Edison was the first to see the tear in Charlene’s eyes even though her eyes were still closed. It wasn’t until Edison’s swift movement did the rest notice as well. Edison was by her side within seconds. He took her hand and sandwiched it with both his hands.
‘Charlene,’ he choked out. He wanted to cry and laugh at the same time. ‘Can you hear me?’
Patrick who was at Charlene’s other side held her other hand. He squeezed it. ‘Come on, honey, please wake up,’ Patrick pleaded.
The room was filled with everyone pleading Charlene to wake up. They didn’t notice Alec come in the room. He cleared his throat. No one paid any attention until he started coughing.
‘Are you okay?’ Vicky was the first to say.
‘Yes, I’m fine,’ he said, displeased with her question. ‘Did I not say two visitors per time?’
Gillian and Nicholas said a few encouraging words to Charlene then scrambled out. Daphne thought she should go herself as she kissed Charlene on the forehead and left. It was Vicky, Edison and Patrick who were still left with the doctor.
‘I’ll wait outside,’ Vicky excused herself. She was happy that Charlene made some kind of sign that she’s okay and she just as might wake up sooner than they think.
‘Dr. Su Charlene had shed a tear,’ Patrick happily said. ‘This is a good sign, right?’
Alec frowned. ‘That can be so,’ he said with a little doubt in his voice. ‘What do you think triggered it?’
‘We talked about some things that I think might have got her in this stage,’ Edison spoke up. He hasn’t moved from his spot, next to Charlene.
‘Then all I advise for you to do is talk to her,’ Alec informed with a smile. ‘The more positive things you say the sooner she’d wake up.’
He left after checking on her and writing some notes on the clipboard that was on the foot of Charlene’s bed. Patrick stared at Edison. He could see the affection in his face and the caring. Maybe Charlene was best with Edison as her soul mate, Patrick thought. He may have been cold towards him but he sure wasn’t towards his daughter.
‘I’ll leave you alone for a while,’ Patrick suggested quietly. ‘Maybe you can talk to her.’
Edison nodded without looking up at Patrick. ‘I’m really sorry,’ he apologized. He had never thought he’d apologize to that man. Maybe things are starting to lighten up for him. He didn’t have that anger in him that he had for all those years. ‘You must hate me for always speaking to you with no respect. And it’s okay if you still have that grudge on me.’
‘Silly boy,’ Patrick laughed. ‘You hurt my daughter and then I’ll have a very big grudge on you!’ He walked over to the door still laughing. He turned the doorknob but stopped. ‘And I might have to send those three bodyguards on you,’ he added. Then within seconds he disappeared through the door.
Edison chuckled. ‘Your old man is pretty cool,’ Edison said to Charlene. He knew that there would be no response but he had to try. ‘Who would have guessed that I’d meet a wonderful girl like you and actually fall in love with you?’ he gave a smirk. ‘When I first saw you, I thought you were insane,’ he admitted. ‘I might as well be honest with you now,’ he told her. He paused as if for her to reply then carried on. ‘Then later if I do say this you might kill me. Actually if you’re listening now you might kill me when you wake up.
‘You were annoying but I grew to adapt it. If you don’t be annoying then I don’t think I’d like it. You would always do something wild. You see I hated women who were wild until I met you. You kissed me the first time we met and for some strange reason I was hooked on you and I wanted more. Then I meet you again. You winked at me. We share our second kiss when we were saying our goodbyes thinking we’d never meet. I fell for you even more. I then started missing you.’ Edison laughed. ‘Missing someone I hardly know! It was shocking. Just when I thought we’d never meet again, we do. This time I offer you a job so I can see you everyday and obsess about you. Charlene, you changed me. I did not realise it until you left. I don’t want to go back to my usual boring life! I want to be the person you changed me into. I want to be yours.
‘Charlene,’ he whispered. He rested his head on her hand and sighed. You’re hurting me, he thought. It’s hurting me when you are motionless in the bed. It’s hurting me not hearing your angelic voice. It’s hurting me not seeing your beautiful big round eyes.
He had no idea that he had actually said that out loud. For him, he couldn’t tell if any of this is real. He found Charlene but she’s in ‘coma’.
Please wake up, he pleaded. I want to tell you that I love you. I want to hear you say those three words back to me. This time I don’t want to hear you say sorry because I won’t have any of that. Tell me you love me Charlene.
Charlene fingers moved. Edison was in too deep with his sorrow that he did not notice nor feel her move.
‘Don’t you love me?’ he carried on. This time knowing he’s saying it allowed. ‘Then wake up and tell me that you’re sorry,’ he demanded. His head was still resting on Charlene’s hand. ‘I’d rather want you to be awake than be a sleep like that!’
This time Charlene moaned softly, too softly that Edison couldn’t hear her.
‘It all started with a kiss.’ He lifted his head up. He leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. He let it linger for a few seconds. ‘Who would have known we’d end up like this?’ he grinned. His eyes were distant as he thought back.

Setting: Hong Kong, Edison’s limousine.
She found him cute with those kissable lips. She leaned forward and kissed him without thinking.

He looked at her oddly when a smile crept up on her face. She rushed over to him and kissed him fully on the lips. He was surprised at first but kissed her back.

Setting: America, Manhattan, Outside Charlene’s Motel
She leaned forward to kiss him on the cheek but he turned his head slyly making her kiss his lips. He pressed his lips on her. She pulled back. ‘That was not what you were going to get.’

Setting: America, Manhattan, Under the Seat of a Hockey Rink
And felt her mouth brush his cheek.
Edison turned. His lips accidentally touched hers.
His lips pressed lightly, maybe not accident? It was brief. Lips ever so slightly parted. Warm breath and tumbling heartbeats mixing.
And it was the most mind-blowing experience of Charlene’s life. And it was happening to her under the seat of a hockey rink!

He tilted her head to face him with the tip of his index finger. He then bent his head to take her lips with his. He pulled back a moment later out of breath.

He narrowed his eyebrows. ‘Apologize for what?’
‘For this…’ She leaned forwards and kissed him.

‘Well, I have to tell you something…’ Charlene looked cocking her eyebrow up questioningly. ‘I want to apologize for this.’ It was him now kissing her.

Kiss EIGHT
Setting: America, Manhattan, Chen Enterprise, Edison’s Office
‘I should teach this boss of yours a lesson.’ Edison stood up and took her hand in his. He twirled her around. Then he pulled her towards his body and held her close.
‘Yeah you should,’ she whispered.
Edison couldn’t hold the urge any longer. He crushed his lips against hers. Charlene opened her mouth surprised by his sudden movement. He took the advantage and thrust his tongue in her mouth entwining with hers.

A small smile spread on Charlene’s face. It stayed on for only awhile. When Edison looked down on her it had disappeared.
‘If you like me then you’d fight this and tell me right now,’ he ordered. He watched her. He waited. He got nothing. Not even a movement. He sighed and shook his head. ‘What did you expect?’ he scolded himself for building up hopes. ‘She hasn’t even told you she loves you, you big doofus!’
He looked away as tears fell. It fell on his hand. It also fell on Charlene’s. It made her grip his hand. He let go of her hand and got to his feet. He still didn’t notice her signs! Or was it his head that doesn’t want to believe it? Edison turned on his heels and slowly walked towards the door.
‘You big doofus!’ a small cry that came barely as a whisper was heard. And it came from behind him.
