Chapter 36

~Finally the Real Truth!~

Chapter Thirty-Four ‘Finally the Real Truth!’

‘What is that meant to mean?’ Vicky shrieked. Her eyes widened even more. ‘That does not help us at all!’

No one but her spoke. The others were too shocked and upset that they couldn’t utter a word. Edison’s heart broke into so many pieces.

Did this mean the end of him and Charlene? He thought. Why couldn’t she stay strong for him? He’d find a way to get them back together. Why did she become so weak? It’s his entire fault. If he followed her here and claimed for her it would have been okay. Charlene wouldn’t be in the hospital bed right this moment!

‘Vicky,’ Alec whispered. He took a hold of her and looked at the others. ‘Charlene has been taken to a private room using the other door. She’ll be in room 214a. Only two at a time may go in.’ he then dragged the hysteric Vicky away to his office.

‘I want to go see Charlene!’ Vicky screamed.

‘You will after I have a word with you,’ Alec replied.

When they got to his office he sat her down on the chair. He leaned on his desk and watched her. His heart went out for her. His heart couldn’t bear to see her cry.

‘She’ll be okay,’ Alec assured her.

‘How do you know?’ Vicky snapped at him. ‘It’s my entire fault,’ she blamed herself. She covered her face. ‘I wanted something like this to happen but I didn’t want it to be serious!’

‘It’s not your fault, Vicky,’ Alec said with a sigh.

‘I was going to give her the bottle. I just thought it would be fine. A small stomach ache. I’d make a big deal about it and take her to the hospital. Then I would call everyone up and they would come running.’ She looked straight into Alec’s eyes. ‘Nothing went as my plan!’ she yelled. ‘Before I could go to give her the tea she was already lying on the floor. I thought she was dead!’

Vicky was disgusted of herself. Alec grabbed her shoulder and pushed her into a hug. ‘Sssh, she’ll be fine. She’s got here the people she loves and who love her with her, praying for her. She’ll be awake sooner than you think.’

Alec’s words were helpful as she pulled back and wiped her tears. ‘You’re right,’ she agreed. ‘She needs me right now to be strong. I’ll help her get better!’ Vicky jumped up. She ran out the room only to return few seconds later. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him on the lips. ‘Thank you for everything,’ Vicky whispered. She then let go and walked out determined to find a way to wake Charlene up.

Alec sighed. A guy can get used to this, he thought as he touched his lips. After kissing his check all the time she finally kissed him on the lips. It made Alec happy. He slowly walked out of his office to go and visit his other patients.

Edison stared at the door to Charlene’s private room. He could see her through the door glass. Her body was lifeless. She didn’t move. It was like she was sleeping only that he knew she won’t wake up. His eyes travelled to Patrick who sat next to her. His head was bowed. He assumed Patrick was crying. Only Edison was the one not crying while the rest did. Tears wouldn’t come out. It was like his mind won’t believe that Charlene is in ‘coma’ as the doctor put it.

‘Please wake up, Char,’ he whispered.

‘Why don’t you go in?’ Daphne suggested.

Edison didn’t turn. He could see his mother behind him through the reflection on the glass. ‘Please, don’t talk to me,’ he pleaded to his mother quietly. ‘I don’t want to argue anymore. I don’t have the energy.’

He saw the hurt in her eyes. He didn’t want to see it but he could. He looked away from the glass. He missed his mother there was no doubt about that. But now he hated himself for what he called his mother earlier.

‘I’m sorry,’ Edison whispered. It was faint but Daphne heard it. Her face lit up with hope. ‘I didn’t mean any of those words I called you,’ he carried on. ‘I don’t deserve forgiveness.’

By the time he finished Daphne was overjoyed. She had never expected Edison to be polite to her that quickly. Maybe love does over come others heart. ‘I already forgave you,’ she told him.

Edison kept quiet. His head was bowed that she couldn’t tell if he was happy or angry still with her. Surprisingly Edison turned abruptly and hugged his mother. He buried his face on her shoulder. Finally his tears came out. He began sobbing. He cried for Charlene, for his mother and for their love.

