Chapter Twenty-Four 'The Truth'

Edison let out a deep breath when he finished with his story. It was like the weights on his shoulders were lifted when he let out his secret. ‘Man, I feel good!’

Nicholas laughed. ‘It’s your own fault,’ Nicholas badgered. ‘You could have told me the second you landed that plane of yours!’

‘And ruin all the fun?’ Edison raised an eyebrow in mockery.

Nicholas stuck out his tongue. ‘You know all this chatting has made me hungry. Why don’t we go out to eat? My treat,’ he offered.

Edison shook his head. ‘I have somewhere to go remember?’

Nicholas grinned. ‘How can I forget?’

‘I’m going to go now,’ Edison stood up pushing his chair back. He looked at Nicholas and asked for his opinion. ‘So how do I look?’

Nicholas laughed openly. ‘You want to look too good for her?’ Edison stared at him confused at his question. ‘She’s ill, right?’ Edison nodded. ‘Then she’ll look a mess. Now if she looks a mess and you look very nice then… Oh forget it!’

Edison had already left the office not even slightest interested to listen to his best friend. When he got to his car he got in and drove off.

Gillian watched Edison from the window. He had been acting strange lately. She turned to find Nicholas stepping out the office grinning widely.

'Is everything alright?' Gillian asked with a frown. What was going on with Edison? She had to know. And she knew that Nicholas knew.

Nicholas steps faltered hearing her voice. 'Hi,' he smiled. 'Everything’s good. How about you?'

'I'm okay. I'm just worried about Edison. He seems out of it lately.'

Nicholas smiled faded. All she thought about was Edison. ‘He’s gone to see Charlene,’ he whispered sadly.

Gillian froze. ‘Why would he go there for?’

‘Don’t you know?’ Nicholas asked. He was surprised that Charlene didn’t tell Gillian.

‘Know what?’ Gillian voice trembled. She had the feeling she wont like what he was going to say.

‘Edison and Charlene are an item.’

Gillian gasped. ‘What?’

Nicholas regretted even saying anything. What has happened? Gillian really likes Edison? He felt pain jolt through his heart. ‘I don’t think I should have told you anything,’ he mumbled.

‘I can’t believe it,’ she whispered. ‘What kind of friend is she?’

Nicholas did a double take at Gillian. ‘What do you mean? She’s a great friend.’

‘She knew how much I liked Edison and she still went behind my back with him!’ she spat.

Nicholas gulped. He then watched Gillian run out to the elevator and disappear.

‘I think I just made a big mistake,’ he told himself guiltily. Then he dashed down the stairs hoping to find Gillian.

Charlene couldn’t speak. She stared at Daniel. She must have made them angry when she ran away. They must have gone through a lot to find her. She felt so bad now that she just couldn’t give them an explanation because it was not good enough. While she had been having fun they were miserable searching for her the past two months.

‘I…’ she began but it was really hard for her. ‘I’m really sorry. I would not try anything like that anymore. So, you could take me home.’

‘You should be sorry!’ Leo barked.

Daniel glared at him. First it was not allowed since she was their boss’s daughter. Second was, he found Leo annoying. Daniel sneezed. Great! He thought. For a moment he forgot about it. He felt like the bad guy taking her away and locking her up. The two months he was looking for her he had learnt to respect her. She wasn’t the type to want to always live on money and not love. She wasn’t spoilt or a snob. And he understood that she wanted freedom and soon he was going to take it away from her.

‘So, what was it you were doing here?’ Daniel asked. ‘Your father would ask and I’d like to answer with out looking like an idiot.’

Charlene nodded. ‘I was working as a receptionist at Chen’s Enterprise and I’ve been staying at a motel not far from here. About three blocks from here.’

'You have got to be kidding me!' Leo cried out.

Mel let out a deep breath and shook his head as if not believing what Charlene was saying.

Daniel just sneezed.

There was a few moments silence.

‘Mel, get everything packed here,’ Daniel ordered. ‘Leo, call the airport and get the next flight to Hong Kong.’

‘Yes!’ Leo yelled. ‘Hong Kong baby, I’m coming home!’

Daniel ignored the urge to slap Leo at the back of his head. He looked over at Charlene. ‘I’m going to take her back to her place and get her things and I’ll meet you guys back here.

Leo groaned.

‘What?’ Daniel asked.

‘But what if she does a runner again? I don’t want to go to another country. It’s bad enough we’re here.’

‘I don’t think she’s going to run anymore.’ Daniel said. His eyes stayed on Charlene. Charlene had her head down not caring for the piercing looks Leo was giving her way. ‘Let’s go.’

Edison got to the motel room and knocked at the door. He waited patiently for the door to open. He must have waited five minutes with no one answering the door.

What if she’s asleep? He thought. Then negative thoughts got to him. What if something happened to her?

He banged at the door. ‘Charlene! Open the door!’

Charlene stilled. She was standing just a few feet away from her motel room. Daniel stopped and looked at her. She could see Edison banging on the door from where she was standing.

‘What’s wrong? Who is he?’ Daniel asked worriedly.

Charlene shook her head. ‘Nothing. Let’s just go back. I don’t need those stuffs.’

Daniel’s forehead creased. ‘No, since we came we might as well get it.’

Charlene wouldn’t move. ‘We really shouldn’t go.’

‘Charlene,’ Daniel controlled his anger. ‘If you want me to carry you there then I will.’

She slowly walked. Her eyes were on Edison who was still banging on the door.

Something made Edison turn to look at his right. His eyes widened when he saw her. He wasn’t paying attention to her companion. His eyes were fixed on her. He ran to her.

‘What are you doing out? You’re ill, remember. You should be resting,’ he scolded her. He touched her forehead. ‘You’re heated up!’ He wrapped his arm around her neck and headed for the door. ‘Where are your keys?’

She pulled her keys out from her pocket and held it out.

Edison took it from her hand and opened the door.

Daniel got impatient. This guy was obviously blind to see him. He cleared his throat loudly. He gave Edison a glare when he finally saw him.

‘Who are you and what do you want?’ Edison asked. He looked at Charlene.

Charlene looked away.

‘I’m Daniel, her bodyguard.’

Edison frowned. ‘Yeah, yeah, why would she want a bodyguard for?’

Charlene cleared her throat. ‘He is my bodyguard.’

‘What?’ Edison shrieked. ‘How? Why?’

‘My father hired him and two other ones,’ Charlene said. She knew it was the moment of truth time. She wanted to tell him everything before she goes. ‘You see I ran away and they were following me.’

‘You ran away?’

Everything came back to him. He saw Daniel that day outside his limo on the phone. Then he saw him again that day in the café. He knew something was up with Charlene but not this. Why did she runaway?

‘Why did you runaway?’ Edison repeated out loud.

‘It’s a long story.’

‘I can wait,’ he quickly replied.

Charlene took a deep breath. ‘I wasn’t allowed out much nor do anything without his consent. It was like a prison at my place. Vicky, your cousin, is my only friend. My father is strict in what kind of friends I got.’

‘So, you ran away?’

‘Yes,’ she answered. ‘And you should know something else.’ It pained her to say it but she had to say it. Edison waited. ‘My full name is Charlene Choi Velcois.’
