Chapter 39

~Happy Ending~

Chapter Thirty-Seven ‘Happy Ending’

Edison looked at Nicholas in horror. Nicholas too was scared. ‘Oh Shit,’ was all they could say in unison. Nicholas rushed to Charlene’s other side and both looked at her not knowing what to do.

‘Why didn’t you tell me she has asthma?’ Nicholas demanded.

‘If I knew do you think I would have pulled a prank like that on her?’ Edison remarked.

‘It’s your entire fault!’ Edison was quick to blame his friend.

‘My fault?’ Nicholas spat. ‘I didn’t want to do it!’

‘You could have stopped me if you didn’t want to do it!’ Edison came back with.

Charlene’s heaving went louder a notch catching the twos attention as it was going to go on with the bickering. She flapped her hands in front of her face trying to gasp for air. Their panic returned. Edison combed his hair with his fingers thinking in frustration. Nicholas just stared down at Charlene lost of words.

‘Where is her inhaler?’ Edison quickly yelled. He ran frantically around the room looking for her bag.

‘I’m so sorry,’ Nicholas said quietly to Charlene. Guilt was all over his face. It was like he was just about to cry when Charlene winked at him. What? He thought. Did she just wink? He felt the blood come back up to his face. Charlene was okay. He was going to tell Edison. Charlene put her index finger on her lips and widened her eyes. ‘Why am I in the middle of this?’ he mumbled to himself.

‘What was that?’ Edison yelled.

‘Nothing,’ Nicholas quickly said. ‘Did you find it, stupid?’

‘Shut up!’ Edison barked. He came back to Charlene’s side empty handed. ‘Can’t find the damn thing,’ he said. ‘What are we suppose to do?’

‘Mouth to mouth,’ Nicholas quickly offered. Edison looked at Nicholas as if he spoke French. He didn’t see Charlene glare at Nicholas. Nicholas nodded. ‘I would do it myself but I think since she’s your woman you should do the honours.’

Edison first thought against it but this was for Charlene. Plus he wouldn’t mind stealing a kiss from her. Edison bent down slowly. He knew how to do CPR. He pushed Charlene gently down so she was lying on the bed. He ignored Nicholas who excused himself saying he’ll go get the doctor. Edison titled Charlene’s head up and held his hand on her forehead in case her head falls back. He pinched her nose and leaned forward. He then began the mouth to mouth recitation.

Charlene wanted to smack Nicholas. How could he tell that to Edison? She wanted to smack both of them. She was dying here trying to breath and the two idiots couldn’t even shout for a doctor? What if it was for real? She sure would have been dead by now. They were in a hospital for crying out loud! They could shout to scare all the living out of her when it came to that, she thought smugly. Well, it’s the other way round now! She accomplished her goal with Nicholas. But she let him off quickly. He was so sweet. Poor Nicholas being influenced by the bully Edison.

Charlene was finding it hard to control her laughter that was threatening to come out. Edison who was breathing in her mouth made her throat tickle. If he paid more attention he would have seen that she had stopped heaving the second Nicholas suggested CPR! After a while Charlene couldn’t take it no more. She began giggling hysterically.

Edison jumped back startled. ‘What?’

Charlene carried on giggling. She pointed at Edison trying to say something but she couldn’t talk while she was laughing.

‘You were faking it?’ Edison said. Charlene nodded. She had to hold her stomach as her stomach hurt from laughing too much. ‘You faked it?’ Edison raised his voice. Charlene’s laughter died.

‘You tried to scare the hell out of me,’ she pointed out. She sat up slowly and leaned back on the cushion.

‘That does not count,’ Edison shrugged it off. He glared at her. ‘What did I tell you about scaring me like that?’ He remembered back to their way to New Jersey for house hunting. She had joked that she was dying of boredom and he took it the wrong way. It scared him. He thought he was going to lose her.

‘If you remember, you also said that I could scare you any time,’ she frankly told him. She didn’t like the way he was looking at her. It scared her to see him angry. It was the second time now. And this time it wasn’t any different from the last time she scared him.

‘Why would I say that for?’ Edison retorted.

Charlene smiled. She pushed her weak body up. She stood in front of him. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him down. Their lips touched. At first the got no response from him. Then eventually he parted his lips and kissed her back. Their kiss went for a long time as both finally together.

Charlene pulled her lips away from his. ‘Do you remember now?’

‘Nope.’ Edison shook his head. ‘Let’s try again.’ He kissed her again before she could protest. She let Edison kiss her even though she knew that he knew that he remembered.

‘I missed you,’ she pulled back and told him. She held onto him realising how weak her body went but she ignored it. She looked into Edison’s eyes. ‘I wanted to tell you before but everything happened so fast.’

‘I missed you too,’ Edison smiled at her. He gave her one last kiss picking her up and settling her down back on the bed. ‘You my girl weigh like a feather!’ he exclaimed. ‘What will people say? I don’t like to feed my girl because I think she’s going fat?’

Charlene giggled. ‘I think its going to be more like, ‘I don’t like to feed my girl because I don’t like sharing’,’ she came back with. She laughed at her own joke.

Edison narrowed his eyes. ‘You do know that isn’t funny,’ he told her.

She smacked his hand since it was the closest. ‘I am so funny,’ she praised herself.

‘If you say so,’ he smirked.

Charlene glared at him then changed her expression to a sweet smile. ‘Come here I want to kiss you again,’ she poke softly. Edison was happy to oblige. He bent down to kiss her only to his surprise she grabbed his cheeks and pinched it. ‘Am I not funny?’ she asked him sweetly. She batted her eyes. Edison could do nothing but nod his head. ‘Good boy,’ she congratulated him. Edison pouted. Oblivious to him it made him look cute. Charlene laughed and gave him a kiss. ‘I love you.’

