‘Are you going to keep us in suspense or are you going to tell us why you brought up this meeting all of a sudden?’ Edison said ten minutes after Patrick began the meeting. Patrick was delaying for some reason. It annoyed him. He couldn’t stand being in the same room as him. ‘Or are you telling us we travelled here for your amusement?’ Edison looked up at him in disgust.
‘There is a reason,’ Patrick said calmly. There was no speck of anger in him when Edison spoke to him with no pleasantly or with any respect. He stared straight at Edison. ‘How is your mother?’ he asked.
Edison slammed his fist on the table. He shot to his feet and glared down at Patrick. His nose was flaring. ‘You brought me up here to talk about my mother?’ he yelled.
‘No,’ Patrick said. He had not flinched with Edison’s temper like the other two nor did his mood change. ‘I was merely bringing up a conversation.’
‘Well, this isn’t a social call!’ Edison tried to calm his nerve down but looking at Patrick who was not at all moved by anything and in a jolly mood made his blood boil.
‘Mr. Chen, sit down,’ Nicholas spoke up.
Edison looked at Nicholas. He then turned back at Patrick. Slowly Edison sat down but the anger was still there.
‘You did want a meeting with me for months now, am I not right?’ Patrick raised an eyebrow waiting for an answer. He looked at the other two then back at Edison.
‘Yes,’ Edison said through his teeth. He forced himself from yelling it out.
‘Well, here’s your chance,’ Patrick informed.
All eyes were on Edison. Edison was silent, lost in thoughts. He thought of Charlene. His anger evaporated. He didn’t want the company no more. He wanted Charlene. He didn’t care if that means losing millions. He’d rather be homeless poor man than lose Charlene.
Edison shook his head. ‘No, I don’t want it any more.’
Nicholas and Gillian gasped. ‘What?’ they both cried out.
‘Before I had vengeance in my mind but not any more,’ Edison admitted. He looked Patrick straight into his eyes with purpose. ‘I have other things in my mind. Something else I want to gain.’
‘But all your hard work…’ Nicholas protested not at all understanding the double meaning in Edison’s words.
‘It doesn’t matter,’ Edison said nonchalantly.
‘’But…?’ Nicholas and Gillian both objected at the same time.
‘No buts,’ Edison cut them off. ‘I made my decision.’
‘Mr. Chen, you do realize that I brought you up here to sell my company to you,’ Patrick stated.
‘I know,’ Edison nodded.
‘Maybe you should sleep on it,’ Patrick offered. ‘You don’t sound like yourself.’
‘No!’ Edison yelled. He got up from him chair once again. ‘I’m sick and tired of thinking! I made my decision! And I want Cha…!’
Patrick’s secretary barged in the room in short out of breath. She cut Edison off short. ‘Mr. Velcois, your maid had just rung…’ she waited to catch her breath before carrying on. ‘It’s Charlene,’ this got everyone’s attention. ‘She was taken to the city hospital.’
‘Omg!’ ‘What?’ ‘No!’ was heard around the room. Then everyone rushed passed the out-of-breath secretary, out the room still in shock from the news. Edison forgot his hatred for Patrick that very second. All he wanted to do was get to Charlene. All of them raced out the building taking Patrick's car. There was silent in the car. Worry was written on all fours face. They silently prayed that nothing serious had happened to her.
At the hospital Daphne was already there with Vicky next to her on the bench. Charlene was in other side of the double door they were sitting in front of. Vicky was lost in her own world. She had been crying from the time she drove up to the Velcois mansion. Daphne had gone to visit Charlene to tell her the truth when she saw an ambulance parked outside. She then had seen a stretcher carrying an unconscious Charlene into the van. She had run to Charlene. Her niece Vicky was next to her crying heavily. She had given Vicky a lift. Vicky wanted to bring the puppy with her but Daphne knew that animals weren’t allowed in the hospital premises.
Daphne followed behind the ambulance. She had been guilty, she was still guilty. She blamed herself for what happened to Charlene. This wouldn’t have happened if only she spoke the truth.
Daphne snapped out of her thoughts when she heard loud voices. Vicky too snapped out as both of them watched at the end of the corridor. The voice neared.
