Chapter 1

A Better Place

As she sat there, starring at him lying there, on the stiff, cold mattress of the hospital bed. Seeing him in this condition caused her heart to ache. The fact that he was in this helpless stage was all because of her, caused her heart to break into a million pieces. Why did she have to turn him away. Why did she reject his love? Her guilty concience was reaching its peek.
He was always there for her when she needed him most, even when she didn't need him, he was there. His smile always assured her that everything will turn out alright in the end. In his mind she was what's most important. Why didn't she see this before? She sat there, thinking about how she was a burden to everyone around her, everyone she'd ever cared about. Memories of the past ran through her mind.

~FLASHBACK~

"I'm sorry, there was nothing we could do." announced the doctor in a sad tone.
"That can't be true, my son and daughter-in-law cannot die." said an elderly woman with tears in her eyes. "What about Ruby? What happened to my grandaughter?" exclaimed Mrs. Lin.
"Auntie, please claim down, this isn't good for your health," replied Dr. Andy Zhao. "Ruby's fine. She's still in shock though. We'll have to keep her for the night to run a few more tests, you should go home and rest."
"No I want to stay with her, she's all that I have left! Please Andy!" begged the elderly woman.
The doctor reluctantly agreed. Andy Zhao, was a close friend to the family. He's known Mrs. Lin son, Robert Lin, since childhood. The rattling news of his best friend's accident, caused him great pain. Andy knew Mrs. Lin had a weak heart, and couldn't hold out any longer.
The next day, Ruby, a cute three year old girl, with the most adorable dimples, greeted Mrs. Lin, who was sleeping soundly in the chair, beside the bed, with a big smile. "Grandma! Grandma, what are you doing here? Where's mommy and daddy?" Ruby asked innocently, but Mrs. Lin didn't answer. Ruby shook her to wake her, but nothing happened. Her grandma didn't move. Ruby kept on trying to wake her grandma, but she wouldn't wake. The toddler began crying.
Dr. Zhao soon entered the room. He noticed Mrs. Lin laying motionlessly on the chair, he quickly checked her pulse, there was nothing, no pulse. He knew instantly her time has come. He looked down at little Ruby crying. "Don't cry Ruby, your grandma has gone to a better place. She's going to be very happy there," replied the doctor in a comforting tone.
"Where's my mommy and daddy?" she asked again.
"They went there too," replied the doctor trying to keep a straight voice. "Don't you worry, little one, I'll take good care of you."
"But I wanna see my mommy and daddy! I wanna go with them!" exclaimed Ruby.
The doctor replied, "You can't! Where they went, no one can follow. But I can promise you this, there will be a day when you will meet them again."
Ruby still crying, believed this nice man. She knew he wouldn't hurt her.
"Ruby, I'm going to take good care of you and make you a part of my family. I'm going to be your new daddy and I'll introduce you to your new mommy and sister," replied Andy.
"Yay a new friiend! What is my sister's name?" Ruby asked with a bright smile.
"Vicki!" replied the doctor.
When the two arrived at the Zhao resisdents, Ruby and Andy were greeted by Andy's wife Idy and their daughter Vicki. Vicki was also three years old, she was also very cute. Her most appealing aspects were her large eyes, which caused everyone to love her.
The moment the two set eyes on Ruby they loved her. Ruby also liked these people a lot. She and Vicki just clicked. They loved playing together. They soon became inseperateable. Ruby had adjusted fine to her new found family.
As she got older she had completely forgotten about these two parents of hers, weren't her real parents. Ruby and Vicki both grew up in a loving environment, went to school, got good grades, was very social, everyone loved the two girls. Besides having an adoring family, they got along quite well with the boy next door, Jimmy Cheung.
