ She pushed her chair back and stood up.

‘I’ll make sure the puppy is cared for while you’re working.’

Charlene nodded. She didn’t trust her voice. If she stayed any longer she would be in tears. She waved goodbye rejecting his offer to take her back. She wanted to walk. She needed a breath of fresh air. This was really hard.

She fell in love with Edison Chen.

No! That can’t be true. It couldn’t possibly be love. How could she love someone she can’t be with? Charlene got out of the restaurant. She inhaled deeply.

She can do it. She can be friends with Edison. How hard can it be? But the second she thought it she knew it wouldn’t be easy.

Edison sat there after she left lost in thoughts. Why did this have to happen to him? He thought he met the right woman and now all she wants is to be his friend. He wasn’t sure if he could be her friend. He wanted to be more than that.

He fell in love with Charlene Choi.

He knew it the second she kissed him. But he had mistaken it by lust. Yes she was weird when he first met her in his limo. It was like love at first kiss. If that made sense.

He wondered how the days of their friendship would be like. Would there be any kisses involved? He couldn’t help but think. All he could think of was her kisses. Do friends do kiss? He grimaced at the answer. No, they don’t in the way he was implying.

Edison waved to the waiter for the bill.
