Two days have gone swiftly for Edison. He had devoted his time on his work. He planned to see Charlene while he's going to be in Hong Kong. Patrick couldn't ruin his plans even if he tried, Edison thought confidently. This time he would be in control. Whatever he says goes.
'Mr. Chen,' Gillian said. She stood next to Nicholas in front of Edison. He sat down with no emotion expression showing. They felt sorry for him. They never once saw him smile let alone laugh.
'Yeah?'
'Our flight has been called,' Nicholas told him.
Edison stood up without looking at the two. 'Let's go then,' he ordered. He grabbed his luggage and wheeled it to their gate leaving the two to follow behind.
'Do you think he'll be alright when we get there?' Gillian whispered to Nicholas.
'Not sure,' Nicholas whispered back. Over the last couple of weeks they had grew closer together, depending on each other. Edison was out of it most the time. When it was lunch they had to go alone since Edison wouldn't leave his office unless there's a meeting. They would always bring him lunch knowing he would have a few bites then throw it in the bin. 'Anything's possible.'
'That don't make me feel good,' Gillian moaned.
'Well, I just hope Charlene is okay,' he whispered even more quietly not wanting Edison to hear Charlene's name being mentioned. 'I'm gonna see if I can see her.'
Gillian looked at Nicholas with sad eyes. 'I want to see her as well.'
Nicholas arched an eyebrow.
Gillian avoided looking at him as they entered the Edison's plane, Ed Is On. Nicholas was still looking at her with questioning look when they were seated on the plane sitting opposite each other and had taken off. Edison was seated at the other side from ear shot.
Gillian couldn't take Nicholas staring and gave in. 'Okay, I know I was a bit harsh with her,' she admitted.
'A little?' Nicholas repeated.
'Fine, I was way out of line. Happy?'
'Extremely,' Nicholas grinned. His smile dropped when he saw the sadness in her eyes. 'You miss her too?'
'Yeah, she was the best of friend that I always wanted,' she told him. She stared out the window but her eyes were distant. 'It was I who wasn't the best of friend.'
'I'm sure when you tell her that she would automatically forgive you,' Nicholas comforted her.
'You think?' she looked at him with hope in her eyes.
'I may have just known Charlene for a few months but it was just enough to know that she's a forgiving person who wouldn't let anything come in between friendship,' he said wisely.
Gillian smiled up at him. 'You're so sweet,' she said. 'I thought I was in love with Edison but I realised that I was only lusting over him.'
'You don't have to explain yourself to me,' he said uncomfortable about her talking about Edison with him.
'No, no, hear me out,' she insisted. 'Nic, I was blind not seeing you there next to me. But I think it's too late to say this¡ I'll just come out and say it.' Gillian hesitated. 'I like you! And I think I'm falling hard for you.'
It took time for it to register in Nicholas's head. Did he hear right? Gillian liked him? 'Say that again,' he said.
'I like you Nicholas Tse,' she stated.
Nicholas didn't know how to feel. He was waiting for this moment to come from the first time he laid his eyes on her but he didn't think he'd be speechless.
Gillian took his silence the wrong way. 'I'm so sorry. I just had to tell. I'm not asking to like me back,' she babbled on.
Nicholas startled her and himself by jumping up and kissing her smack on the lips. Edison didn't notice even if he didn't he showed no signs of interest. Their lips parted. They both stared at each other inhaling and exhaling heavily. 'I'm so sorry,' he quickly apologized. 'That was uncalled for.'
'No, I've been wanting you to kiss me for weeks now,' she admitted. Then shyly turned around realising what she said.
Nicholas smiled. 'Really?'
Gillian nodded. Both of them began their new relationship on the plane forgetting about Edison's problem and Charlene.
Edison stretched as he stepped on to the Hong Kong soil. This is it, he told himself. Right after the meeting he would go straight for Charlene. He'll kidnap her if he had to go all extreme just to get her back and he didn't care if Patrick would send police after him.
It took them an hour to get to the city and check in the hotel. Then it took another two hours just to get themselves freshen up for the meeting that would be taking place in half an hour. Three of them headed there when they were refreshed and ready. They went into Velcois Enterprise were Patrick was waiting to begin the meeting.
Charlene got up slowly. Vicky would be coming shortly for her ¡°daily check up¡± as Charlene would like to think. Vicky always brought food with her and made her eat it. But unknown to her, after she leaves automatically Charlene brings it back up.
Today was different for her. Today it was hard for her to get up. She had to force her weak body up from the bed. When she got to her feet she felt rush of pain jolt up to her head making her fall back down on the bed.
