~Reflecting on the Past~

Chapter Twenty-Nine ‘Reflecting on the Past’

A thousand miles away, Edison was listening to the same song. He lay on his bed on his stomach motionless. Memories of Charlene flooded through his head. His thought went back to the day he met her.

*****Flash Back One*****

‘Who are you?’ the man bellowed clearly not liking the fact that a stranger has just entered the limo.

Charlene hesitated to answer at first. She took few seconds to think up an excuse. ‘Who am I?’ she spat. ‘Who are you?’

The man looked at her appalled. ‘What do you mean? This is my limo!’ Then he added, ‘a private one too.’

‘Well, you’ve got the wrong limo,’ she argued.

‘Do you know who I am?’ he asked.

‘Sure,’ she replied. ‘A sexy guy.’

*****Flash Back Two*****

She put on a smile. ‘Hi,’ she said. Edison didn’t speak just stared. He raised an eyebrow as if saying ‘what is it now?’ She was embarrassed now for everything that she had done.

‘Yes?’

‘My name is Charlene Choi, I’m Vicki’s friend,’ she gave a little wave.

Edison gasped. ‘You have got to be kidding me!’

She could just see it, her trip to America going down the drain. Oh, why did she have to go in his limo? She scolded herself silently. Why did she have to kiss him? Why did she have to wink at him?

‘Don’t judge me,’ she squeaked. She shut her eyes shut.

He stared at her transfixed. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. He cleared his throat and tried again. ‘Here’s the deal,’ he began. She opened her eyes slowly and listened to what he has to say. ‘You get to come with me only if you go with the rules.’

‘I’m happy to obey,’ she answered quickly.

*****Flash Back Three*****

‘My flight attendance was complaining that you keep asking things exactly ten minutes after,’ he said sitting himself next to her. ‘And I had been timing you.’

She smiled wryly. He stared at her. ‘Okay, I’m bored at the back of the plane of some guy I don’t even know.’

‘You should have thought of that before you boarded the plane,’ he told her not at all feeling any sympathy for her. ‘And someone you kissed couple of hours ago doesn’t seem strange to me,’ he added just for the sake of it.

*****Flash Back Four*****

‘Edison?’ she couldn’t believe her eyes. He was right in front of her.

‘What are you doing here?’ he asked surprised to see her.

‘Job interview,’ she said. ‘Well not anymore. What about you? What are you doing here?’

‘Can’t you guess?’ he laughed he waved his hand behind him.

Realization hit her. ‘Chen Enterprise is your company!’ she exclaimed. ‘I should have guessed that. I forgot your surname,’ she admitted.

*****Flash Back Five*****

‘Can I speak to Charlene Choi please?’ the caller asked.

Charlene jerked back on her chair. This person knew her? And it was a guy? Hold on, she thought back to the voice. It sounded familiar. ‘Edison?’ she cried out.

‘The one and only,’ he sang.

‘Why are you phoning?’ she asked calming her nerves down.

‘Just to see if you talk politely on the phone,’ he answered.

‘Where are you?’ she quickly scanned the lobby. She couldn’t see him.

‘Look behind you?’ he said. She whirled around with her chair to face him. ‘Hi.’ She caught her breath. He looked drop dead gorgeous with his navy blue suit. His hair was spiked up with red highlights. And his smile just made her heart melt.

*****End of Flash Back Five*****

*****Flash Back Six*****

‘Hello, gorgeous, how about a lift?’

‘My mother warned me of guys like you,’ Charlene mumbled, a smile forming on her mouth.

‘That’s the trouble with mothers,’ Edison’s grin stretched wider. A devastating dimple marked one cheek. ‘They never look beyond the surface.’

She raised one eyebrow, arched her neck, and gave him the slow once-over. ‘And a very nice surface it is, too.’

He smiled, amused with the open flirting. ‘So are you coming?’ he asked. He loved the flirting but he didn’t like people watching as they were waiting for the bus. They were watching openly at them amused.

‘Only if you let me drive,’ she said smiling innocently.

*****Flash Back Seven*****

‘Thanks for the ride.’ Charlene took off the helmet and handed it over to Edison.

‘I should be the one, who is thanking,’ he grinned. She smiled.

‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’ She made an attempt to leave but Edison snaked his hand over hers and tugged her causing her to stop. She turned to face him questioningly.

‘Aren’t you forgetting something?’ he asked.