‘What happened?’ Daphne recognized one of the voices instantly.
‘She is in a process of being examined,’ a lady voice, Daphne assumed was a nurse, reply.
‘Is it anything major?’ Edison’s voice full of worry could be heard.
It was then Daphne and Vicky saw them turn the corner and come in their view. Edison was the first to see them. His eyes darted away from his mother not wanting to meet her eyes. The rest seen Daphne and Vicky already seated. The nurse excused herself saying something about seeing a patient. No one noticed nor was they bothered.
‘Daphne,’ Patrick called in shock. ‘What are you doing here?’
Daphne moved her gaze from her son to Patrick. ‘I came to see Charlene but by the time I got there I saw an ambulance parked outside.’
‘What are you doing in Hong Kong anyways?’ Edison snapped coldly. ‘What business do you have with Charlene?’
Nicholas thought Edison was a bit too harsh with his mother. He walked over to Daphne and placed one hand on her elbow. ‘Are you okay?’ he asked with full concern.
Daphne nodded. It still hurt her to see in Edison’s eyes the hatred. ‘I... I’m fine,’ she stuttered.
Gillian was confused at who the two women were. She had never seen them before. She soon found out who the woman Nicholas was very concerned about was.
‘Don’t be such a jerk towards your mother!’ Nicholas seethed through his teeth.
‘If she wasn’t a whore this would never have happened!’ Edison shouted. He felt instantly guilty. He covered his guilt blanking his face from everyone.
Everyone gasped.
‘How dare you speak to your mother like that?’ Patrick spat with disgust.
‘Who are you to tell me what to do?’ Edison turned to him with rage. ‘This does not concern you. And don’t think you’re my father because you’re not!’
Vicky screamed. She was the only one who kept quiet, who didn’t want to get involved. She was too much into her guilt and worry that she didn’t want to argue. All heads turned to her. Her head was bent. She stopped screaming. She looked up at everyone angrily. ‘Stop it!’ she yelled. She then turned to Edison, her eyes hardened, she yelled, ‘He may or not be but yelling like that won’t help Charlene!’
There was silence all around. They realised that they were being selfish. Charlene was in that very room. They had no clue what was going on.
‘Please let her be okay,’ Gillian prayed.
The rest followed on as they did silent prayers.
It wasn’t until an hour later, the door swung open, did the silence break. Everyone rushed over to the nurse that was the first to step out the room attempting to get some answers of Charlene’s news.
‘What happened?’ ‘Is everything okay?’ ‘How is she?’ everyone said at once.
‘Sorry, I’ll let the doctor tell you the news when he finished cleaning up,’ the nurse said in a calmly manner. She left them in more worry.
They had to wait another five minutes before the doctor came out.
Vicky rushed over to the doctor and grabbed his hands. ‘Alec how is she?’ she cried out.
‘Calm, down Vicky,’ Alec said. He untangled his and Vicky’s hand and turned to the rest of the group. ‘Charlene is a deep sleep right now. We don’t know if we should class this as a coma. ’ He paused when some gasped or cried before continuing. ‘For the past few days Charlene’s body was refusing food,’ he said in a professional manner.
‘But I always brought her food and she would eat it,’ Vicky protested.
‘She may eat but her body would always bring it back up,’ Alec said sadly. ‘With the lack of food in her body Charlene’s body became weak.’
‘Even so this can’t make her go straight into coma,’ Vicky stated with her doctor knowledge. ‘I’ve never seen this case before.’
‘I never seen it but I heard of it,’ Alec answered. Vicky’s eyes widened. Alec nodded. ‘It’s a rare case but I never believed that being weak can put you in a deep sleep until I met Charlene now.’
Edison wanted to know what this means for Charlene and her long run. ‘When will she wake up?’ Edison’s voice came out as a squeak. He cleared his throat. It was like there was a lump on his throat. He fought back the tears that were threatening to come out.
Everyone looked at the doctor wanting to know the answer.
‘We fed her through a tube to give her some energy,’ Alec said. He avoided eye contact with the others. ‘It’s up to Charlene to wake up.’