What's happening? She thought. She held her head with her hands. The pain was growing. She couldn't let Vicky see her like this. She would make a big deal about it. Please go away, she thought wishfully. She reached for her bed side table and opened up the drawer, taking out a pack of pain killers. She broke two out and popped it in her mouth. She chewed it and drained it down with the water her maid would always put on her bed side table.
Her sudden movements had stirred the puppy. He was stretching. Charlene looked at him forgetting her pain. 'Have you seen Edison before you came here?' she asked him, even though it was ridiculous to assume she would get any reply.
Kě ài barked.
Charlene gave a short laugh. It was like he understood her and replied to her. She stroked him gently. 'How was he like?'
Kě ài whimpered. It covered his face with his front to paws.
Charlene scooped him up and placed him on her lap. 'You and I are actually having a conversation aren't we?' she said with a smile. Kě ài barked as if to say yes. She didn't think she would laugh or smile anymore but she was wrong. Kě ài was making her laugh.
Kě ài barked.
'Aww, you're so Kě ài!' she cooed. Her face fell. 'Just like Edison,' she whispered sadly. Tears welled up. No she can't start crying! Vicky would be coming shortly. But it was helpless the first drop fell on Kě ài, who jumped off her lap and looked adoringly at her. He barked when tears after tears fell. 'I can't help it,' she cried out to him.
Kě ài waggled his small tail. As if he thought of something he jumped up on Charlene, startling her. He then started licking her tears away. It tickled. Her tears turned into laughter. She fell back on the bed, the puppy on her chest still licking her face. She was laughing really hard now.
'Stop!' she cried out through her laughter. 'Kě ài!'
Vicky stood outside Velcois Mansion. She was debating if today was the right day. She held her bag tightly under her arm as if protecting the bottle. On her other hand she was holding hers and Charlene's dinner. She took a deep breath and rang the bell. 'It's now or never,' she told herself.
The maid opened the door for her giving her a beaming smile. 'Miss Zhou, please come in. she's in her bedroom.'
'Thanks,' Vicky smiled back genuinely as she entered the household. 'I'll take her dinner up.'
'You're such a sweet girl,' the older woman complimented kindly.
Vicky headed up the stairs and went straight into Charlene's room to find her laughing and screaming while a puppy licked her. Vicky felt happy. She couldn't believe that one small puppy could make everyone's day.
'Charlene,' Vicky called so she can be noticed.
Charlene quickly scrambled to her feet making the puppy jump off onto the bed. Her face was back to the expressionless face as before. Vicky happiness died as well.
'Who's this?' Vicky asked looking at the puppy adoringly. She walked over, dropped the bag of food on the bed and picked up the puppy. The puppy barked. 'Aww, aren't you a little cutie? What's his name?' she looked up at Charlene.
'Kě ài,' Charlene said but it came with a squeak. The puppy barked at the mention of his name.
'Kě ài as in cute?' Vicky stroked the puppy as she said it.
Charlene only managed to nod.
'Hey, Kě ài,' she greeted the puppy. The puppy barked again. 'The name suits you,' she told the puppy. 'If I knew you were going to be here I would have brought some food for you.'
Vicky gently put the puppy down on the bed and grabbed the bag she had discarded. 'You must be hungry,' she said to Charlene.
Charlene stayed silence.
'You know we've been friends for a long time and you still won't talk to me,' Vicky said with hurt. She then sighed. 'You can't stay mute for long.' There was double meaning behind it but Charlene didn't notice it.
Vicky prepared the food and they ate in silence. Vicky once or twice let Kě ài have some of her food but didn't want to upset his stomach. After there slow and quiet dinner Vicky went down stairs to throw away the rubbish not wanting to smell the room if she threw it in Charlene's bin. Also the maid had made dessert as she always would. Vicky took the chance to use the bottle in Charlene's coffee.
Vicky slowly took the tray of dessert and both their coffee upstairs. She found it very strange that the puppy was barking constantly. Vicky quickened her pace not caring if the coffee spilled a little. 'Charlene?' Vicky called out when she got to the door. She pushed the door open with her shoulders and entered.
Kě ài could be seen barking none stop and wagging his tail furiously. He was barking at something at the other side of the bed. Charlene was nowhere to be seen. Vicky walked over slowly towards Kě ài. Fear was written all over her face. When she got to the puppy she looked down at what he was barking at.
In slow motion the tray fell off her hand. She covered her mouth with her hand as she gasped.
'Omg!' she cried out in shock.