‘A guy can get used to your kisses,’ he said dreamily. ‘I think I’m in heaven.’

Charlene giggled. ‘Sweet talker.’

Edison sat on the side of Charlene’s bed. He looked adoringly down at her. ‘I’m just so relieved that you’re okay.’

Charlene smiled. Her smiled turned into a pout when for the first time she acknowledged the plain and white room. ‘No one bought me any flowers or gifts!’ she whined. ‘And you call yourself my boyfriend!’ she spat in disgust. She gave him a mock evil glare.

Poor Edison took it the wrong way. To Charlene’s unexpected surprise he jumped to his feet and ran out the room. ‘Wait!’ she called out but it was too late he had already disappeared out the door.

Charlene collected herself. ‘Dumb Edison!’ she muttered. In a way she found it sweet that Edison found every little thing she says serious and takes it to the heart. He would always make her number one in his eyes and heart. ‘Now he left me all alone!’

‘Didn’t anyone ever tell you, it’s not good to talk to yourself?’ Charlene looked up to find Gillian leaning on the door frame. She was quick to notice the guilt on her face. Of course she was more observant than Edison, Charlene thought smugly. ‘Can I come in?’

A bright smile came upon Charlene’s face. She nodded eagerly and patted the space where Edison had been sitting previously.

‘First I would like to apologise,’ Gillian said as soon as she seated her bottom down on the bed. ‘Char, I’m sorry I’ve been a bad friend.’

Charlene shook her head as yet again tears surfaced from behind her big round eyes. ‘No you were right the other day. I was the bad friend. I should have told you about me and Edison long ago.’

‘I should have realised that what I felt for Edison wasn’t real,’ Gillian said with teary eyes.

‘I’m sorry,’ they both said in unison. They burst into giggles of them hugged each other. Their giggles turned into sobs.

Gillian pulled back arm length. ‘Friends?’ Gillian said in between her sobs.

Charlene nodded. She held her right hand out and showed her pinkie finger. ‘Forever!’

Gillian’s entwined her pinkie finger with Charlene’s. ‘Friends forever!’

They both hugged one last time before straightening themselves out. They talked for awhile, mainly about Edison. Gillian told Charlene how Edison was like when she left. Gillian truly felt happiness seeing the two in love. She wished Charlene all the best as she had met the right guy. She wanted the same for her and Nicholas.

As if in queue Nicholas came in. he apologized about earlier. Gillian was confused at he could possibly apologize for. Nicholas was a true gentleman. He was caring and sensitive. Perfect for her. Charlene and Nicholas explained what happened before. She couldn’t help but laugh.

‘Edison sure can be stupid around you,’ Gillian said.

‘Hey,’ Edison exclaimed hearing the comment. ‘I take offence!’

‘Stop interrupting,’ Gillian scolded him. ‘You didn’t let me finish. I was going to say was that he may be stupid but his sweet and loving guy.’

Edison grinned. Nicholas groaned. ‘Don’t you know, you don’t give good compliments about another guy in front of your boyfriend,’ Nicholas mumbled. Edison heard and burst out laughing. He earned a jab on the stomach by Nicholas. All three started teasing each other.

Charlene stared at Edison. Edison was laughing while he told Gillian some of Nicholas’s embarrassing past. This is the guy she had waited for. It was just like fairytale. She found her Prince Charming. He rescued her from her “prison”. He helped her all the way. And they fell in love at first sight. Well, she knew she had definitely fallen for him the second she laid her eyes on him. This was her happiness. She found out what the meaning of life was. Her life was Edison. She smiled at him.

She moved her gaze to Nicholas. He had jumped on Edison trying to cover his mouth to stop him from telling Gillian every detail of his embarrassing moments. She may have known him for a short while but it was enough to know his character. He was such a gentleman. She felt a positive feeling towards him. If she had one wish she would wish she had a brother like Nicholas.

Charlene looked at Gillian. She was laughing at the two and trying to hear more by pushing Nicholas away from Edison but failing since she had a petite figure. Gillian was the second girl that wanted to be Charlene’s friend. Charlene thought for a second that they might be sisters. They do look a little alike. She shook her head. That’s only her silly head thinking that. She wouldn’t mind having a sister like Gillian. She may be sometimes self-centred and vain but she was a great friend.

Vicky burst through the door with Patrick and Daphne by her side. Vicky quickly went to help save Edison, plus she wanted to join in the fun. Charlene could never thank Vicky enough for introducing Edison to her. She was her very best friend who stuck by her side from day one. Well, maybe not day one since they didn’t start off good.

Patrick stood their frowning at the four fooling around. Charlene loved her father. He may have been a bit protective of her – okay very overprotective – but he was always there for her. He raised her very well. He loved her and he all his intentions were for the best of her even though it was a bit extreme.

Daphne shook her head at them as if she was disappointed but she had a grin on her face. It was just like Edison’s. Charlene thought that he had his mother’s features. Daphne may have come in between unaware that it might ruin their relationship which it nearly did. It only made hers and Edison’s love grow stronger. And that is one thing she would thank Daphne a million time.

Alec came in. He told them off but eventually gave up seeing Vicky laughing. She went up to him and hugged him. He was a great doctor and he was very much in love with Vicky. Charlene knew that Vicky had made a great choice to fall in love with him. She gave them her blessing.

Charlene sighed. This is life! Her life! And she had people around her who loved her and she loved them. Edison moved himself away from them all and walked over to Charlene’s side with a lazy smile. He had caught Charlene observing everyone and knew she was happy. He sat next to her. He put his arm around her and watched with her. She rested her body on him.

‘I love you,’ he whispered in her ear.

It tingled. She smiled genuinely. ‘I love you too.’
