Chapter 23

~Caught~

Chapter Twenty-Three ‘Caught'

Mel leaned back on the chair. He was waiting for the final bit to be transferred to his laptop. All the information on the private jets would be transferring to him from 2 months ago. It was illegal but that was their last option and their last hope. It was nearly two months that they lost Charlene.

Leo had nothing better to do than watch the television. He lay on the bed while he watched.

Mel would have complained but he couldn’t be asked. In seconds they would find out the owner of the aeroplane. Ed Is On had been written on the plane. It wouldn’t be hard to find the owner.

Mel stared at the screen. 97%... 98%... 99%...100%

Automatically the file downloaded into his laptop and sprung open for him to see. Lots of names came up. He scrolled down the page looking for the one particular name. He found it nearly at the end of the list.

‘Ed Is On was owned by Edison Chen,’ he read out loud.

‘Did you just say Edison Chen?’ Leo asked obviously distracted now. He switched off the television and sat up.

‘Yes,’ Mel replied. His eyes narrowed. ‘He’s the guy Charlene went off with on the plane. Do you know him?’

‘Of course! He’s very wealthy and well known. Rumour has it that he’s been trying to buy Velcois Enterprise out,’ Leo answered.

Mel gaped at him. For the first time since he worked with Leo he actually sounded professional. ‘Wow! And I thought you were just dumb!’

Leo gasped. ‘I take offence!’

‘Whatever,’ Mel waved his hands dismissing him. ‘Go find Daniel and bring him back.’

Leo groaned. ‘He’ll come back.’

Mel shook his head. He was back to moaning again.

Edison sat behind his desk. He could not recall how he got in his office. He stared at the phone. Should he call her? Then he wondered who was taking care of her. She had no one to take care of her. After Saturday night he didn’t think she would want him near her.

Maybe he should call her. So his mind could rest in how she’s doing.

Edison combed his hair back using his fingers. He straightened his tie. He checked himself on the mirror that was hanging at the side wall. He looked good enough, he thought. Then he thought why he was actually bothered. He wasn’t seeing her face-to-face. He was phoning her!

He picked up the receiver and dialled her number to her motel. It kept ringing with no answer. She must be a sleep, he told himself. He then thought she might be taking time to get to the phone. So he tried once more. A knock came on the door. Edison quickly slammed the receiver down and looked up.

‘Come in,’ he called out.

The door opened. Nicholas entered with a smug look. He slumped back on the chair opposite Edison. He made himself comfortable putting his legs up on the desk and crossed it on the ankle. He folded his arms. Then stared at Edison the smug look still plastered on his face. ‘Hello,’ he said.

Edison frowned. What was he so happy about? ‘Hi.’

‘Gillian said that you’re a bit distracted all morning.’

‘I’m fine,’ Edison said.

‘Well, since you’re fine I was wondering why Charlene wasn’t here?’ Nicholas arched an eyebrow.

Edison groaned. Nicholas knew. Great! Just what he wanted! Nicholas teasing him is all he wants right now. ‘She’s ill,’ Edison said not hiding his irritation.

‘Chill, mate. I’m just saying out of politeness. Charlene is a great girl.’

‘I know,’ Edison said unconsciously. He quickly realized what he said and regretted it. ‘She’s a great receptionist.’

‘Yes, that too,’ Nicholas laughed. ‘So, you have a thing for Charlene, eh?’

Edison forehead creased. ‘It’s only a friendly way,’ he said.

‘Okay, I believe you,’ Nicholas said. ‘You won’t mind if I go down now at lunch to see her do you? I mean you have no feelings for her and she’s ill. She needs someone to take care of her since she has no one to.’

Edison sighed. He knew he couldn’t keep anything from him. He was just too annoying. ‘Go there before me and I’ll kill you!’ he threatened.

Nicholas chuckled. ‘I knew it!’

‘You knew what?’ Edison wasn’t giving in that quickly.

‘That you like Charlene!’ he exclaimed.

‘What gave you that idea?’

‘Why do you have to be so mysterious?’