It seemed like ages when Edison lifted his head up from his mother’s shoulder and looked at her. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. ‘I think I drenched you,’ he pointed at her dress with evidence of wetness. He gave a short laugh. Ironic that he can laugh at a situation like this, he thought.

Daphne ignored that. ‘Listen I think I should tell you the whole truth,’ Daphne said in a serious tone.

Edison frowned. He didn’t want to be angry with his mother again. ‘Leave it mother,’ he advised.

‘No, I have to tell you!’ Daphne insisted. She brushed past him. She opened the door and walked right in.

Gillian and Nicholas looked at each other then and Edison. They wondered what his going to do. They wondered what they should do.

‘Edison,’ Daphne called out.

Edison looked at the duo. ‘Are you two coming?’ he lifted an eyebrow in question.

Nicholas and Gillian hesitated before getting to their feet and following Edison in. Vicky in time came and saw the group huddled in the small but spacious room. Edison leaned on the wall next to the door. Nicholas and Gillian sat on the empty bed next to Charlene’s. Vicky walked over to sit next to Nicholas.

Daphne stood in the centre of the room. She bit her lips. She didn’t think she would ever say this to anyone but here today was the best time to say the truth. To get the misery out. And to get the loving couple back together.

‘I lied,’ Daphne began. Patrick was going to protest but he kept quiet. Daphne continued as no one wanted to interrupt. ‘I hated Louis Chen but I loved him as well. It’s pretty stupid but it was the affect Louis had on me.’ Daphne’s eyes went distant as the memories flashed back in her head as if it just happened yesterday.

‘You see, Louis was always with different women everyday when he wasn’t with me. He would always break my heart. I would leave him and in some strange way he would find a way to bring me back. It was like a game to him. That’s how I really met Patrick. At that time I was pregnant with my first child. I became friends with Patrick. Then Louis came back and he wanted me back. Because I was pregnant with his child I went back.

‘After a few years I met Patrick again. He confessed that he loved me from the beginning. I was upset at that time. I’ve seen Louis yet again with another woman. After all these years I thought he’d at least change. We had four children by then. I hated it, being stuck at home every day with the kids while he went off with his girlfriends.’ Hate could be heard in her voice.

Edison was stomped at what he is hearing about his father. That is, if he really is his father, he corrected himself. How could he do that to his mother?

Daphne wiped a tear that escaped. She continued. ‘The time I spent with Patrick drove Louis crazy. He started being there for me. I know it was bad of me to use Patrick like that but it kept Louis away from any other girls and focus on me. His jealousy made me realise that he did love me. It made me really happy that I went back to him. I then heard him talking on the phone with one of his girlfriends and I started hating him. He would never change I came to realise. He’d always break my heart.

‘I was pregnant with Edison. I didn’t want to tell Louis but he had to know. When I told him he accused me that the baby wasn’t his. He said it was Patrick’s. I had seen the hurt in his eyes when he said that. So I lied and said it was Patrick’s.’

‘You mean that we actually never slept together?’ Patrick said. He was somewhat happy. If only he could tell his late wife, the one that he really loved and still loves.

Daphne nodded. She turned, fearing what Edison might think. But to her dismay he wasn’t showing any emotions. ‘Edison,’ she called out his name.

He looked up. ‘It’s okay,’ he assured her. ‘I’m not angry with you. I’m just happy that Charlene and I aren’t siblings.’ He gave her a smile to comfort her.

She mouthed ‘thank you’ to him. She turned to Patrick. ‘I’m sorry I used you like that. It was selfish of me. I just wanted to hurt Louis like he hurt me.’

‘Its okay, Daph,’ Patrick smiled at her. ‘I know the pain you were going through. I felt sorry for you and didn’t know that it wasn’t love that I had for you but a brotherly love only. I didn’t realise it until I met Charlene’s mother.’

A tear rolled down Charlene’s cheek.
