Chapter Twenty Five ‘Strange Man’
A chauffeur opened the back door to the long stretched limousine. A foot swung out first then the head with the rest of the body. A tall handsome man at the age of forty stepped out the limo. His hair was still black but some grey hair can be seen at some angle. His eyes were covered by a thick black sunglass hiding his emotions. He was dressed in charcoal three-piece Italian suit attire. An overcoat was put on his shoulder by the chauffeur.
‘Sir would you like me to go in first?’ the chauffeur asked.
‘No, I would go in. wait here for me,’ the man ordered.
‘But…’ the chauffeur was cut protesting by just one glance from his employer. He bowed guiltily and out of respect.
The man walked passed him and into the building. He went straight up to his destination. He stood outside the door. There seemed to be noises coming from behind the door. It sounded like things bring broken. Then there was a loud growl, from someone, the man assumed not amused. There was then silence. He knocked at the door.
Leo was happily throwing clothes into the suitcase as well as whistling a happy tune.
Mel had asked him to pack while he called the airport. He wondered why Daniel hadn’t asked one of them to call Charlene’s father up. He would have guessed that Patrick had the rights to be the first one to know about his daughter. But he didn’t want to question Daniel. Daniel was a great bodyguard who knew what he was doing. Well he hoped so, Mel thought.
Mel had already booked the flight which took off tonight. He was clearing up his things not wanting Leo to just throw his things in like he was doing now. Mel was annoyed that he was left alone with the annoying Leo. His whistling was annoying.
‘Leo,’ Mel called after five minutes.
‘Yes, Mel?’
‘Stop whistling!’ Mel warned him.
Leo grinned. ‘But why? It’s really good. You should try it.’
‘No thanks,’ Mel declined. ‘Just stop it.’
Leo whistled more loudly. Mel curled up his fingers. Sometimes Leo can be so annoying that they would always get into fights. And this seemed like one of those moments for Mel.
After a minute Mel couldn’t take it any longer. He sprinted across the room over to Leo and took a swing. Leo ducked making Mel hit the wall instead. He made a whole on the wall.
‘Hey,’ Leo exclaimed. ‘What are you doing?’
‘Trying to hit you, that is what I’m trying to do,’ Mel answered.
‘Wait,’ Leo once again ducked another punch. Mel hit the lamp. ‘Think about the anger management classes you took,’ Leo tried to reason with him.
‘Screw that!’
They ended up having a battle with Mel trying to throw a punch and Leo always dodging it. After what seemed like hours finally Mel got a hit. Leo growled loudly and the punch hit his eyes. Both of them fell back on the bed tired.
A knock was heard at the door. Mel and Leo looked at each other battling with the eyes for whom to go and answer it.
‘Injured man here,’ Leo came with an excuse.
Mel shrugged his shoulders. He gave up feeling guilty for losing his temper. Looks like Daniel was going to put him back into anger management class, he thought grimly. Mel got up and went to the door. When he swung it open he was in for a shock.
Leo saw Mel frozen at the door and went to investigate. He too froze at the spot in front of the man.
There was silence. Edison eyes were wide open staring at Charlene as if she just stabbed him in his heart. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing would come out. He let out a frustrated breath and ran his hand through his hair. He looked at Daniel then back at Charlene.
‘Why didn’t you tell me this before?’ he accused her.
Charlene was caught off balance. He was actually talking it pretty good that what she had imagined.
‘Because I was scared you wouldn’t like me after you know who I really am.’
‘You could have given me the benefit of the doubt,’ Edison answered, hurt at her words.
Charlene bowed her head. ‘I’m sorry,’ she whispered.
‘As much as I hate to break this up but we have to get going,’ Daniel spoke up.
Edison glared at Daniel. ‘If you want to go then go,’ Edison snapped. ‘No ones stopping you.’
‘Daniel is here to take me home,’ Charlene said.
‘What?’ Edison exclaimed. ‘No you can’t...’
‘I have to,’ Charlene cut him off. ‘I have gone away for too long.’
‘Please,’ Edison begged. ‘Don’t leave me.’
Charlene choked on her tears. ‘Don’t make it harder for me as it is.’
‘I have to tell you something,’ he said. He looked at Daniel then at Charlene.
‘I’ll give you two minutes,’ Daniel said. He closed the door to the motel behind him leaving the two who were nearly in emotional breakdown.
‘What is it?’ Charlene squeaked out when Daniel left.
‘First I want to know if you feel anything for me.’
She looked at Edison confused at what he meant by that. She then thought of Gillian. She now had another best friend and she couldn’t jeopardize there friendship. She shook her head. ‘I can’t feel anything for you.’
‘What is that meant to mean?’ Edison asked.
‘It means that I can only like you as a friend and nothing more.’
‘That’s a lie!’ Edison yelled. ‘I know you love me as much as I love you!’
Charlene caught her breath. Did she hear what she thought she head? She searched for answers on Edison’s facial expression but he quickly hardened his expression making it impossible for her to know what he was thinking. ‘What did you say?’
‘Forget it,’ Edison spat. ‘It’s not like you’d care.’
Charlene walked to her bed and sat down. She found it hard to breath. He loved her. She was sure of it. But what can she do? Gillian would be hurt and she couldn’t do that to her. She would be hurt as well, she thought. And she was hurting Edison as well. Maybe it was better if she didn’t runaway that way she would never hurt anyone most of all herself. She covered her face with her hands and let all her tears out.
She felt someone sitting next to her a moment later. Did Edison leave and Daniel came? She let cried even more. She lost the first love of hers and maybe the only. An arm wrapped around her shoulders.
‘Sshh, don’t cry,’ Edison said.
Charlene stopped crying and looked up. ‘What are you still doing here?’
‘I can’t leave you like this.’
‘But… but…’ she protested.
‘No matter what I’ll still care for you,’ he whispered.
He slowly bent his head and took her mouth in his.
The door banged open and in stormed Gillian followed by Daniel and Nicholas who was breathless. Both Edison and Charlene jumped away from each other and looked at the angry Gillian.
‘How can you do this to me?’ Gillian demanded.
Charlene opened her mouth to speak but Edison beat her to it. ‘Do what to you?’
Gillian was looking at him. She glared at Charlene. ‘I thought you were my friend! But I thought wrong I guess. You go behind my back with the guy I like!’
Edison frowned. ‘Gillian…’
Gillian spun to face him. ‘What? You are going to fire me now?’
‘I’m thinking about it.’
‘Well, you don’t have to no more. I quit!’
‘Wait, Gillian,’ Charlene cried out. ‘Don’t do this. It’s not what you think!’
‘It’s not what I think?’ Gillian repeated mockingly. ‘I’ve seen you two kissing with my own two eyes.’
‘Let me explain!’ Charlene protested.
‘No, I don’t want to hear it,’ Gillian yelled. She spun on her heels and headed for the door. She ended up bumping into Mel.
Mel and Leo walked in looking as if they’ve seen a ghost. They didn’t bother looking at Gillian who fell back after bumping on Mel’s hard chest. They were both looking and Charlene.
‘Hey!’ Gillian exclaimed getting on her feet.
Mel and Leo turned to face the door. So did everyone else. In came the tall man looking angry.
Edison, Charlene and Daniel gasped.