‘I’m not!’ Edison objected. ‘I just like to keep some things to myself.’

‘Like the thing with that girl back in Hong Kong,’ Nicholas pointed out

There was silence. Edison wouldn’t meet Nicholas’s eyes. His eyes narrowed in suspicious. He dropped his legs down on the floor and leaned forward examining Edison's face.

‘Don’t say she’s the same woman!’ Nicholas cried out.

‘I won’t,’ Edison said. He moved his gaze on Nicholas and left it there.

‘You’re kidding me!’ Nicholas jumped up from the chair. Edison got to his feet as well. ‘She’s the woman that kissed you on the limo?’

Edison nodded.

‘And she’s here now.’

Again Edison nodded.

‘Whoa,’ Nicholas said. He wasn’t expecting this now. He stared at Edison. ‘She’s the woman you kept hidden from me?’

‘What can I say? That I let a stranger in my plane because I felt sorry for her?’

‘You let her on your plane?’ Nicholas yelled hysterically.

‘Ssh,’ Edison hissed not wanting Gillian to hear Nicholas. ‘Fine, I’ll tell you the whole story,’ Edison gave in.

Nicholas smiled. ‘Everything? From the beginning and you won’t leave anything behind?’ he asked.

Edison nodded. He sat back down and got comfortable. Nicholas did the same. Edison started from the beginning telling the first meeting with Charlene not leaving anything behind.

While Edison was telling the story, Charlene just stood there motionless behind Daniel waiting for the worse thing to happen, getting caught. Daniel slowly turned around.

‘Mr. Wu,’ the pharmacist said stopping Daniel from turning fully to look behind him.

Charlene let out a sigh of relief. Slowly she backed away towards the door. Unknown to her the door to the pharmacy opened. She turned around only to be face to face with Leo who was panting for air.

Leo didn’t much notice Charlene at first but when realisation stroked his eyes widened. ‘You…!’ he stuttered pointing at her.

Daniel was still talking to the pharmacist who was telling him about the medication. He wanted to tell the man that he knew what to do but he kept his cool.

Leo gaze moved behind her to Daniel. ‘Daniel!’ he shouted.

A squeak escaped from her. She was caught. Goodbye freedom! Hello home prison, she thought miserably. Well, it was good while it lasted. She knew sooner or later she would get caught. Only she wanted it to be later.

Daniel turned some what surprised to hear Leo and relived at the same time. His mouth dropped when he saw Charlene standing there.

‘Say my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me,’ Daniel said to Leo.

‘It’s not. She’s there all right,’ Leo answered proudly. ‘We get to go back home now!’

A tear ran down Charlene’s cheek when she remembered going back meant she won’t be seeing Edison no more. Leo did a double take on the tear.

‘Oh no you don’t!’ he said. ‘We are not going to fall for the tears again!’

Charlene shook her head. ‘It’s okay. I won’t run. I’ll go back home.’

Daniel came and placed a hand over hers. ‘Let’s go to the hotel we’re staying at. There we can talk.’ He glanced at the pharmacist who was blatantly staring at them wondering what was going on. He held onto her hand not sure if this was an act or not. But he wasn’t taking any chance. He guided her back to the hotel.

Mel’s back was turned to the door. He didn’t see Charlene with the other two. ‘I’m glad you’re both back. I did some back ground check on this Edison Chen character…’ He stopped mid sentence when he turned to find Charlene standing with the other two. ‘You got to be kidding me!’

‘Nope!’ Leo said, grinning ear to ear. ‘We found her!’

‘Yes! I’ll get the next plane to Hong Kong.’

‘Wait,’ Daniel stopped the two. He let go of Charlene’s hand and motioned her to sit on the bed. She obeyed, her head bowed low. ‘Let’s find out why our runaway girl made us chase her all the way here.’

Charlene looked up surprised. She stared at Daniel not caring of her tear streaked face.

‘What?’ Mel and Leo cried out in unison. They both stared at Daniel with questioning looks.

Daniel raised an arm quietening them. He looked over at Charlene and raised an eyebrow beckoning her to begin.

Charlene opened her mouth.