‘Urm…’ Charlene thought hard if she was. She frowned. ‘Am I forgetting anything?’

‘My kiss,’ he said.

*****End of Flash Back Seven*****

*****Flash Back Eight*****

‘Ah, you don’t know how much damage you’ve already done. In any case, there’s something else I need to tell you.’

‘Something else?’ She felt a strange letdown when Edison removed his hand.

‘Yes, not only do you ride a motorcycle, you also skate backwards. As it turns out, these are two of my requirements for a wife. And I must say, you pass with flying colours.’

‘You’re joking, right?’

Edison grinned over his shoulder and started to glide away only to stop and return in a long slow arc.

‘Yes?’ She scowled as he slid in close. Again, too close.

He lifted one hand.

She watched his hand come close to her face. Then closer. ‘You want to tell me what’s going on here?’

With a gentle swipe of his index finger, Edison brushed the corner of her mouth. She flinched. Felt her lips tingle and her tongue turn dry. Gulping was impossible. Inhaling only slightly more doable. He had to know how awkward she was feeling.
Edison smiled broadly. He knew. ‘Powdered sugar.’

*****Flash Back Nine*****

Charlene thought she saw her three bodyguards inside a building behind them. She went in front of Edison to cover herself. Edison took it the wrong way. He thought she wanted to stand close to him. ‘Never mind calling.’ She spotted a taxi barrelling down the other side of the Sixth Avenue, stepped off the curb, and with her thumb and middle finger forming a circle, delivered a piercing whistle.

Like odyssey responding to the sirens’ call, the cab made a suicidal move through the traffic and shrieked to a halt. All that was lacking was for it to be dashed against the rocks. Luckily, the curbs in Manhattan are low and rounded.

Gillian snapped her cell phone shut. ‘I’d forgotten this little trick of yours you mentioned you could do.’ She let Edison hold open the car door. She got into the back seat first.

Edison waited for Charlene to get in next. ‘You realize you just demonstrated requirement number three.’ He pantomimed her whistling.

Charlene stared at the way his fingers touched his open mouth. And found her libido bouncing around with all the maniac exuberance after two-months-old Labrador retriever. ‘Boy you’re easy to please. Half the people in the world must meet your requirements. And if you don’t get in the taxi soon a few of them will be joining us any minute.’ She used her head to nod at the girls eyeing him up hungrily.

*****End of Flash Back Nine*****

***** Flash Back Ten*****

‘What?’ she asked.

‘You’re jealous!’ he sang out like a child.

Charlene gasped taken aback. ‘No… I’m not!’ she denied. She looked away from him and was glad to see the bus halt in front. Since she was the last on the long queue she had to wait a while.

‘I’ll give you a lift,’ Edison offered.

‘With what? Your bike is back at the hockey rink, unless you were thinking of carrying me all the way to my place.’

‘I’m not complaining to that!’ he slyly smiled.

She let out an exaggerating sigh. ‘What am I going to do with you?’ she shook her head like a mother disappointed at her child.

‘Take me home and work wonders on me?’ he offered eagerly.

*****End of Flash Back Ten*****

Edison’s thought was cut short from the vibrate of his cell phone on the bedside table. He ignored it wanting to go back to his happy thoughts of Charlene. It stopped vibrating. Only to start again after a few seconds.

He let out a frustrated sigh. He grabbed the phone from the table angrily and without looking at the ID Caller he answered it.

‘What do you want?’ he yelled down the phone.

‘Sorry to disturb you,’ Gillian stammered shakily. ‘But I got some good news.’

‘What is it?’ he calmed a little down.

‘Patrick Velcois asked for a meeting.’

Edison’s eyes widened. What was the meaning of this? He thought. Why had Patrick all of a sudden called for a meeting?

‘When and where?’ Edison asked. He had lost interest in putting Patrick out of business but he was curious into knowing about this unexpected meeting.

‘Two days from now at 2pm,’ Gillian said. She stalled a few seconds before adding, ‘In Hong Kong.’

Edison let out a small gasp. This must be really important, he thought. ‘Book a flight for three people,’ he ordered.

‘For three?’

‘I want you and Nicholas to accompany me,’ he said. ‘Also I want all the files of Velcois Enterprise on my desk for tomorrow morning. I’ll be at the office then.’ He hung up without saying bye.

This gives him the opportunity to see Charlene. Maybe things could be different, he couldn’t help but hope.
