She used the hours to make sure that her bodyguards don’t guess where she was going to head. So she took taxi after taxi to different destinations. By the time it was noon she took the taxi to the airport.
Her best friend and her only friend was helping her out. She said that her cousin was flying down from America on business. He was flying back in the afternoon on the same day. Her friend told her cousin that she was poor and couldn’t afford a plane ticket to America where her grandmother was in her sick bed. Her friends’ cousin felt sorry for her and agreed to take her if she comes on time.
She walked to the customer service. As she was walking she couldn’t help but look at her side. She was shocked to see Edison sitting on one of the chair on a row. He too was shocked to see her. She winked at him making his eyes grow wider.
She didn’t know why she had just done that. She was never like that. She is or was a shy type who kept to herself, but for some reason she was different when she was with him.
She got to the desk. ‘Hi, my name is Charlene Choi and I’m waiting for Mr. Chen,’ she said to the woman behind the desk. She used her mothers’ maiden name that no one knows. If she uses Velcois she would see her father in a matter of seconds.
‘Ah, yes!’ the woman spoke her gaze was looking behind Charlene. ‘Mr. Chen is right over there.’
Charlene followed the woman’s gaze and to her dismay it was none other than Edison. She quickly looked back at the woman in frantic. ‘Please say you’re joking with me,’ she pleaded looking at the woman desperately.
‘I’m sorry, but I’m not joking,’ the woman frowned at her. The guy was gorgeous and this girl was saying that she didn’t want it to be him?
Charlene glanced at Edison. He was staring at her in an odd way. ‘Are you really, really sure?’
‘Yes!’ the woman greeted her teeth getting impatient. Charlene backed away from the desk slowly. She turned and walked over to him dragging her feet.
She put on a smile. ‘Hi,’ she said. Edison didn’t speak just stared. He raised an eyebrow as if saying ‘what is it now?’. She was embarrassed now for everything that she had done.
‘Yes?’
‘My name is Charlene Choi, I’m Vicki’s friend,’ she gave a little wave and an apological smile.
Edison gasped. ‘You have got to be kidding me!’
She could just see it, her trip to America going down the drain. Oh, why did she have to go in his limo? She scolded herself silently. Why did she have to kiss him? And why did she have to wink at him?
‘Don’t judge me,’ she squeaked. She shut her eyes shut.
He stared at her transfixed. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. He cleared his throat and tried again. ‘Here’s the deal,’ he began. She opened her eyes slowly and listened to what he has to say. ‘You get to come with me only if you go with MY rules.’
‘I’m happy to obey,’ she answered quickly.
‘I haven’t even told you the rules,’ he told her clearly not liking the fact that she interrupted him. ‘Rule number one: No talking unless I tell you,’ he paused to look at her expression. He gave a satisfying smile. She didn’t like the rule. ‘Rule number two: No asking personal questions and rule number three: After the flight we go our separate ways. If you don’t like the rules then I suggest that you take the public plane.’
She could see he liked being the boss. ‘Will you pay for the ticket?’ she couldn’t help but ask.
‘No!’ he snapped.
She was annoying him. ‘I was just staking my options,’ she muttered. She looked around the airport. It was crowded with people. She caught sight of someone that looked familiar. She squinted her eyes to see. It was Mel! How did they find her that fast? She thought. ‘Fine, I’ll go with your stupid rules,’ she quickly gave in not that she had any choice. She linked her arm with Edison who was mortified now of her action. ‘Let’s go!’ she eagerly said. She was sure Mel didn’t see her. But if she stayed there longer they would see her.
‘What in the…?’ his exclamation was cut short as he was being dragged away to the private section of the airport. She knew where it was because she used to go through there to her fathers’ private jet.
Edison was well known, she thought. They weren’t being stopped by anyone. How come she doesn’t know him? She knew many famous and rich people through her father.
It was when they were safely in the plane did Charlene let go of Edison’s arm.
‘Oh now you want to let go! What? First you wouldn’t let go of my arm and now you are?’ he mocked her. ‘Do you want another kiss too?’ he added.
She grinned at him making him eat his words up. ‘I wouldn’t mind.’
A flight attendance came by their side and took her bag and Edison’s jacket. ‘Your briefcase is next to your chair,’ she told him. She then turned to Charlene. ‘My name is Ruby Lin and I will be your flight attendance. If you have any problem just call me,’ she smiled.
Charlene smiled back. Ruby looked like a super model. Maybe Edison was picky with his staff, she thought unamused.
‘Are you going to stand there and stare at my flight attendance or are you going to come and take a seat?’ She must have been lost in her thoughts because next thing she knew, the flight attendance was nowhere in sight and Edison was seated in the front. He was grinning mildly. She glared at him and took a seat at the back of the plane.
‘What? Not going to sit next to me?’ he cheekily asked. He was standing up to see her. ‘Or are you inviting me at the back so we can make passionate love?’
She pulled a face. But she didn’t say anything. She was obeying the rules.
Mel thought he saw her but the crowd was too thick to confirm if he was right. He looked around frantically in every direction. His instincts told him that she was here. He could sense her presence close by.
Daniel and Leo came from different direction and met up with him. Daniel had just checked the other end of the airport for her while Leo checked the top floor. He had been checking the terminal point to see if she’s going to take that.
‘Why does she have to be damn clever?’ Leo whined. ‘I mean she could have been like any other snob! But no she has to be the one that likes do make her bodyguards chase her!’
‘Any sign of her?’ Daniel asked keeping his eye out for anything familiar and ignoring Leo's usual whining.
‘I’m not sure,’ Mel began with doubt in his voice. ‘I saw this girl but she may not be her.’ he stared at the direction he thought he saw her. ‘What is over there?’ he pointed at the private section.
‘You think she’s at the private terminal,’ Daniel wasn’t asking him a question. He was more like saying it believing she might just be there.
‘Let’s go!’ Mel commanded.
The three of them headed for the private section to be stopped by the security. They were being held for security purpose. They flashed their ID card and were in within minutes. Daniel headed for the check in point to check who went through. Leo went to check if she was anywhere in the airport. Mel went straight to the large window to check whose boarding the plane.
He spotted her from miles. She was boarding the plane but she wasn’t alone. She was with a guy who looked a little familiar to him. He thought he saw the guy before. He had to tell the others.
‘She just boarded Ed Is On plane,’ he told them over the communicator.
‘What!’ both Daniel and Leo gasped in unison.
Daniel asked the woman behind the check-in counter who owns that plane. She wasn’t allowed to share the information with anyone. ‘At least tell me where they are going!’ he yelled.
‘Calm down sir,’ the woman spoke calmly. ‘I might be able to help you with that.’ She scrolled down the computer to see where the plane was heading. ‘They are going to… America.’
The three of them met again arguing about who’s going to tell Patrick the news.
